Why Is This 6-Year Old Doing Drag?

VICE travels to Nebraska to meet the 6-year-old boy behind Lulu LovelyTwirls, the world’s youngest drag queen, to understand how his parents, community, and politicians are reacting to his controversial passion for drag.

Too young.

I don't like child exploitation in any form, and I think this is exploitative.

Keep it at home, until he's at least in high school.

That said, his dad is hot!

by Anonymousreply 1November 13, 2023 6:23 AM

I'm only about 1/3 of the way through the video, but one of the questions that popped into my head was "how did he even come to know about drag?"

And then I saw that his parents took him to a Pride Parade. Which struck me as unusual.

Two straight parents taking their three kids to a Pride Parade.

I appreciate that they're so open-minded, but the kids seem too young to be at a Pride Parade, which is really an adult event.

But it really is fascinating how this little kid took to drag so quickly, and then went full force with it.
"Why Is This 6-Year Old Doing Drag?"

Because most kids LOVE playing dress up, OP

Some kids also love performing.

Some kids are also gay.

[bold]Drag Queening is merely a form of 'Clowning' which is an age old performance-art.[/bold]

How does this kid performing in dress-up harm anyone? How does his hobby impede anyone from going about their daily lives? Meanwhile people like you don't bat an eye at shit like this pic ↓↓↓ when [bold]guns kill more kids than any other cause in the U.S.[/bold]

But why don’t we see girls of any age dressing up as men. I’m not talking about trans or tomboys. I’m talking about as performance art. Because men can’t be made fun of. I’m sorry some of this is getting into… I’m not quite sure what the right word is. But it’s something eerie.

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2023 6:36 AM

Why not? I was putting on makeup and playing dress-up when I was his age as well, it was fun. I grew out of it and I'm more outdoorsy flannel shirt gay these days. People overreact to these things.

Also, for the hundredth times, these are not your kids. Have crotchfruit of your own and you'll be able to dictate to them whether they can do drag or not. Until then, stop with the pearl clutching and maybe get laid; thinking about other people's kiddies all day long isn't healthy.

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2023 6:40 AM
But why don’t we see girls of any age dressing up as men.

Gays are more theatrical, news at eleven. There's a reason (musical) theatre and just showbiz in general is bigger among the gays than it is among the lesbians.

You're seeing eeriness where there isn't any and projecting it onto literal kids having fun, maybe think about that for a minute.

by Anonymousreply 6November 13, 2023 6:43 AM

R6 I wasn’t thinking about this title brat nor his attention seeking parents. I’m merely reacting to a posting cause I can’t sleep so I’m on DL.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2023 6:44 AM
But why don’t we see girls of any age dressing up as men. I’m not talking about trans or tomboys. I’m talking about as performance art

Because in the adult world, drag is more prevalent.

It's there, and it's visible as entertainment for men who want to dress and perform as women.

However, here is no real "performance" outlet for women dressing as men. If anything, their expression may come through sports, or something like that. Soccer, football, volleyball, softball. THAT is the performance outlet for young girls who enjoy traditionally male activities.

For boys who enjoy traditionally female things, they have maybe always stuck to playing with dolls or whatever the case may be.

The only difference is that with drag becoming much more prevalent on television and online, young boys can see that and say "Hey, I want to do that!"

As for girls, they might just watch guys playing sports on television, and say "Hey, I want to do that!"

Again, the performance of their tendencies, simply comes through different means of expression.

It’s one thing to be 6 and play dress up at home, it’s another to work the gay, oops I mean… Queer bar for tips. Sorry but this is all part of the Trans agenda, which is literally recruiting little gays into a lifetime of surgeries and meds.
Sorry but this is all part of the Trans agenda, which is literally recruiting little gays...

Oh FFS, R10.

The "trans agenda?" Is that similar to the GAY AGENDA you and yours have been screeching about for decades?

You can't turn anyone trans just like you can't turn anyone gay.

Fuck off with your fear mongering and scapegoating. We all know people like you would LOVE it if gays were forced back into the closet and essentially 'wiped' from society. Trying to use trans people to get your foot in the door to fuck over the gay-rights we've achieved AIN'T GONNA WORK

Go tell your buddies how you lurk on gay websites 'merely' to bash trans people. Tell them how much you lurk and how much you look forward to lurking... then also tell them how much you jack off to trans porn.

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2023 6:59 AM

R14, and for that reason I do not see those parents letting the kid "grow out of it" like R5 did

by Anonymousreply 17November 13, 2023 6:59 AM

R5 Are gay men allowed to talk about domestic violence against women? Are people who don't have pets allowed to talk about animal welfare? What about people who don't have cancer, can they support cancer organizations?

Drag is not for children. The fact that such a sentence can now elicit controversy within "LGBTQ+" circles is deeply disturbing. We have been completely taken over by bitransqueers who have latched on to the rainbow in an attempt to make their heterosexuality spicier and more "rebellious".

by Anonymousreply 18November 13, 2023 6:59 AM
Sorry but this is all part of the Trans agenda, which is literally recruiting little gays into a lifetime of surgeries and meds

Some of you always tend to over generalize things, and don't try to put any critical thinking into your ridiculous comments.

