Reacher Season 2

I love this show. And not just because of Ritchson's plump hindquarters. Doesn't hurt though. Miles ahead of the TWO meh Tom Cruise joints.

Yeah season 1 was a guilty pleasure for me. I'd read a few of the books and expected it to be awful, but I actually really enjoyed it.

Looking forward to season 2, but as is often the case, sequels are rarely as good as the original...

The writing is insipid, the pacing a crawl, the supporting actors flavorless…but Ritchson.

Yeah I wasn't sure Ritchson could pull it off (so to speak), especially when you look at characters he's played like Thad Castle, but he managed it.

I like the actor. Despite playing the kind of lawless character MAGAts jerk off to, he is anti-MAGA in real life. Is it worth watching?

Well he’s big. I can’t remember, is he popping all the clearly delineated muscle groups because that’s not Reacher. Reacher has never been to the gym.

First season was “just okay”. My biggest issue is that he talked/explained too much. In the books he’s practically mute. You read his thoughts but even that, you only understand afterwards, after something happens. I don’t know how a good scriptwriter would convey that but the absolute easiest/no thought involved way is to have the character talk it out.

Reacher is two things: big. laconic.

He's pretty quiet in season 1. Obviously he can't be as quiet as the book character for obvious reasons, but he only speaks when it's necessary.

What dialogue? There’s dialogue?

I figured this was filmed in Canada. I can always tell. Even when mimicking US towns and cities there's something off and not quite American.

The sunlight that far up North is dull.

Reason film production seems confined to the southern half of the US - Southern California, New Mexico, Louisiana and Georgia - has as much to do with the quality of sunlight as the warm weather. Warm, rich, saturated.

S1 had that really awkward shower sex scene. It just didn’t seem like that actress/character deserved a big Jack Reacher pounding. Would’ve been better if he just had a one night stand with some indiscriminate big titted ho. Or if he just masturbated himself. .

I dunno r8. I remember a scene where he sitting in the middle of a back seat talking to two people in front and he was explaining something to them, and it dawned on me that it was very un-reacher-like. Yeah, I know the info has to be conveyed somehow, that’s when skillful writing is needed.

I've been enjoying season 2 so far. It's a bit silly, but you kind of expect that.

Ritchson is even bigger this season compared to last. It doesn't really fit in with his nomad lifestyle - quite how he gets to the gym every day when he's constantly moving around is anyone's guess!

I didn't like the first episode of season 2. But I kept watching, and by the time I finished episode 3, I was looking forward to episode 4. It's a comedown, for sure, from watching Fellow Travelers all these weeks, but...I don't know. I'll watch it.

Does Reacher have sex in the books?

I was the same R23. I took me 3 tries to get through episode 1, but the next two seemed to fly by.

I wish they'd just publish all episodes on the same day, like they did for season one.

Adding one to handful of episodes each week is becoming more commonplace on streaming services, which removes what made them popular in the first place - ie being able to watch at your own pace. I personally don't binge watch, I tend to watch one episode a night - maybe two at the weekend.

I know you can just wait till all episodes have been added before watching, but I worry about spoilers if I do that after it happened to me on The Mandalorian.

I think you may be misremembering. Amazon rarely publishes the entire season on the release date. Of course, I could be wrong, but most of the shows, especially new ones, are published weekly in order to give it time to build an audience.

In some cases, it does the bullshit "split season" where it puts out half the shows, then delays a few months before publishing the second half of the season.

I tried the first season on the recommendation of a coworker, and it was surprisingly engrossing and good. I will start watching season 2 this weekend.

Agree, R26. Especially with the holidays fast approaching. Viewers could get stuck in with the whole season.

R27 According to its Wikipedia page, all episodes of the first season was added on February 4, 2022.

I suspect it might be because it was a new show then. However, as it was so popular, they've staggered this season.

The first three episodes were added on December 15 and now they're going to drip feed one episode a week till January 19.

There's something a little bit gay about season 2 Reacher's walk.

I think it's because Ritchson is playing him as stiff and emotionless and sometimes it comes across as a slightly femme walk. It's not all the time and there's nothing else gay about him (before I get shot down).

The length of time between seasons of streaming shows is bizarre.

They used to do 24 one-hour (48 minutes without commercials) each year. Then, a "full season" got scaled back to 18-22, but they still dutifully rolled them out each fall. Then, they started doing those split seasons with a huge winter break. Now, they do 8-10 shows with 18 months between seasons if we're lucky.

