John Hamill was born in Shepherds Bush, London, England in 1947. After school he went on to model as a “physique model” (he was one of the ones who was doing nudie flicks and photos, not bodybuilding contests) in the late 1960s before going into acting. He was featured in many beefcake rags and someone in 8mm “posing strap” films which gained him a gay following. He went on to study acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and then landed a role in the stage farce “There's a Girl in My Soup”.
He left the “model” world behind to get into acting in the 1970s. He did numerous tv guest spots and a few low budget films but he was hardly getting work so he started acting in David Grant films, which featured a lot of sex scenes and nudity. Bi-sexual David Grant offered him these roles because he knew of his background as a “physique model” and was a massive fan of Hamill. Starring in these films would permanently hurt his career and no one would hire him outside of the occasional small guest spot on a show here and there. His final credit ever was in an episode of “The Bill” in 1989.
In 1974 he decided to write and direct a film starring himself because he wasn’t getting work. In 1975 he started production on this independent sex film titled “Doing The Best I Can”., hoping it would be a success that would lead to him being offered good, profound directing and acting jobs. After pouring all his money into the film, midway through filming he ran out of money and the film was canceled. The film starred him and his fiancé as the leading lady.
Due to no job offers and never getting parts during the audition process, he left acting in the late 80s and went on to run a Pine Furnisher shop.
Years later, Hamill's final verdict was "The sex movies ruined my career. But you know how it is, I was out of work, the birds were smashing, and I've always been a born flasher".
