“Our Son”- will you watch the new gay indie?

I think it looks great!!!

by Anonymousreply 105December 31, 2023 12:12 PM

Wow, I haven't been this excited since "Bros"!

by Anonymousreply 1November 24, 2023 9:35 PM

Lost me at Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 2November 24, 2023 9:38 PM

You can hear the pitch on this “gay interracial Kramer vs Kramer”.

It wouldn’t be a horrible idea, if only they’d cast some good actors.

by Anonymousreply 3November 24, 2023 9:38 PM

No way in hell would they be a couple in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 4November 24, 2023 9:42 PM

Oh, is this POS finally getting dumped after bombing at the Tribeca Film Festival? I see Vertical is putting it out which means no theatrical release. Probably will get thrown out on Prime and the two free library streamers.

by Anonymousreply 5November 24, 2023 9:44 PM

What are the free library streamers

by Anonymousreply 6November 24, 2023 9:47 PM

[quote]What are the free library streamers

Kanopy and Hoopla.

The first is a sort of Criterion Collection, the second a ragbag like Amazon Prime.

by Anonymousreply 7November 24, 2023 10:09 PM

Seriously, who the fuck is this Billy Porter?

by Anonymousreply 8November 24, 2023 10:15 PM

Billy Porter is so exhausting! 'Its all about me me me" No thanks. The Welsh baked boy is no better mind you.

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2023 10:20 PM

Those floor-length dreadlocks do him no favors.

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2023 10:22 PM

I mean Billy is getting divorced in real life too. Nobody could possibly love Billy more than he loves himself.

by Anonymousreply 11November 25, 2023 12:32 AM

NYT: simple yet engaging.

by Anonymousreply 12December 8, 2023 6:12 AM

I actually thought that trailer was great.

I grew up with two moms. When they broke up, it was challenging on its own. But it was also hard because it was so rare. No blueprint. No support. So the premise hits close to home for me, even all these years later.

)I just wish it was anyone other than Billy Porter. Any working actor alive would be a better choice. I just can't stand him.)

by Anonymousreply 13December 8, 2023 6:49 AM

I see Billy Porter butched it up for the role.

by Anonymousreply 14December 8, 2023 7:29 AM

Billy Porter pretending to be Meryl Streep in the gay version of Kramer vs. Kramer.

Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 15December 8, 2023 4:43 PM

It hasn't been trashed in reviews, has it?

by Anonymousreply 16December 8, 2023 4:52 PM

It hasn't. I've heard it described as being decent for what it is. And what it is, is a smaller movie treading familiar ground, but obviously with a new gay twist.

by Anonymousreply 17December 8, 2023 5:15 PM

I find him to be quite tedious.

by Anonymousreply 18December 8, 2023 5:16 PM

Because it's so believable that Luke Evans would look at Billy Porter and say, "Oh, yeah, he's hot. I wanna marry him."

by Anonymousreply 19December 8, 2023 5:45 PM

R19 many people don’t get married because the person is “hot”. How old are you?

by Anonymousreply 20December 8, 2023 5:52 PM

R20 The movie's about gay men.

How stupid are you?

by Anonymousreply 21December 8, 2023 5:57 PM

r20 nobody who looked like Luke Evans would go anywhere near Billy Porter IRL.

by Anonymousreply 22December 8, 2023 5:58 PM

R22 I see mismatched couples all the time. Even gay couples.

by Anonymousreply 23December 8, 2023 6:03 PM

R23 Mismatched is one thing.

A hot piece of ass going after a smelly troll is something else altogether.

by Anonymousreply 24December 8, 2023 6:06 PM

Believe it or not, sometimes you get to know someone and grow attracted to them r24. Not everything is physical. Youre clearly not a mature person.

by Anonymousreply 25December 8, 2023 6:09 PM

Yes, but if one got to know Billy Porter, they'd realize the inside is even uglier than the outside. And the outside is pretty ugly.

by Anonymousreply 26December 8, 2023 6:11 PM

She'll be shaking her weave in fury, tryna get that Oscar!

by Anonymousreply 27December 8, 2023 6:13 PM

R25 Ah, but no one wants to get to know Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 28December 8, 2023 6:20 PM

Trailer looked pretty good. A gay Kramer v Kramer could be interesting.

