Fayetteville, Arkansas

Anybody lived it been here? A friend of mine is relocating here and the cost of living is making it seem quite attractive to me. Where I live now is just becoming overly expensive so .kind of looking around to relocate me and my cats. Would love to hear any experience or insights about it.

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2023 3:43 AM

I wouldn't move anywhere where Sarah Huckabee Sanders is Governor.

by Anonymousreply 1November 14, 2023 7:36 PM

As long as you aren’t looking for a social network, the internet, Amazon, etc mean you have a reasonable life in many small, isolated cities provided they are low crime. However, good luck travelling easily anywhere, especially by plane

by Anonymousreply 2November 14, 2023 7:43 PM

Eureka Springs is gay friendly and would make a nice day trip from there.

by Anonymousreply 3November 14, 2023 7:53 PM

Fayetteville is not a backwater despite Sasquatch Sanders. NW Arkansas is the home of Walmart, it is booming just nicely up there.

by Anonymousreply 4November 14, 2023 9:30 PM

The Arkansas is for the most part a hell hole, and a dangerous one at that.

by Anonymousreply 5November 14, 2023 9:36 PM

It’s close to Bentonville which is still smaller but is growing exponentially because it’s the corporate home of Walmart so it’s full of their top executives. And apparently has a bunch of cool new things to keep said executives not bored and discourage them from moving away.

by Anonymousreply 6November 14, 2023 9:46 PM

In Fayetteville all seems to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 7November 14, 2023 9:51 PM

R2 is an obvious idiot.

by Anonymousreply 8November 14, 2023 10:06 PM

R8. Such an intelligent and thoughtful post!

by Anonymousreply 9November 14, 2023 11:27 PM

[quote] kind of looking around to relocate me and my cats.

Don't take your cats to Arkansas. The hill folk will use them for target practice.

by Anonymousreply 10November 14, 2023 11:29 PM

[quote]Fayetteville is not a backwater

My sides.

To anyone who has ever lived in a major cosmopolitan city it is nothing but some backwater.

by Anonymousreply 11November 14, 2023 11:32 PM

When you consider the personalities, intellect, and level of sophistication of the people on this thread who don’t want to live there, it almost makes you want to go there immediately.

by Anonymousreply 12November 14, 2023 11:36 PM

In 2019, I took a road trip on my Harley from my place in FL to CA going west on I-40. My bike broke down outside of Little Rock. The tow truck came and took me and my bike to the Harley shop, and then he was kind enough to drop me at a hotel. But the closest one? Oh, no. It had to be a few miles away from the shop because "coloreds" stayed at the closer one, and there was nothing I could say to talk him out of it. And Little Rock is the capital and the biggest city in Arkansas.

Does that help any, OP?

Meth fentanyl poverty and roaming addicts looking for stuff to steal. On the other hand the Ozark's are beautiful and the area has some lovely rivers lakes and landscapes. Great barbecue is available from little homegrown operations. Way too many Americana food restaurants. The locals think it’s freakin Paris. The backroads are scenic but dusty. Hardwood forests and great horse husbandry culture and traditions. This area is crawling with conservatives and Christian Baptist witness etc.. This was a dry county until about 10 years ago. Church affiliation can be important to people in getting a pigeon hole on you. Cost of living is here is shockingly low for a Californian or New Yorker. I think the racism is overblown but I may be wrong.

by Anonymousreply 14November 15, 2023 12:05 AM

Can I find a good Christian woman?

by Anonymousreply 15November 15, 2023 12:13 AM

“ Meth fentanyl poverty and roaming addicts looking for stuff to steal.”

But enough about New York City ….

by Anonymousreply 16November 15, 2023 12:13 AM

It's a college town--places like that have "liberal" reps but often are very insular---town and gown and you won't be either.

by Anonymousreply 17November 15, 2023 12:17 AM

Arkansas and Missouri have their good areas. We need more Democrats to move to these states and vote.

by Anonymousreply 18November 15, 2023 12:18 AM

The flagship University of Arkansas is located in Fayetteville, and you get all the intelligence and culture there other places in Arkansas don't.

