Self Setting Clocks

Today is the day for the US to shift from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard time which means update clocks, watches, etc.

Have any of you used a self setting clock which automatically updates the time at the shift to and from Daylight Savings Time?

Apparently there are different types with different methods of correcting a clock's time.

If you have used such a clock, how quickly is the update done? How accurate?

What problems have you experienced?

Would you recommend such a clock?

I love people who today tear their hair out because they can't figure out how to change the clocks on their stoves, microwaves, cars, cable box, etc. Mostly maga dumb.

If it's truly self setting, OP, are you asking about all it's flaws?

by Anonymousreply 1November 4, 2023 7:16 PM

I received one as a gift and it never worked right. Two weeks after a time change it would change two hours the wrong way, or something else ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 2November 4, 2023 7:53 PM

Seems someone is having major anxiety issues over the clocks changing.

Smart devices change automatically. Analogue clocks must be adjusted manually. Quite simple. Any hybrid instrument is dumb.

And this archaic nonsense of time change twice annually is absurd. But of course this is ‘MERICA. We are doomed.

Don’t get me started about failure to convert to metric or Celsius measurements.

OP has posted what might be the simplest, dullest, and most yawn-inducing post of the year.

Congrats OP!

I use this; it is phenomenally accurate; it uses the GPS satellite system for its coordination signal.

This is also a good one.

Maybe if you embraced tech you wouldn’t recoil twice a year?

by Anonymousreply 9November 4, 2023 9:28 PM

I don't own a clock or a watch.

by Anonymousreply 10November 4, 2023 9:28 PM

As R5 stated smart devices update automatically and the manual clocks are fairly easy to adjust.

The thing that is always a bit of a mystery to me after time changes (and any outages) is the controls for our pool and our landscape lighting, which always goes wildly off base all by itself, not an hour but, like, hey, let me light shit up at 3 am! Wheeee! I don't know why. Everything else seems to be logical.

Like the US, Europe also changes time in the spring and fall.

Europe "fell back" on Oct 29th.

Daylight Saving Time is one of the best things ever invented. Only the misinformed THINK it's best to do away with the twice yearly change and have NOT thought through the consequences. BTW, it was abolished at least once over the decades by congress and they Quickly reverted back to it as people were in an uproar. LEARN from history and past mistakes!

by Anonymousreply 13November 4, 2023 10:42 PM

And anyone complaining about their messed up body clock has never flown to Chicago for a weekend? Or Denver? Or New York? Gimme a break.

by Anonymousreply 14November 4, 2023 10:46 PM

They’re called iPhones. And Apple Watches.

by Anonymousreply 15November 4, 2023 10:47 PM

OP, I heard those newfangled Radaranges cause cancer but keep the Reds among us in check.

by Anonymousreply 16November 4, 2023 10:49 PM

What time change??

by Anonymousreply 17November 4, 2023 11:03 PM

OP correctly said "Daylight Saving Time," then reverted to the commonly-misused "Savings Time?" Unfortunately, DL doesn't let us edit mistakes .. or can we?

by Anonymousreply 18November 4, 2023 11:14 PM

It doesn’t matter until next March anyway

by Anonymousreply 19November 4, 2023 11:23 PM

I agree that clocks you have to set manually are too much of a bother. The only one I have left is the one in my car, and I don’t change it when the time changes. If I were to get a wall clock again, it would have to be a connected device that sets the time automatically.

Time stands still for me.

by Anonymousreply 21November 4, 2023 11:49 PM

Thank you, R6!

And 21 responses! More than I expected.

It so happens I have an old kitchen clock I really like that I plan to keep. I'd like to replace the clock movement with an automatic one.

And, R8, I'll check to see where it's possible to buy a clock movement used in that LaCrosse model's movement. Perhaps I can replace the old movement on my clock with this newer type.

Ah, Datalounge, I knew when I started the thread that I was taking a risk, but the snark level was low and as I had hoped, I got some serious responses. Along with the yearly discussion of the pros and cons of Daylight Savings Time.

Thanks all.

I didn’t notice the L in OP’s headline.

by Anonymousreply 23November 5, 2023 12:16 AM

My alarm clock is also an iPhone charger and speaker system. Whenever you plug in the phone to charge, the clock automatically updates itself using the time on the phone.

The pain-in-the-ass clock is the microwave. You can't just program "7:43" and be done with it. You have to enter the year, the month, the date, the time, am or pm, and confirm each step as you go.

by Anonymousreply 24November 5, 2023 2:42 AM

Shelf shetting clocksh?

by Anonymousreply 25November 5, 2023 2:49 AM

I have a clock by my bedside that automatically updates but a few years back, the time of the change shifted by a few weeks so it changes the time a few weeks before in both the fall and spring. This always catches me off guard and causes a panic. It did it a few weeks ago, so I had to manually reset it to another time zone and now, tomorrow, will set it to the correct one. It's really useless.

by Anonymousreply 26November 5, 2023 2:52 AM

The only clocks I need to manually set are the stove and microwave. They're old but in excellent condition. I take care of my things!

by Anonymousreply 27November 5, 2023 3:19 AM

We are in that period of time when it's not clear it's old 1am or new 1am.

by Anonymousreply 28November 5, 2023 5:06 AM

r27 my microwave and stove are 6 yrs old and need manual adjustment. quick press of a few buttons.

by Anonymousreply 29November 5, 2023 10:03 AM

r28 is must have been daylight saving time 1 am because the time happens at 2 am CST.

by Anonymousreply 30November 5, 2023 10:04 AM

Is a wristwatch still a fine gift for college graduation?

by Anonymousreply 31November 5, 2023 10:58 AM

[quote]OP correctly said "Daylight Saving Time," then reverted to the commonly-misused "Savings Time?" Unfortunately, DL doesn't let us edit mistakes .. or can we?

You're new here, aren't you, r18?

No, no edit function. Never has been, never will be. I wouldn't want one. Trolls would have a field day with it. I'd be happy with a "preview" option...but that's going to happen either.

I have about half a dozen analog clocks. It really isn't a big deal to change them, though. One is a museum piece. That one I leave alone.

by Anonymousreply 32November 5, 2023 11:33 AM

r13 Permanent Standard Time is said to be more in line with the body's natural rhythms.

by Anonymousreply 34November 5, 2023 12:54 PM

R32 There was a time when we had PREVIEW to edit before we posted. Muriel, bring it back.

by Anonymousreply 35November 5, 2023 1:31 PM

Have you ever watched TV after midnight to see how they handle the change? Do they delete or add programs to account for the change?

by Anonymousreply 36November 5, 2023 2:04 PM

Brand and model, please?

[quote][R32] There was a time when we had PREVIEW to edit before we posted. Muriel, bring it back.

Huh. When was that, r35? I don't remember that. Preview would be all I would want.

I'm pretty good about proof reading, but tend to fuck up formatting like italics and bolding.

[quote]Brand and model, please?

r37 — it's a few years old and they don't make it any more. It's an iHome clock. This is pretty close.

Mine was about $50 at Costco. I've been very pleased with it.