I'll watch it if its free on some streaming service. Don't think I'd pay any money to watch it on demand.

by Anonymousreply 29December 8, 2023 6:28 PM

People keep saying Kramer vs Kramer when this is a gay version of Marriage Story. Meryl abandoned her family in KvK then comes back toward the end. Marriage Story is about a divorce.

by Anonymousreply 30December 8, 2023 6:30 PM

It's the gay version of a homeless person squatting to take a shit on the sidewalk.

Billy Porter is playing the shit.

by Anonymousreply 31December 8, 2023 6:32 PM

Gosh. Friends, or sort of frenemies just divorced after ten years of marriage. No kid, but it looks similar

by Anonymousreply 32December 8, 2023 6:57 PM

It's great; I saw it at Tribeca. No histrionics; just a low-key, well-rounded family/divorce story that turns into a genuinely moving personal change for the Luke Evans character. Semi-happy ending, if you like that kind of thing.

by Anonymousreply 33December 8, 2023 7:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 35December 8, 2023 8:02 PM

It’s a very limited release. It comes out on VOD next week.

by Anonymousreply 36December 8, 2023 8:03 PM

R25 is obviously very ugly

by Anonymousreply 37December 8, 2023 8:04 PM

Did Billy study acting with Oprah?

by Anonymousreply 38December 8, 2023 8:10 PM

R38 hater.

by Anonymousreply 39December 8, 2023 8:37 PM

I think it looks good. Sadly it isn’t playing anywhere near me. It’s a tiny film and limited release. It comes out on VOD next week

by Anonymousreply 40December 8, 2023 9:15 PM

Billy is a triple threat!

by Anonymousreply 41December 8, 2023 9:18 PM

I'm certain Billy had it in his contract that it had to have an awards qualifying release because he was sure he'd be nominated for every award. That's the only reason this tripe is in one theater this week.

by Anonymousreply 42December 8, 2023 9:24 PM

What was the budget on this? Did they use an iPhone 14 or the new 15?

by Anonymousreply 43December 8, 2023 9:25 PM

The two biggest costs were the industrial sun lamps for Luke Evans and a lackey to follow Porter around at all times telling him how fabulous he is.

by Anonymousreply 44December 8, 2023 9:28 PM

R42 that still makes it ineligible for Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 45December 8, 2023 9:31 PM

Billy is scheduled to receive the Marsha P. Johnson Participation Trophy at the Golden Globes.

by Anonymousreply 46December 8, 2023 9:32 PM

[quote] that still makes it ineligible for Oscars.

Wrong

by Anonymousreply 47December 8, 2023 9:41 PM

Idk. They updated their rules earlier this year but this is for Best Picture. Idk about acting.

It used to be that a film only had to be in theaters for one week in at least one city but now it’s different.

“ Films now will need to add an additional theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or nonconsecutive, in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets, no later than 45 days after the initial release in 2024.”

No more of that one theater in one city for 7 days and you’re eligible.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 48December 8, 2023 9:46 PM

R48, that doesn't begin until next year. It's for films released in 2024. So Our Son is still under the old rule of one week release in one qualifying city.

by Anonymousreply 49December 8, 2023 9:52 PM

I also think that requiring the film to play in 10 additional markets is a bit excessive. I think that will wind up ensuring that many performances will be ineligible. In the changing theatrical market, fewer indie films are being supported outside NY & LA, so why put more restrictions on them?

by Anonymousreply 50December 8, 2023 9:55 PM

[quote] Yes, but if one got to know Billy Porter, they'd realize the inside is even uglier than the outside. And the outside is pretty ugly.

