I saw an interesting video on this. It’s because he doesn’t translate to US black female audiences.

Because in the USA, biracial or mixed race people of black heritage are treated as basically black due to the historical legacy of the one-drop rule, even if they identify as mixed or even pass as “exotic” like Rashida Jones, their blackness is an important part of their greater identity and PR platform.

Biracial or mixed race people of black heritage in Britain and Ireland are considered mixed race, they tend to date white people and so on and consider themselves British AND Nigerian/etc. I’m not saying that black people in America don’t do this too, but there’s an overarching umbrella of “black community” that exists as a market group.

So when they come to the USA they don’t know how to market themselves to black audiences - in Regé-Jean’s case, black women. Because he needs to navigate through Hollywood the way Eddie Redmayne and Keira Knightley don’t. So RJP would need to model for SKIMS, be interviewed by Gayle, talk about his love for his black nurse mother in Essence.