I have a very liberal fraternity brother who teaches there, and he loves the community and the environment. This from a guy from Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 19November 15, 2023 12:33 AM

I can’t imagine anybody of a liberal cast being comfortable in the south.

by Anonymousreply 20November 15, 2023 1:00 AM

We drove thru Fayetteville and it was actually very very pretty. Rolling hills and horse farms. i was very surprised by the natural beauty of the area.

by Anonymousreply 21November 15, 2023 1:06 AM

I'm very liberal and live in Baton Rouge, r20. My social circle is either also liberal or, if Republican, not batshit crazy. I visited a friend in Joplin, Missouri, and it was very gay friendly. We do live here.

by Anonymousreply 22November 15, 2023 1:21 AM

What is Hot Springs like?

by Anonymousreply 23November 15, 2023 1:42 AM

Trump won the county where Fayetteville is located. It's hardly a liberal outpost.

by Anonymousreply 24November 15, 2023 1:55 AM

Was it named after that tramp LuAnn Fayette?

by Anonymousreply 25November 15, 2023 2:13 AM

If you like to travel it's inconvenient and expensive traveling from these small regional airports. Always something to keep in mind if you are used to living near a major airport.

by Anonymousreply 26November 15, 2023 1:14 PM

I also think in terms of where you can go for a day trip or a long weekend. That part of the country doesn't have a lot unless you like Lake of the Ozarks or Kansas City. People here usually love college towns, but having lived in a few, they can be very insular, esp. if your neither a local nor part of academia and the academic world can be very unwelcoming depending on the institution and department.

by Anonymousreply 27November 15, 2023 2:38 PM

These two are from Bentonville, they are fundies and have multiple children, some black. Fundies always adopt black children.

[quote] This was a dry county until about 10 years ago.

WRONG. I went to grad school there at the U of A in the mid 90s, and Washington County was not dry. There were more restrictive liquor laws (can't sell from a liquor store on Sunday), but it wasn't dry. Some of the other counties in Arkansas were still dry at the time, though.

If I HAD to live in Arkansas, I would live in Fayetteville. It is a nice college town with a liberal vibe, yet like others have said there's a lot of fundie Xtian types all around. It's growth has exploded in the last 10 years or so and the services, roads, schools, etc. are slow to catch up. I was there a couple of years ago for work and the traffic was HORRENDOUS, especially when there was a Razorback game.

The Ozarks does have a lot of beauty and outdoor recreation (hiking trails, lakes, etc) and the Walton grandkids have been using their cash to build a lot of mountain biking and other bike trails. However, the state is going straight down the shitter politically by electing corrupt cow Sarah Hucklebees as governor. It was conservative back in the 90s but now its full on MAGA.

“On the Chronicles of Southern Flyoverstan, we take you to a booming metro full of new sights to see!” 📺

by Anonymousreply 30November 15, 2023 4:09 PM

R24. You really need to look at Fayetteville itself. Trump won the vast majority of the counties in the US.

by Anonymousreply 31November 15, 2023 10:32 PM

Hon, I have heard of blue dot in a red state but I will not be convinced of blue dot in a red county r31.

If the county itself voted for Trump, that tells you if you move to that area you are going to be surrounded by a lot of Trumpsters in your day to day life.

by Anonymousreply 32November 15, 2023 10:42 PM

I’d take El Camino over their “flagship” campus.

I was going to say what r19 brought up. If there is a university, you will find more intelligence and liberalism in the area and more events, cultural or otherwise. If you're a relatively sociable person, you'll meet like-minded people.

I lived in Bloomington, Indiana for five years in grad school. I imagine things are pretty similar to Fayetteville. The shocking amount of traffic on home game days was the absolute worst, and I say that as a native Californian with more than a passing familiarity with traffic.

Fun fact: the University of Arkansas sent a recruitment letter to our academic department (and all others in the same discipline across the country) to fill a faculty position. It was pinned up in the student lounge. All the usual boiler for requirements, etc. The letter closed with SOWEEE PIG!!! Not joking.

by Anonymousreply 34November 15, 2023 11:15 PM

R32 R32. I won’t do all your research for you, hon,(since you claim the idea that Fayetteville could be blue is too preposterous to be considered), but I very easily found Clinton won Fayetteville in 2016.

You might have considered the fact, hon, the Fayetteville’s population is 95,000, and the county’s population is 250,000. In the 2020 election, hon, Trump and Biden got 50 percent snd 47 percent respectively, and it is highly like the outlying areas of the county voted heavily for Trump in line with other rural areas. Therefore, hon, it is quite likely the democrats won Fayetteville by a substantial margin in 2020 as well.

by Anonymousreply 35November 16, 2023 1:22 AM

It ain't no Eureker Springs no how.

by Anonymousreply 36November 16, 2023 1:25 AM

Sure, dear. Now enjoying living in Fayetteville, surrounded by Trumtards and being governed by corrupt sow Sarah.

by Anonymousreply 37November 16, 2023 2:44 PM

A college town in the middle of nowhere doesn't sound inviting.

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2023 3:19 AM

R38 In DL world, it’s at least a likely oasis going from point A to point B.