Billy Porter is NOT ugly. He is just not some gay4pay-porn fever dream of what passes for hot among a majority of white and white-worshipping Dataloungers. I am beginning to understand that there is a prominent anti-Black tinge to the Billy Porter hate at this forum. This is the only thread on Datalounge where someone has suggested that Luke Evans' looks make him somehow unattainable.

by Anonymousreply 51December 8, 2023 9:57 PM

R50 that’s the whole point, to limit eligibility. With all these streamers, indie films, indie studios and big studio films coming out every year the Academy were getting an overwhelming amount of submissions now. This limits the eligibility which limits the submissions so now it’s easier to go through the films etc.

by Anonymousreply 52December 8, 2023 9:58 PM

No, Billy Porter is ugly. It's not racist to say someone is ugly.

by Anonymousreply 53December 8, 2023 9:59 PM

[quote] that’s the whole point, to limit eligibility. Yes, but I think there is a way to address that without penalizing films that don't have the budget to do an 11 city release. To begin with, stop this shit of putting them on VOD/streaming a week or two after the theatrical bow.

If they don't want to do that, then give some sort of compromise because booking a film in 10 more cities is extreme. I would say the Academy needs to solidify their list of qualifying cities, then say- play in 3-5 of these cities, stagger the release so it lengthens to film's theatrical window and make it feel like more of a real theatrical film.

Right now, the academy is saying a film has to play 10 more cities and needs to do so within 45 days of the initial 7 day release. That seems ridiculous to me.

by Anonymousreply 54December 8, 2023 10:06 PM

[quote]Billy Porter is NOT ugly.

He's quite unattractive.

[quote]I am beginning to understand that there is a prominent anti-Black tinge to the Billy Porter hate at this forum.

Oh please.

by Anonymousreply 55December 8, 2023 10:13 PM

Isaac Cole Powell has a role as a ridiculous club kid type with a hot ass. I'd been wondering WHET him.

by Anonymousreply 56December 8, 2023 10:16 PM

In this version, they're fighting over custody of the poolboy.

by Anonymousreply 57December 8, 2023 10:17 PM

The director's previous film had DL fave Patricia Clarkson as well as DL laughingstocks Anson Elgort and Matt Bomer.

by Anonymousreply 62December 10, 2023 6:40 PM

I may watch it on demand

by Anonymousreply 63December 10, 2023 11:05 PM

R4 Really? You do see it in LA. Though in most cities a hot masc guy like Luke is always partnered with someone who looks like his twin lol.

by Anonymousreply 64December 10, 2023 11:13 PM

R26 😂 You are such a cunt but that was a great retort.

by Anonymousreply 65December 10, 2023 11:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 66December 11, 2023 12:29 AM

Billy Porter is so good in this movie!

by Anonymousreply 67December 15, 2023 8:05 PM

OMG he's HORRIBLE!

by Anonymousreply 68December 15, 2023 8:16 PM

Hated it!

by Anonymousreply 69December 15, 2023 8:52 PM

I just watched it on Prime and was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. But…..they are absolutely unbelievable as a couple. Luke has never really appealed to me before but he was very sexy in this movie - something is really haggard about his face though, he needs to get that fixed. The story itself was perfectly played and very realistic, for a gay movie it didn’t go overboard with the stereotypes, just accurate portrayals.

by Anonymousreply 70December 16, 2023 5:59 PM

R67 OMG the acting...I might as well be watching the Young and the Restless

by Anonymousreply 71December 16, 2023 10:16 PM

I so wanted Billy to get punched in that scene at R67.

by Anonymousreply 72December 16, 2023 11:44 PM

R70, you actually paid money to watch it?

by Anonymousreply 73December 17, 2023 12:36 AM

R67 Oh, God. Billy's acting is High School Play 101.

Start quietly, shout suddenly, walk to your mark, turn, face the audience, say the gasp-inducing line, wait for reaction.

by Anonymousreply 74December 17, 2023 1:09 PM

R74 no.

by Anonymousreply 75December 17, 2023 2:11 PM

If this is anything to go by then Billy as James Baldwin is going to be fucking awful.

by Anonymousreply 76December 17, 2023 3:14 PM

I can't watch La Porter chew the scenery.

by Anonymousreply 77December 17, 2023 3:15 PM

R76 Is that movie even happening now?