That's the hallmark of a very lazy mind.

As with anything else, it should be looked at, on a case-by-case basis.

And I think in this particular case, his parents are just very open and accepting of the LGBT community.

As such, they noticed that their child seemed drawn to what could be characterized as LGBT interests.

Most of you complain about how DIFFICULT it was to not be accepted by parents, or family, or community.

Well here you have two parents who are very accepting of their child, but more importantly, very LOVING towards their child.

And yet you're still complaining.

Yes, he's young. And personally, I feel he's too young to be going out to these types of performances.

But how is this different from a stage mom pushing her kid into acting and all of those bad influences?

Or how is this different from a parent who pushes their kids into competitive sports at very young ages?

It's not different, except for the fact that they're not pushing him into it. This kid WANTS to do it. And I admire them for their unconditional support.

Again, I am personally against young kids being pushed into adult activities as children.

But this is their kid, and it's their decision on how to raise him.

(PS, if you listen to what the mom says, she asks him "are you a boy or a girl?" and he says BOY. End of story. And then he also plays sports with the other boys. For all we know, he could lose interest in drag by the time he's a teenager, and start dating girls and playing football. But at least his parents are letting it be HIS choice, and not what society says he should be. So cut it out with the grooming bullshit)

by Anonymousreply 19November 13, 2023 6:59 AM

Women dress in DRAG every day.

They worked and fought so now society doesn't bat an eye when women generally dress like men in their daily lives.

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2023 7:12 AM
But why don’t we see girls of any age dressing up as men.

Ah. I’ve been to more boring dance recitals than anyone should ever have to attend because both of my nieces took dancing lessons from about 4 years old until they aged out of the program they went to at about 17.

Both of them have dressed as men more than once at dance recitals. And there were a few (much fewer) boys that took classes with them and sometimes my nieces still wanted to play the male parts and they did. It’s not really that uncommon. Especially if the only boy currently at the dance school is 6, some girls are playing all the male parts in the Nutcracker every year. Nobody “groomed” them to do that.

They’ve both graduated high school and they go to all the drag tours with the RPDR queens that come to town. And then they decided they wanted to be drag queens themselves. They wanted to be (as far as I know) the first female drag queens in our city and wondered if they’d be made fun of. But they were old enough to get it. They know exactly what drag is vs. something like a female illusionist. Then wanted people to think they were men dressed up as over the top caricatures of women. They can do splits and death drops and they knew they’d have to wear a ton more makeup than they’d ever wear in public and wigs.

I told them about a woman I know who is a burlesque performer. She’s a very PG-13 burlesque performer, but when she’s made up, you’d have a hard time telling if she was a woman or a man in drag. I asked if that’s what they meant and they were both really adamant that they wanted to be drag queens because drag queens get handed $5 bills and burlesque performers don’t!

Moral of the story: kids are weird.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2023 7:15 AM

Right on, R20. That’s why drag kings are boring. They’re gender-nonconforming women, which isn’t taboo. They lack the subversive element that makes drag queens bizarre and fascinating.

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2023 7:16 AM

Drag is adult burlesque for and by gay men. I wish the definition of drag wasn't being willfully redefined by various special interests, including trans, the straight "mommie" brigade and young people with no knowledge of or appreciation for the art form and its history outside of the latter day seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race. "Drag is for EVERYONE!" No, it's not. Because, if it is, it's not drag anymore. It's just cosplay, which is what drag will soon be reduced to as what once made it unique and special is sacrificed to the cult of inclusivity. And no, kids don't belong in drag. It is for adults and usually in adult settings. End of story.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2023 7:23 AM
[R15] Oh my you are ignorant. Oh my oh my oh my.

No really - is it the same kind of humour as a drag queen show? What exactly are you watching?

It’s hard to understand how deranged people are now. They love to project. They’ll be throwing dollars & whistling at some kindergartener dressed like a trollop, then if you say “hey, maybe it’s little soon to make this into a career…”, they’ll start screaming that you’re the pervert obsessed with kids. Zero self awareness.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2023 3:21 PM

R27, drag kings basically do the same thing, there's different types. Some kings put on a sexy/smooth persona and are working the crowd. They love toying with str8 women in the audience. Some are raunchy and are all about "the bod", may wear a strap on or other accouterments as part of their performance. Usually mocking societal norms. Sometimes they are also the "funny" kings. I've been to an all-kings show and it was great. Lots of laughs. Basically a bunch of butch women, gender-nonconformers, all dragged up as kings, making LOTS of jokes at "themselves", but really at straight men in general & how ridiculous their masculine performances are every day.

For a lesson in how comedy "works":

Lesbians & queers (minority groups) are "punching up" at the straight majority. That's good comedy. Even funnier when they're "masquerading" as the group they mock. The kings will also do some self-deprecation showing they're not absolutely humorless.

