An all-star cast in a flawed but fairly faithful version of Ernest Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises," from 1957. Tyrone Power is empathetic as Jake Barnes, Ava Gardner & Errol Flynn display a bit of the spirit of the "lost generation," with miscast Eddie Albert & Mel Ferrer. Aside from the lukewarm adaptation this famed story gets, several of the cast are definitely from the wrong generation. My look at "The Sun Also Rises" here:
"The Sun Also Rises" from 1957 is an all-star downer

Here's an excellent, free copy of "The Sun Also Rises" from YouTube.

I think it’s Hemingway’s best novel—everything after paled (other than the short stories), so the mediocrity of the film is that much more disappointing. The Elevator Repair Service theatre company did an excellent adaptation several years ago that retained much of Hemingway’s narration. It was not “completist,” like their “Gatz,” but it was a very good reproduction of the novel.

I loved the novel from my college days...

Power died in 1958 and Flynn in 1959.

I love Ava Gardner but she made only like three decent movies in her whole career. She got cast in one dull overblown project after another. Seeing her name in the opening credits is usually a sign that a film's gonna suck big time.

The Killers, The Hucksters, Mogambo, Showboat, On the Beach, The Night of the Iguana, and Seven Days in May are worth watching. Ava had other hits, too...
