Type 2 Diabetics…Let’s talk

I was diagnosed with diabetes about five or so years ago, I am type 2 and am 50 yrs old. I was put on ozempic last year and lost 30-40 lbs with no effort.

I have a terrible sweet tooth which is how I became diabetic in the first place. My endocrinologist says I can cheat twice a week, but the truth is that I cheat almost every day.

In the last month, I have stabbing pains in both feet and excruciating pins and needles in my right hand in the middle of the night for about an hour. My GP says that I have carpal tunnel in my hand, but I have read in several places that the pinky is unaffected in carpal tunnel, whereas it is the worst part for me.

Do you guys cheat with your diet ever? Are pains in feet and hands inevitable?

by Anonymousreply 28October 25, 2023 7:45 PM

Well, the good news is, soon you won't have feet.

by Anonymousreply 1October 23, 2023 8:13 PM

OP what’s your A1C? If it’s been in the normal range you should be ok. If it hasn’t, you could have neuropathy. See your endo right away. I won’t tell you the sad tale of a friend who didn’t.

by Anonymousreply 2October 23, 2023 8:25 PM

Pins and needles is your body's way of telling you that it's time for cake!

by Anonymousreply 3October 23, 2023 8:30 PM

Define "cheat"

Are you talking about eating a whole cake in one sitting?

Or just eating two cookies?

by Anonymousreply 4October 23, 2023 8:38 PM

Cheat is bad. Cheat is a box of cookies in 24 hrs.

Is there anything that can be done for a sweet tooth?

by Anonymousreply 5October 23, 2023 8:56 PM

OP, listen to your body, darling. I ignored the warning signs, despite knowing diabetes runs in my mother's side of the family, I ended being diagnosed with colon cancer (there's a link between colon cancer & untreated diabetes),. Now, I take Metformin twice a day, Duloxetine for nerve pain, & insulin.

NO SUGAR.

by Anonymousreply 6October 23, 2023 9:02 PM

OP you don’t want to hear this but once you withdraw from refined sugar (which is a tough and annoying process) your body really doesn’t crave it anymore.

Otherwise - buy some dates, those are sweet and not terrible for you. You can cut them in half and put some unsweetened peanut butter in the middle. Quite tasty.

by Anonymousreply 7October 23, 2023 9:25 PM

OP, do you check your blood sugar multiple times a day?

If not, you should.

Wait about 90 minutes after you "cheat" and see what your blood sugar is.

I found it stunning how high my blood sugar was after a single piece of cake or a handful of cookies.

Can only imagine what your blood sugar might be after an entire box of cookies.

You do save a lot not buying shoes.

by Anonymousreply 9October 23, 2023 10:55 PM

[quote]Wait about 90 minutes after you "cheat" and see what your blood sugar is.

Actually you about 4 or 5 hours after you cheat with that box of cookie.

Check it a 90 minutes, which is when blood sugar is supposed to be at its peak after eating. Then check it again at 4 or 5 hours and compare that to the reading at 90 minutes.

OP, I'm not diabetic but was prediabetic once. I cut out ALL sugar because there was no fucking way I wanted diabetes. I'm no longer prediabetic and now I allow myself sugar on the weekends only and even then in small amounts. But you can do things like bake with Stevia instead of sugar. I bought myself an ice cream maker and was making ice cream with Stevia and extra dark chocolate pieces from an 85% dark chocolate bar ground up.

You can even bake with Stevia but you also have to be careful because now it's been found to possibly be a heart attack contributor.

The bottom line is, is your life really worth that sugar? Sugar is fine every now and then but if you have to have it every day, it's an addiction and should be treated as such. Don't have it in the house or have dark chocolate if you really need a sweet fix.

OP still hasn’t told us what his A1C is. That’s the key.

by Anonymousreply 12October 23, 2023 11:22 PM

My A1C was 10 something, then 4 something when checked most recently after having metaformin and ozempic. The doctor was worried that I now have hypoglycaemia.

by Anonymousreply 13October 23, 2023 11:26 PM

OP if your A1C is in the 4 range your diabetes is in remission.

by Anonymousreply 14October 23, 2023 11:29 PM

OP did you suffer horrible side effects from using Ozempic?

by Anonymousreply 15October 23, 2023 11:32 PM

No, I have had no negative side effects with Ozempic at all.

by Anonymousreply 16October 23, 2023 11:36 PM

I was type 2. I saw was because as r14 has posted, thanks to Ozempic my A1C is 4.6. It was in the 7s. I eat normally now. By normal I mean I eat carbs. I have ice cream occasionally, I have bread. Before I was a keto nut and my A1c was still high. Pins and needles. You could have residual nerve damage from your Type 2. I had numbness in my thigh. I started taking Alpha-linolenic acid and a few weeks later it was gone. You can repair the never damage to an extent. It helps with the pins and needles too.

I've been a type-2 diabetic for fifteen years now. I stopped eating starches, sweets and fried foods. I also stopped eating fast food. I told my doctor I was not giving up my daily Starbucks mocha, no matter what, and I haven't.

I lost about 50 pounds in the first year. I take Metformin and Jardiance daily. I have gotten used to my diabetic diet. I don't miss french fries and ice cream, like I thought I would. My blood is drawn every three months and my levels have been below the threshold of "diabetic" for several years now. It doesn't mean I can add things I shouldn't to my diet. It's more of a reward knowing I'm keeping it under control.

Speaking of those blood draws, I used to pass out when any amount of blood was removed from my body. When my fraternity went to blood drives, my brothers took bets on how long I could sit upright. Once, I heard a "Yes!!!!" when I went prone. He won the money in the pool. He bought me a beer afterward.

I now look directly at the syringe sucking blood out of me and curse it. You're not going to get to me! It works.

Yes! Cake!

R17. How do you take alpha linolic acid? Does it come as a pill, OTC like a vitamin? Or do you need a prescription?

by Anonymousreply 22October 24, 2023 7:53 AM

Please look up Neuropathy , the symptoms of pins and needles, sharp arm pain are the very thing my husband has too. I’d also recommend drinking less as alcohol brings those pains on dramatically. Hope this helps you.

You're old. Things break. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 24October 24, 2023 1:44 PM

OP, do you not have an endocrinologist?

Your health care professional should have you enrolled in a diabetes education program or a support group. And some of these questions are better directed at an online group of Type 2 diabetic patients.

by Anonymousreply 25October 24, 2023 2:08 PM

r22 it is OTC at any vitamin store or I get my from Amazon. I will warn you it smells as a vitamin. Like beef is the best smell I can describe but fuck if it doesn't work.

by Anonymousreply 26October 24, 2023 3:11 PM

R26 Did a doctor recommend alpha linoletic to you? How did you hear of it?

by Anonymousreply 27October 24, 2023 3:19 PM

r27 I did some research on nerve damage and how to reverse it and found some studies on ALA. I figured why not try it and it works.
