Why don’t they show the dungeon?

It’s very country house

I love it and would have it in a heartbeat. Great bones.

It's lovely. It's too big for me, but it's beautiful.

I like it a lot but it needs a lot of updating. And why does he have bookshelves, in that bathroom, near the shower? I love that pool and the porch. The kitchen has to go. I thought it would have been a lot more expensive. I am surprised that he would have posters of his musicals in the bedroom. In his studio, office, yes. But in his bedroom?

Looks very check-out-counter frau-magazine "tasteful".

I think it's a bit tacky to have half of your walls plastered with posters from your own shows, even if (especially if?) you're as accomplished as Stephen Sondheim.

R9 My thoughts exactly. Really surprising.

It's oddly staged---some parts have empty shelves, but many rooms seem extremely cluttered. It's difficult to tell if there are low ceilings or odd perspective. The state should get a better realtor.

I could never live with the low ceilings, and the absence of much architectural interest.

It's a beautiful piece of property in a lovely area of Connecticut.

It’s not taking long for the Widow Sondheim to liquidate things.

Pretty low ceilings in some of the rooms.
Bedroom looks awful with the low ceiling, that behemoth chest of drawers and huge, throne-like chairs.
Yes, bathroom is very odd! A wall of bookshelves (with ladder!) behind the sinks?
The piano room is nice. That's probably the nicest room. The enclosed porch area is nice. Pool is nice.
The posters don't bother me that much, but it's odd that, aside from his posters, he doesn't have wall art.

Why are people assuming that the house has not been staged? Was anyone there when he was alive?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 10, 2023 7:43 PM |
R17: No realtor would want that much clutter and empty spaces seem like places where someone decided to take something away. The effect is not coherent and doesn't help the appeal of the house.

I prefer my ceilings to be higher than five feet and would burn every rug in that "house."
it's not really a house. It's a shambling series of shacks and oversized train cars.

Where the infamous S&S dungeon, or was that limited to the NYC place?

R2 A CONVERSATION PIT I MUST HAVE IT

A friend has been there but isn’t around this weekend to ask if they’ve staged it.
I suspect it’s only lightly staged. You can see how well the furniture (expensive stuff) fits the space. And they seem to be going for a look where you can imagine Sondheim using the space.
I bet they are hoping the buyer wants most of the furniture.

I don't like these New England grand homes that have the New England low ceilings. The 2nd floor is especially squashed in this example.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 11, 2023 10:24 PM |
That seems like a reasonable asking price for all that.

When they sold Angela Lansbury's house it was filled with Lansbury-related posters and art too. I'd like to think it's just an attempt to charge a premium and really drive home the fact a celebrity lived there, and so whenever a pricy or questionable piece of art was taken down it was replaced with a show poster or something.

I like the library in the bathroom!

Beautifully lichen-covered wooden furniture outside, but nothing growing on the pergola—weird.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 11, 2023 11:27 PM |
It DOES have really great bones, and although outdated in quite a few areas, I think what it really opens itself up to is a buyer refurbishing it/ making it their own.

Of course it was, r26. I wouldn't be surprised if she had an area where she displayed her awards and had framed window cards. Beyond that, she wasn't grande.
