I have a 14-1/2 year old cat having eye surgery tomorrow to correct entropion

The hospital is asking if I want CPR and other heroic steps taken if she crashes.

I don’t know.

by Anonymousreply 37November 17, 2023 2:12 PM

Do anything you can to keep her with you so long as she will have a good quality of life . Hoping everything goes well for you both X

by Anonymousreply 1November 15, 2023 5:30 PM

Is it a rescue cat?

by Anonymousreply 2November 15, 2023 5:31 PM

Of course she is a rescue cat.

I’ve read that feline CPR administered in a hospital is only effective 15% of the time. (5% outside of hospital.)

The hospital will charge at least $1,000 extra and the odds are heavily that she won’t survive, so perhaps it would be better to let her go peacefully?

by Anonymousreply 3November 15, 2023 5:36 PM

I'm going to say yes, but it pisses me off that they treat this as a profit opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 4November 15, 2023 5:47 PM

Ugh what an awful decision. My cat lived to 22 so your kitty is still a youngster IMO. Hopefully you have a lot more time together.

by Anonymousreply 5November 15, 2023 5:48 PM

if you can't easily afford it, no, don't do it. Your kitty has had a wonderful and beloved life, heroic measures that will break your bank and are unlikely to work are unnecessary.

by Anonymousreply 6November 15, 2023 5:59 PM

Thinking good thoughts for both you and your cat, OP… whatever the level we get to before condoling you.

I second the opinion to keep your baby’s quality of life in mind, especially when it comes to the stats on CPR’s effectiveness.

I remember taking my boy into the Animal Hospital towards the end of his life, where they wanted to perform some extraordinary tests and measures. He gave me a look that said he just wanted to go home, so that’s where we went. At 18 years together I enjoyed saying he was my longest relationship with a male of ANY species for quite some time, it drove my husband nuts for a bit. Lol

by Anonymousreply 7November 15, 2023 6:00 PM

I hate to say this (and my kitty is around the same age) but I would let her go. Even if they revive her successfully other problems may develop and it would be cruel to put her through that. Sending good thoughts to both of you.....

I hate the vet office , they’re vile. They play on your emotions and attempt to make you feel like the worst person on earth if you can’t afford whatever outrageous cost they want you to pay. And they’re always judgmental.

by Anonymousreply 9November 15, 2023 6:06 PM

It seems to me the vet industry decided somewhere along the line that they’d prefer to take fewer patients and make more money off them. I’ve been shocked how expensive taking care of my cat has been. Well over $10,000 in four years. There’s a TV series about a Vet in Colorado that takes the opposite approach—high volume/low cost. People come to them from all over the country and they often charge like 10% of what other vets ask. I wish I was closer to Denver.

by Anonymousreply 11November 15, 2023 7:11 PM

I've read that many, if not most, vet practices are now owned by venture capitalists. Ergo, $5000 operations instead of letting kitty go.

by Anonymousreply 12November 15, 2023 7:19 PM

Our dog just had to be hospitalized for three days, with various urgent vet appointments before and after.

We probably spent $8-9k on it.

But he’s going to be ok.

Americans keeping pets alive for their own enjoyment.

by Anonymousreply 14November 15, 2023 7:32 PM

Don't prolong your cat's suffering just to protect your heart.

by Anonymousreply 15November 15, 2023 7:33 PM

Well, the pets wouldn't exist at all if not for our enjoyment of them.

by Anonymousreply 16November 15, 2023 7:34 PM

I'd sign whatever but also say if you kill my cat I will close your practice down.

by Anonymousreply 17November 15, 2023 7:34 PM

I'm going to tell the surgeon not to revive her if they can't do the surgery. I don't want her living in discomfort.

by Anonymousreply 18November 15, 2023 7:35 PM

OP, so sorry to hear about your suffering on whether to let your baby go. Put yourself in kitty's shoes and the answer is probably let her go. We never think of these tramatic ending when we adopt a pet, but nature marches on. You have my utmost sympathy, i lost my baby last dec and it took 7 months before i could recue another.

by Anonymousreply 19November 15, 2023 7:40 PM

At that age she'll probably lose a great deal of memory after the anesthesia. Be prepared for it to get to know you all over again.

by Anonymousreply 20November 15, 2023 7:59 PM

I guess I'll be introduced to her as the asshole making her wear the cone of shame for two weeks.

by Anonymousreply 21November 15, 2023 8:03 PM

I wouldn’t. She’s very old, if it’s time it’s time. I’ve given up heroic measures to keep my pets alive. It’s never worked and vets of course want that money to keep coming.

by Anonymousreply 22November 15, 2023 9:04 PM

Some good news. It’s not entropion after all. But her lashes are growing into her eyes. They will use liquid nitrogen to kill the hair follicles. No surgery and no cone of shame.

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2023 12:46 PM

Don't put yourself in a situation such as this again – – stop owning pets!

by Anonymousreply 24November 16, 2023 12:56 PM

But she’s so sweet.

by Anonymousreply 25November 16, 2023 2:19 PM

OPee, I am happy to hear the good news, hug your kitty tight :)

by Anonymousreply 26November 16, 2023 2:39 PM

Ask if you can be present for the surgery, then if the cat does need CPR you can perform it yourself.

by Anonymousreply 27November 16, 2023 3:20 PM

^^^LOL

by Anonymousreply 28November 16, 2023 8:02 PM

I have a friend who also does TNR but after the surgery she brings them to her vet to get their teeth cleaned and sorted out. I joke that the cats are teamsters. She wanted to retire last year but she can't afford to.

by Anonymousreply 29November 16, 2023 8:17 PM

If she is otherwise healthy then probably yes, if you have to money for it. You need to realize that even in a best case scenario, she probably doesn't have more than 3 years to live.

by Anonymousreply 30November 16, 2023 8:35 PM

Yay! That's great news, R23 OP! I am happy for you.

I am so looking forward to wishing your kitty a Happy Birthday on his Sweet 16th, and will be expecting an invitation to the 21st birthday party.🥳

by Anonymousreply 31November 16, 2023 8:44 PM

🎵 "everybody dance, y'all!"

What's your name, OP's cat? Four lives down, five to go!😻

by Anonymousreply 32November 16, 2023 9:40 PM

She’s fine She sends her regards.

by Anonymousreply 33November 16, 2023 9:42 PM

^^^her Sweet 16th

Pronouns! I tell ya!😻

by Anonymousreply 34November 16, 2023 9:43 PM

When my then 14-year old Shih-tzu went in to have her teeth cleaned, she crashed under anesthesia and they had to pull her out of it. My vet sounded pretty shook up when he called to tell me about it and said she could never go under anesthesia again.

She lived another three and a half years after that with no issues. We managed her dental health with quarterly antibiotics to keep any dental infection/pain at bay. I am grateful they saved her. I agree with the other poster, however, that it is a shame they are capitalizing on this.

by Anonymousreply 35November 16, 2023 9:54 PM

Right OP, post pic of kitty please

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2023 11:17 AM
