The old adage of Las Vegas was that everything you wanted to see, do or eat at required you to pass through the casino.
Why on Earth would anyone build such a huge expensive attraction in Las Vegas without a casino?

James Dolan is well known to be a moron

It was only open for 2 days before the end of the quarter and the report came out. Not a true accurate account of a brand new property.

I think this will become something like the Strat - something huge to be looked at from a distance but not something anybody necessarily needs to go to, or at least in numbers big enough to make a profit.
Unfortunately the nature of what the Sphere is means that the most logical method of monetizing its novelty - by building a hotel/casino next to it - is impossible because that would obscure its sight lines. It will probably be sold in a couple of years to MGM or Wynn who can use it to advertise their own properties.

Is it strictly a concert venue?

It deserves to lose James Dolan.

It had enormous start-up costs. Too soon to measure. I was there opening night it was fabulous. I can see a lot of music acts that will find the idea of a residence in Vegas appealing as opposed to touring.
Built for concerts, but they are also showing a film when it’s otherwise empty.

But Las Vegas residencies are only cost effective because they build the venues inside the casinos. Everyone has to pass through the casino to get to the MGM Grand Garden or Caesars Coliseum.

I’ve heard the experience is incredibly impressive.
That said, I would never go, but then I’d never go to Vegas.

It looks cool but I think being inside it would give me terrible vertigo.

That’s not true about the casinos. I saw Lady Gaga in a stand alone theatre. It might have technically been attached to a building that has a casino, but we entered and left directly to the street. She’s making a million a night and recently announced she wants to stay forever.

Lady Gaga's residency is at the Park MGM Casino. You may have left directly to the street but many people who attended the concert would have walked through the casino floor or visited one of its restaurants before or after.

They will make millions both from the venue inside and advertising on the outer exosphere. It may take a while to recapture original investment costs, but it should do so at a future timepoint.
I know people who've seen the U2 show and they were blown away. It could very well become the venue of choice for short-to mid-length residencies for the "upper elite" of touring acts: the Stones could make great use of it; McCartney, whose shows have become increasingly multimedia-based; Beyonce; Harry Styles; and Taylor Swift (should she choose to take a break from the endless stadiums).

The Stones? McCartney? My God you're old.

WTF r13? I'm their junior by decades. But I'm not ignorant - they are some of the highest grossing tour acts of the last decade. AND can make use of the elaborate visual multimedia the Sphere offers. PLUS their fanbase has the disposable income at the ready to buy the pricy tickets.
They're a perfect fit for this kind of venue, I'd be surprised if the Stones management isn't working out some kind of a deal for next year when they tour behind this recent record.
And did you see where I mentioned Styles, Swift and Beyonce? I guess not.

R13 has the reading comprehension level of a 3rd grader.

How can it be losing money, is it owned by Trump?

Have they thought of booking the Countess LuAnn for a residency?

I hate Vegas but I got free tickets to see U2 and a free Venetian room so I’m going in January. A friend told me it’s queasy-making.

I am sure I would get sick watching U2 in the Sphere. I would need to pack sunglasses.

And you're stupid.

Highest grossing tour acts of 2022:
#2 Genisis, #3 Elton John, #7 The Eagles, #9 Coldplay, #10 Garth brooks.

I’d love to see what Laurie Anderson or Peter Gabriel could do with the venue.

I don’t blame Londoners. It’s garish and only belongs in tacky places like Vegas or the UAE.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 16, 2023 6:49 PM |
It belongs in Miami.
