The musical version had some catchy tunes.
"Nice white kids who like to lead the way / And once a month we have our Negro Day!" is one of the lines in the song "Nicest Kids in Town."
James Marsden looks good in this piece.

Big as a a HOUSE. And also the guy who played Link was so hot. He looked like Elvis in the best way. Josh Charles was hot in this, too. He actually still is…I’ve always been attracted to his nose.

A fine parody-and-homage to the genre, done without sacrificing Waters' transgressive palaver.
So many fun performances. And Divine's best performance.

I read Betty Bacall was up for the role of Edna should Divine cancel.
Betty Bacall was anxious about doing this film over the high caliber of the High Point Coffee Commercials.

I love how he didn't take any of Amber's crap and put her in her place when she began insulting Tracey during the auditions.

It's weird, there was a movie with similar subject matter that came out the same year. It was released a couple weeks before Hairspray in February of 1988. It even has the same actress who played Amber's brunette friend Lou Ann.

R47 this movie is too politically incorrect to be 'woke.'
And unlike 'woke' movies, it allows for fun and doesn't take itself too seriously and doesn't beat you over the head with the message.

John Waters was very generous to the actors who comprised the council. They all got a lot of camera time despite being second tier to the main cast.. That’s how Josh Charles is so noticeable.
You can even figure out who’s on Tracy’s side and who is on Amber’s.

In the 2004 commentary for the movie, Ricki Lake and John Waters said they had no idea what happened to the actress who played Penny as they never saw her again. She would get dropped off by her mom every day. I thought she was cute and funny.
They may have reunited since then but I guess some actors really do vanish.

Among many other things I like the fact that most of the actors playing teenagers look like they were actual teenagers and the movie was being filmed. I’d like the 1978 movie grease where they looked about 20 years older than teenagers.