He was crowing about it on every talk show appearance for months, then the SAG and writers strikes happened, and now he's silent about it. It's not even listed on his IMDB page as something in production.

I think that project is dead, thank God.

by Anonymousreply 78December 17, 2023 3:20 PM

I’m sorry but Billy is miscast. He just is. It almost makes like a black comedy and it’s not supposed to be.

by Anonymousreply 79December 17, 2023 5:39 PM

Billy is miscast in anything where he's required to play a human being.

by Anonymousreply 80December 17, 2023 6:09 PM

R79 a black comedy? Really?

by Anonymousreply 81December 17, 2023 6:12 PM

He meant to say an African-American comedy

by Anonymousreply 82December 17, 2023 6:28 PM

Only it’s ridiculous to label something as black or African American because a black person is in it. How ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 83December 17, 2023 6:57 PM

Dumb fuck, do you not know what a black comedy is?

by Anonymousreply 84December 17, 2023 7:00 PM

Until they release a version without Billy Porter? No.

by Anonymousreply 85December 17, 2023 7:13 PM

R82 Don’t tell me what the fuck I meant I to say. I’m not talking about a comedy with African-Americans or black people. I’m talking about a black comedy. I was waiting for this to turn full SNL skit and have something outrageous like Billy is a wifebeater is something. Billy is a chew scenery type acting. It doesn’t work for a drama like this. And apologies r82 if you were being sarcastic.

by Anonymousreply 86December 17, 2023 7:25 PM

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I put the 🙄 on there because I was serious.

by Anonymousreply 87December 17, 2023 7:34 PM

R87 o. No I was talking about black comedy film genre. And I’m glad you responded peacefully. I apologize for my obnoxious tone previously.

by Anonymousreply 88December 17, 2023 9:01 PM

I just finished watching it and I liked it a lot! It was actually very good.

by Anonymousreply 89December 23, 2023 2:34 PM

R89 Thanks, Billy!

by Anonymousreply 90December 23, 2023 3:44 PM

R89 it was a good movie. It’s a shame Billy overacts numerous times in it.

by Anonymousreply 91December 23, 2023 4:37 PM

R91 How DARE you say I overacted! Who do you think you are, insulting a PROUD, GAY, man of color! Exit this forum immediately!

by Anonymousreply 92December 23, 2023 4:39 PM

This Billy Potter dude is quite good!

by Anonymousreply 93December 23, 2023 7:33 PM

I avoid projects with BP

by Anonymousreply 94December 23, 2023 7:43 PM

I won't go out of my way to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 95December 23, 2023 7:54 PM

What if it gets on your way, r95?

by Anonymousreply 96December 25, 2023 2:34 PM

If I wanted to experience the reality of a loud brash African-American drag queen of the lower class I would drive 5 mi to Baltimore City.

by Anonymousreply 97December 25, 2023 2:59 PM

I've never seen Billy Porter in anything else, but it cracks me up how a thread about a movie turns into a referendum on one of its lead actors, who apparently is a DL bête noire.

by Anonymousreply 98December 25, 2023 7:07 PM

The movie is actually good.

by Anonymousreply 99December 25, 2023 7:11 PM

R89 has horrendous taste

by Anonymousreply 100December 25, 2023 7:13 PM

My goodness! Is this both a colored AND a homosexual movie????

by Anonymousreply 101December 27, 2023 12:34 AM

To R4, You already said what I was going to say about this film!! Thank You.

by Anonymousreply 102December 27, 2023 1:14 AM

R97? You gave me the best laugh I'll have all day!

by Anonymousreply 103December 27, 2023 5:21 PM

He and Luke look so mismatched onscreen. I wish they could have cast Darryl Stephens in Billy’s role.

by Anonymousreply 104December 31, 2023 11:26 AM

R104 They could've cast Darren Stevens and it wouldn't have helped.
