Gayle King talks to Barbra in the kickoff of the book tour and the release of her memoir on Tuesday. Check out her "mall"of clothes and stuff she bought .Apparently she is a shopaholic and a hoarder.
I'm surprised she settled for Gayle. Did O turn her down? "Enough with the fucking painted mikes!"

R15, she makes out that she had a romantic relationship with Prince Charles… because she believes he flirted with her. I doubt she’s slept with more than two people.

Wasn't she shtupping Mandy Patinkin during Yentl? And wasn't there Jon Peters? So she was married to Elliot GOuld and Brolin, but she wasn't dormant in between, R17. And Prince Charles probably thought he was being charming towards her, wth his jugers and Ichabod Crane features.

She’s not a shopaholic and hoarder- she’s a collector who happens to be very wealthy and created a folly for some of her collections. By the way, at least twice she auctioned some of her collections the the tune of double digit millions and given the proceeds to charity and to fund her foundation. What she really is, is a very smart woman who knows how to use money. Much of her art collection is bequeathed to museums- and at times she lets them borrow pieces. Morons on this thread.

The piece at r12 is interesting for noting that when Streisand was making a first impression on audiences she was singing material written and popularized decades earlier. In the middle of the rock era and during the "British Invasion", she was a throwback except she was already in league with the most extraordinary vocal talents of any era.

This a classic rich person’s way of getting some other entity to pay for the proper storage, insuring and security of the rich person’s art collection. It’s how the Rockefellers started the MoMa, right there in their backyard off of Fifth Avenue.

Gayle's face on the reactions is heaven. You can tell she's like, "Am I really dealing with this crazy old person?"

Thank you, R12.
Great segment, and Wesley Morris is wonderful. God, that man is hot. He's handsome. He's fills that shirt out quite nicely. But what really makes him hot is that he's interesting. He knows music, and he knows what made Barbra a legend!

Yes, R56, I was most impressed with Mr. Morris.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 6, 2023 5:37 PM |
Mo Rocca was totally into it.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 6, 2023 5:49 PM |
Yes, I so loved the introductory segment with Mo and Wesley' commentary and seeing all those incredible old tapes and photos of the beginning of Barbra's career. I was a huge fan as a highly precocious pre-teen as early as 1963 but was done with her by the time she did Hello Dolly! and that awful What About Today album?
Sad for me to go back and see what the early attraction/fascination was and what became of her. And that mall....! Oy.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 6, 2023 5:50 PM |
It looks like she directed it. Half of the segment is just old clips and photos. Half the book is her going over old slights, critiques and untruths. She's obsessed with herself.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 6, 2023 6:09 PM |
Ok this was hysterical. Gayle was clearly freaked out and Barbra was like that crazy lady at a yard sale.
The best was Barbra wanting Gayle to touch the purple fabric.
Streisand was like, “let the magic touch you” and Gayle was like….um…okay?

She does, look around her mouth and eyes but this is a professional interview. There are twenty people behind that camera, make-up, lighting trying to erase 81 years. She looks good, not like the alien Joan Rivers died resembling.

I couldn't watch the interview though, I've heard this shit many times before. Who the fuck cares at this point. Is she so clueless that she forgets every time that she's told the same fucking stories for years.
I'm sorry that her father died when she was 18 months. What is easy to forget is that it was in the middle of WW2 and people were losing sons, fathers and husbands by the thousands every month. Not sure why her lose is so unique.

I agree the plastic surgery is bad, but the mall is a dream come true for every collector who has to constantly figure out how to display, or at least where to put your crap.
I know to non-collectors it all seems bat-shit insane - and objectively I can agree, but I also just bought another vintage TWA poster I have no room to hang.
To have the resources to both buy whatever strikes your fancy, and to properly display it is enviable.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | November 7, 2023 11:33 PM |
I'd be pissed if she died and I was one of her heirs that had to clean up her hoarding mess. Oh well, they'd be loaded anyway so they could just hire somebody to load up the dumpsters.

No R54, when bequeathed, yes tax deduction for charity. But if she chose to keep and leave in her estate, it would reap much more value to her estate. Loaning is purely altruistic. Do you really suppose people with collections like Streisand don’t know how to take care of and house their art? Lol. You don’t have a clue. FYI, I know these things which most reasonable informed do as well- first hand. I spend thousands on maintaining my best stuff- I know she does too as does anyone with valuable art.

Streisand was early to the Art Deco market and collected truckloads. She tired of it and sold most at a handsome profit.

Her decorative art tastes has devolved into very treacly aesthetics. Her "ye olde towne shopping street" in her carpenter gothic ? ersatz farm manor ? "estate" is the pits.

R91 - I understand your point, but there are basements and then there are basements.
Her home is already furnished and decorated with antiques and art. She also collects, as we saw, dolls and vintage clothes (I know there’s more) - setting up themed areas is a a great way to organize and display them.
I think calling it a mall instead of a gallery is a bit silly and the conceit of a faux New England street of shops, as opposed to just a series of rooms, is twee, but it is well done. (Her whole ersatz New England Malibu compound is really twee, but again, well executed). I imagine it’s in the basement because the house is already pretty large.
If she’d built another building on the property to house some of these collections I think it would come across as less weird, but sunlight is often not great for vintage items, so the basement location does make some practical sense.

Barbra looked like a garden gnome standing next to her.

R103, I saw Barbra when she wasn't on and wearing flats. She was shockingly petite. I was expecting a 9 foot tall Jewish goddess. I think she's like 5'5". I would have walked right by her if I hadn't know it was her. In fact, I was like two feet away from her an didn't realize it was her for a few seconds. She was filming Prince of Tides in Grand Central.

I'm not a huge fan of Barbra's work, though I do like her late 70s/early 80s pop stuff, I wish she'd done more of that. I love "Prisoner," which was the theme song from the craptastic Eyes Of Laura Mars, starring Miss Dunaway.
Like the above poster, I have always admired her politics and how outspoken for liberal causes she is. She done a lot of good work in that area. And she's always been very supportive of gay men.

But continuing on that truthful theme, someone should ask Barbra, "Who fucked up your hair?"