I know people think Lee Child is a great thriller writer but this plot as it’s unfolding in the first three eps of the new season seems very blah to me. Hope there are some twists, turns and reversals to come.

I find him riveting, so of course I will promptly watch each new ep. But so far I think season 1 was better.

REACHER ROCKS!

"Reacher" and Dolly Parton may be two of the ONLY things MAGAts and the gays can agree upon. The show's definitely wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, but it's fun, easy watching to see Reacher utterly destroy every asshole who crosses his path. Yes, you can definitely tell this isn't one of Amazon's mega-budget shows (most recently "Citadel" and "The Rings of Power") from the ridiculously half-assed FX like the entire helicopter scene in the finale. (And btw my brother's read all of the books. The ending in the original was "way more boring," given that it didn't include Reacher holding himself AND a gurney with Dixon strapped to it flying 100mph at hundreds of feet up.)

Just a few FYIs, since I love this show but have somehow missed the earlier threads about it: first, both Lee Childs (who wrote the novels) and Nick Santora (who created the show) knew that Reacher on the page simply doesn't work as Reacher onscreen. You need far more dialogue and action, particularly when the plot's at least a bit complicated, plus it involves a whole slew of new characters (both good & bad). You *definitely* need as much exposed flesh – preferably engaged in fucking as often as possible – when Alan Ritchson's your lead. (His fling with Dixon was added for that specific reason.)

If they didn't need exposition ... well, Reacher would basically be a less-inventive, but vastly brawnier, John Wick. (Half of his dialogue in the last one had three words or less per line.)

The show's already departed from the book series in a number of ways. The first novel was the basis for the first season (and largely the same), but they skipped ahead a bit to focus on the first novel in the series that isn't focused almost entirely on Reacher. He led a highly decorated Army team, so the producers opted to bump it up for S2 if only to give Reacher a de facto "family." (If that sounds a lot like "Fast & Furious": hey, guess which movie Ritchson was hired for solely to give the impression that midget Vin Diesel can kick his ass in the final part! No big deal that Ritchson's 10 inches taller. Hey, if Tammy Cruise would make it work with Henry Cavill in "Mission: Impossible," so can Vin!)

Also, in the super-obvious low-budget department: the book's setting is L.A. and Vegas. Amazon moved it to NYC & Atlantic City because it's impossible to fake the desert in Canada. (OTOH Netflix has a quite large production facility in Albuquerque now. Not sure why they didn't just film it there.)

R56, you are correct. I'm willing to suspend a WHOLE LOT of disbelief for this show, and this show does indeed require a lot, but that scene crossed the line. It was unbelievable. Ridiculous. Broke suspension of disbelief completely.

But other than that, I enjoyed the season. Not as good as season one imho though, but still looking forward to season 3.

I thought it was entertaining enough. Let's face it: Reacher is basically James Bond in that he gets into ridiculous physical altercations and always wins, sometimes with laughable absurdity. The helicopter scene could have been in a 007 film without question.

In other related news, I saw Alan Ritchson has his own YouTube channel primarily focused on religion. I was thinking "oh here we go, what fundie nonsense am I gonna hear?" but gave it a go. Anyway, I watched one video where he was criticising the term "woke" and effectively giving liberal viewpoints. He made it clear lots of fellow fundies had criticised him for the taking the role of Reacher because they saw it as un-Christian (I shit you not).

The sex scenes in Reacher are always so ridiculous. I think because he’s always so easily seduced by these tiny women, it’s never the case that a sexual impulse originates with him and he has to show some game. It’s more like some tiny woman pops a quarter in him and gets on for the ride. lol

The gay character, Chad, couldn’t be gayer if they hung Christmas ornaments on him and put a Christmas angel on top of his head.

I thought the story in season 1 was better, and most of the actors who made up his extended posse in the flashbacks in season 2 were mediocre.

My main problem is that Ritchson didn’t get as naked this season as he did in the first when we saw his ass in the shower sex scene. Wondered if he thinks the success of the series means he doesn’t have to continue to strip for his art?

R62 Yeah, I think the idea is he's so irresistible that women can't help throw themselves at him. He doesn't strike me as the type to have sex with random women on the road, which implies he's not really that bothered about having sex.
