Frankly, he's probably less than "special" when people expect some royal bearing or civility and all they get is some mumbling paunchy dude who rambles on about ecology, drinks too much, farts, and gets on a private plane to his next bloviation location for another photo op doing absolutely nothing useful. As an American who lived in Southern California for three years and loved it, the thought of him permanently moving from London to Montecito is still unimaginable: All new friends, completely different architecture and geography (I do think this affects one psychologically, at least at first), no seasons, no family, and all new culture: while Montecito is lovely, it’s not London. It doesn’t have the London nightlife, diversity, or excitement. No British Museum, no Albert Hall, no Wembley, no Tate Modern. No hustle and bustle. No double deckers. I’m sure the anger and the kids and the newness and the book and documentary were fun diversions at first but his entire life - socially, emotionally, psychologically, mentally - are wrapped up in London and have been since before he was born, for good or bad.

Why they didn’t land in LA or SF is beyond me.

He’s homesick. He’s publicly burned his bridges and he can’t even go back for a visit without some big drama.

I’m sure he loves the weather and being near the ocean but sometimes you just want familiar things.