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2023 3:37 PM

R2 Fuck off, gay! We're queer, can't you see that? A man married to a woman with a kid is clearly queer, and we're going to your bars to hang out.

So is Desmond too old to be a child drag queen now? His assholes parents pimped him out to everyone, including Michael Alig. He looks like a holocaust victim on ketamine. This kid has great things ahead. If your kid wants to do that, fine, but putting him on fucking tv doing this is a sure way for him to get a beatdown at school. His parents are assholes in the name of being "allies". Leave kids alone. Any time I see some kid on youtube I feel bad for all the shit they must get from their peers.

The parents of the drag kids have the same sickness as parents who put their kids in television, beauty pageants, family vlogs, etc. Stage parents are nuts! Living vicariously through their crotchfruit. The kids don’t understand that their dysfunctional upbringing will be on display for all to see for the rest of their lives, so where’s the consent?

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2023 4:13 PM

Well, there's really not much else to do in Nebraska.

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2023 4:52 PM

He looks like he might be a quarter African American. Maybe half, but I'm thinking less than half.

Which means the kids are part African American, but none of them look it. The daughter MAYBE could pass for Hispanic.

This is the same thing as little girls who are paraded around looking like women on stage, in pageants. by Anonymousreply 61November 13, 2023 9:21 PM

Cute and fun at 6yrs of age. Wait till their 11-14 and sexualized or lots of potential abuse. Drag is an adult art form and this is too soon. Personally, I was a feminine boy and in my presence, had men say to my mother I should’ve been a girl. I was 8-10 yrs old in early 70’s. Confusing for me as I liked boys so I thought hmm…I should be a girl?

Lots of early sex with boys and men by the time I was 14. Where where my parents? Right there as they were friends and I was taught to be quite and deep down I liked it sometimes. Children can be sexual though nobody wants to address that truth. Pretty boys know what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 62November 13, 2023 10:32 PM

Maybe his mom should enter her in pageants.

by Anonymousreply 63November 13, 2023 10:38 PM

Ooo… spooky

by Anonymousreply 64November 13, 2023 10:59 PM

I don’t think kids should do drag in public. He’s too young to consent to this, and the internet is forever. He wants to put on his sister’s dress at home, okay, just don’t make a big deal about it and don’t put it on fucking Facebook.

I wouldn’t bring a kid that young to Pride. But the parents know their kid. Maybe they recognized that he was a young gayling and subtly took him to Pride as a way of showing him that they’re allies, preemptively, for when he’s in middle school and figures himself out. Whatever stops kids from hating themselves and wanting to kill themselves, I’m all for it. I hope it works out for this kid, whatever happens.

by Anonymousreply 65November 13, 2023 11:23 PM
He’s too young to consent to this

This is not at all about consent.

As you can see from the video, he has "consented" many times that he really wants to do drag. Even in front of the State Legislature.

The real issue is that the parents should make the responsible decision of not allowing him to do this in public. And make no mistake, it is their right to make that decision, because he's a minor.

What a responsible parent would and should do is REASON that this child is too young to be performing in adult venues, regardless of how badly he wants to do it.

Let him watch it on television, if he wants to. Invite friends his own age over to the house, and let him do a performance there, in the company of other kids (assuming their parents would allow it).

This couple, as noble as their intentions are, are NOT being responsible parents.

They're opening him up to a real danger from not only predators, but some really hateful people out there who might use religion or "morality" as a means for attacking this kid.

They need to BALANCE this kid's wants, with what is best for him. And what's best for him is to not put him into adult venues, as a young child. It's just not smart.

Just as you wouldn't let your kid eat 10 bags of candy because it's bad for him, you would apply that same logic when it comes to performing in drag.

If he still wants to pursue this as a high schooler or as a teenager, then maybe let him do it later.

by Anonymousreply 66November 13, 2023 11:32 PM

I'm worried for when he grows up. What if drag is just a phase and he grows out of it? He will be reminded of his noteriety as a drag persona for the rest of his life. His parents have exposed it to the world.

I contemplated suicide when I was a teenager, everyone knew I was gay and most judged me negatively for it. Teenagers are the worst. I can't imagine how he is going to deal with his drag persona in middle and high schools.

by Anonymousreply 67November 13, 2023 11:38 PM

Exactly R67. I know parents and adults think it's cute and funny, but his fucking schoolmates are going to be mercilessly clowning him for this shit, and that's why his parents shouldn't be filming it and sharing it. I don't just think that about drag kids, anything kids do shouldn't be put on the internet. All these asshole mommy vloggers too. It's just so hard to be a teen anyhow, imagine you're one of those kids from 8 passengers or whatever that asshole vlog is. They have Coogan laws for movies and tv, they need it for youtube too. Also, any parent that does this shit is a malignant narsy and those people never turn out well. Case in point, this fucking twat who shot and killed her kids that she used to use for clout.
