Shirley MacLaine is certainly a legend: Understudies in “Pajama Game” on Broadway, gets a Paramount contract in 1956 and is working with Alfred Hitchcock and Martin & Lewis (when they were top box office stars) within the year. Considered a big enough name to topline expensive productions in the 1960s, and keeps working virtually up to this day, having accumulated an Oscar and several nominations.

Annette Bening developes a good reputation onstage as actress despite her air of ice queen breeding, goes to Hollywood where she continues to corner the market (with Nicole Kidman) on playing cold, ritzy dames. Is smart enough to land and keep Warren Beatty for a husband and uses his contacts and clout to maintain a mystique despite doing little memorable work in mostly negligible movies. Durable? Shrewd? Clever? Yup.

Legend? Nope.

OMG, until R11's post I'd forgotten they were sisters-in-law.

It’s hilarious how much of The Exorcist is based on here. Chris MacNeil, Shirley MacLaine, single mother actress, etc. Shirley was a terrible mother and is off the charts narcissistic.

Shirley still look like herself in the Downton Abbey series, but I do not recognize her on stage in the clip.

R21 that reminds me, she had a nude scene in that 2003 TV miniseries SALEM WITCH TRIALS co-starring Kirstie Alley and Alan Bates.

Shirley played Rebecca Nurse and there's a scene where they have to inspect her for a witch's teat, so she gets undressed completely in front of everyone. You saw full-body ass but no frontal.

I remember being shocked because she was pushing 70.

R25, Warren would just cry, he loves her too much. Leslie Caron, who had a long affair with him, said in her biography he's only attracted to women who remind him of Shirley. She also said those two should have run Hollywood.

Why do people stop dying their hair? No, white/gray/blue dies not look edgy and brave. It just looks granny.

R34 I'm guessing at a certain age people stop caring what they look like, don't want the effort of maintenance and aren't interested in other people's opinions.

R35, During the COVID lockdown when hair salons were closed and women could not have their hair dyed professionally, many of them went natural, liked it and kept it.

I've seen better dancing at a hoe down.

The first thing I remember when I think of her is that made for tv movie about her new age search for meaning. As a kid I got all into it until the very end. She's soaking in a hot tub by herself at night in Peru or someplace and all these beams of light of different colors start dancing all around her and the hot tub. I was like that's it?
