Was Lucille O'Ball really a closeted lesbian?

She pings.

Yes I know I added an O'.

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2023 4:23 PM

I doubt. She seemed to really loved Desi.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2023 4:26 PM

She was always in "boy trouble" from an early age, I doubt it

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2023 4:30 PM

She wanted to come out, but Gary talked her out of it.

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2023 4:48 PM

Lucille Ball stans

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2023 4:55 PM

Off topic but I remember when Wendy Williams says she met Jane Fonda and Jane looked like she wanted to eat her lunch. She said Jane had very strong lesbian energy. And yes she said this on National television in front of a live audience.

by Anonymousreply 6November 12, 2023 4:58 PM

R4- That's THE funniest comment of the day 😊

by Anonymousreply 7November 12, 2023 5:00 PM

She did a set at the first Michfest which was very well received.

"Viv and I fooled around once. Then she told me she'd had sufficient!"

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2023 5:01 PM

No OP

Actually she was a closeted ASHTRAY

her cigarette voice became quite prominent by the late 1960's.

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2023 5:07 PM

OP, it’s “Lucy O’Ball.”

No, I don’t get lesbian vibes from her. Her voice was ravaged, in the end.

by Anonymousreply 12November 12, 2023 5:18 PM

Alright, not sure what the difference is because Bea Arthur almost had the same register.

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2023 5:22 PM

R6 It's pretty well established Fonda had sex with women. The 60s etc in part responsible... but she's acknowledged it.

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2023 5:23 PM

Doubtful. According to everyone who knew them Desi and Lucy had an incredibly hot sex life. One of the reasons she kept going back to him after leaving him numerous times. The dick was too good.

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2023 5:25 PM

Oh no…she was a well known slut in the 30s and early 40s.

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2023 5:30 PM

TCM did a podcast on Lucy. She was definitely not a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2023 5:35 PM

Jane Fonda wanted to have sex with Wendy Williams?

Yeah, right.

by Anonymousreply 18November 12, 2023 5:37 PM

Maybe she was bi.

by Anonymousreply 23November 12, 2023 6:06 PM

@r19, "Lucy teaches Ethel Merman to sing"

When Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor guest starred on Lucy, Lucy wanted to coach Elizabeth Taylor on her acting to which Richard Burton replied... "if she tried to pull any rank on Elizabeth “she would see, in person, what a Thousand Megaton Hydrogen Bomb does when the warhead is attached and exploded.”

Miss Taylor never got her acting lesson 🙄

by Anonymousreply 24November 12, 2023 6:29 PM

Joan never got the A-list guests when she guest hosted. I'm guessing Johnny had heard one too many grievances from Ball.

by Anonymousreply 25November 12, 2023 6:33 PM

R6 Wendy Williams thinks everyone is gay

by Anonymousreply 26November 12, 2023 7:06 PM

Lucy was scheduled to star in a Desilu Playhouse production of The Children's Hour alongside Betty Furness. During rehearsals Gary Morton stormed onto the stage and pulled Lucy to the side. After a brief, hushed conversation, Lucy exclaimed, "What? They're DYKES??" The episode was immediately scrapped and replaced with a hastily assembled version of Private Lives with Earl Holliman and Jane Russell.

by Anonymousreply 27November 12, 2023 8:02 PM

I remember Wendy Williams saying that Jane hit on her. I believe it. Wendy has an active gaydar. She said that P. Diddy was gay, called it a long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 28November 12, 2023 8:04 PM

Jane was probably checking out Wendy’s bad lacefront or her ridiculous breast implants…

by Anonymousreply 29November 12, 2023 8:07 PM

Lucy had a threesome in Cannes with Jane and Roger Vadim when "Mame" won the Palme d'Or.

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2023 8:15 PM

R26 people who are gay usually do

by Anonymousreply 31November 12, 2023 8:16 PM

She was well known by the elders in Jamestown for being very far from a lesbian

by Anonymousreply 34November 12, 2023 8:24 PM

She did have a hard time getting pregnant with Desi…

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2023 8:31 PM

Lucy- Viv, lets do some HARDCORE scissoring

Viv- LUCY! I'm not a LESBO!

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2023 8:42 PM

Lucy wasn't the bi one in that marriage.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2023 9:01 PM

Lucy was so boring in that clip with Joan Rivers. She didn’t seem enthused to be there. Her responses were so generic.

R38 Believe it or not, I think that was one of Lucille’s better interviews from that period. She’s grumpy briefly after the commercial break, but there are other interviews in which she’s like that nearly the entire time. In the interview with Joan, she actually gets some laughs, which were less likely whenever she was grumpy. I think Carson sometimes had to struggle with Lucille because he knew her manner wasn’t always conducive to making an audience laugh. She seemed relaxed (as relaxed as Lucille could be, which wasn’t that relaxed) with Joan.

by Anonymousreply 40November 12, 2023 10:55 PM

I'm gonna learn ta love that bitch's fire crotch.

by Anonymousreply 41November 12, 2023 11:03 PM

R8: "She did a set at the first Michfest which was very well received."

by Anonymousreply 50November 13, 2023 5:43 PM

I really think she had the hots, and bad, for Desi.

Desi was a womanizer and drunk and would let his other friends *ahem* perhaps have at it, when drinking.

But I think Lucy never got over Desi. She settled, after him, and was bitter.

by Anonymousreply 51November 13, 2023 5:48 PM

Hasn't there been a story floating around the DL for years about how a stewardess approached Lucy on a flight and Lucy threw coffee on her crotch and shoved her face in it and said, "You call that a closeted lesbian?"

by Anonymousreply 61November 14, 2023 12:55 PM

This story about Lucy's childhood is sad.

Her grandfather gifted her brother a gun. They were target shooting in the backyard and a neighbor boy was accidently shot and left paralyzed. They were sued causing financial devastation, her stepfather went to jail and her family became pariahs in the town.

by Anonymousreply 63November 14, 2023 1:51 PM

What is the real story of Lucy and the flying coffee on an airplane? Does anyone know?

by Anonymousreply 64November 14, 2023 2:02 PM

Bea Arthur once said that a significant amount of comediennes are lesbians but most are closeted. She worked with Lucy on Mame so it's possible that Lucy was a closet case or atleast bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 65November 14, 2023 2:15 PM

R61. Lucille

by Anonymousreply 66November 14, 2023 3:04 PM

@r65, Except Lucy really wasn't a natural comedian, she did however have impeccable timing and knew how to ACT funny, but she wasn't the least bit funny herself

by Anonymousreply 67November 14, 2023 3:25 PM

Per the ILL writers, Vivian was the most naturally funny of the cast.

She also studied under Eva Le Gallienne.

I think she was probably bisexual on some level but believed that she could be "fixed" with enough dick and/or psychotherapy. It's probably why Phil tried to weaponize her friendship with Lucille - he knew it was a sore spot for her.

by Anonymousreply 68November 14, 2023 3:45 PM

Lucy was too in love with Desi and hurt by him. She was a hetero in love.

by Anonymousreply 69November 14, 2023 8:08 PM

I laughed out loud at some of her answers there. Her personal humor was more cynical and dry. "Lucy" was cartoonish and helpless, always needing the grown-ups to save her. 180* from the real Lucille.

by Anonymousreply 70November 14, 2023 8:17 PM

Ball admitted she was not a comedienne. Her comic acting was heavily schtick-laden and rehearsed.
