Didn't Suzanne Sommers have odd health practices

There are so many threads this may have been discussed but wasn't she into alternative medicine and took just tons of supplements?

I just remember her saying something like it's a risk but she'll find out in the end.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

by Anonymousreply 58October 21, 2023 12:29 AM

Bioidentical compounded hormone supplements for menopausal women.

My very good childhood friend Elaine had breast Cancer in the 2000s - she had previously had another kind in the 1990s - refused to get chemo. In the 90s V she got through with a lumpectomy and chemo. In the 2000s she had a bad case that spread quickly. She STILl fought getting chemo. Suzanne Somers had breast cancer at the time. As I recall SHE refused regular treatment and went the herbal route and visited some doctor in Germany. I remember that Elaine always used Suzanne as the reason she didn’t have to get chemo. Elaine also tried to find that German doctor. She wound up panicking and had chemo, radiation, a double mastectomy the works - it was grueling . I always think of Debra Winger in Terms of Endearment when I think of Elaine. She died about 12 years ago at 42. I always wondered if she hadn’t waited so long for real treatment she might have lived longer. But yeah - I remember Suzanne on Larry King and stuff talking about her alternative treatment for her breast cancer. I wonder whatever happened to the German Doctor.

by Anonymousreply 2October 18, 2023 5:34 AM

There probably was no German doctor. Sommers was not an honest person.

by Anonymousreply 3October 18, 2023 6:31 AM

I know when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 she did radiation and a mistletoe extract called iscador. I saw her on Oprah and she took a ton of different vitamin supplements throughout the day.

by Anonymousreply 4October 18, 2023 6:36 AM

Somers lied about everything. The way the press has used her death to reinvent her as some feminist icon who stood up for equal pay is bullshit. She was a cunt who thought she was a bigger star than she was, and she turned into a Trumper. Fuck her in Hell where she belongs.

by Anonymousreply 5October 18, 2023 7:01 AM

She did her "own research" before it was cool.

by Anonymousreply 6October 18, 2023 8:45 AM

She liked to flirt with Larry king. Her husband is attractive when he smiles

by Anonymousreply 7October 18, 2023 8:57 AM

R4 Mistletoe! Yes - now I remember - iscador! I remember he talking about that!! The other thing I remember his the hormone compounding - still taking hormones when usually Doctors worry that that the hormones would feed the cancer.

by Anonymousreply 8October 18, 2023 9:12 AM

Her^ talking not he talking

by Anonymousreply 9October 18, 2023 9:13 AM

At one point, she presided over a whole cottage industry of hormone supplements…she was also another female senior citizen who never stopped bragging (lying) about her amazing sex life. I guess it was a good tie-in with her self care books.

by Anonymousreply 10October 18, 2023 9:20 AM

German herbal treatments are the best!

by Anonymousreply 11October 18, 2023 9:23 AM

Celebrities who go public with their reliance on or, worse yet, shill alternative treatments, are leading others to their death. Fine to discuss your whole-foods plant diet as an adjunct to medically sound treatment, but stop there. Even advocating heavy vitamin use is questionable.

That said, people need to use their critical thinking skills and punch the Block key on the dummies and crazies of the world.

by Anonymousreply 12October 18, 2023 10:07 AM

She was taking a regimen of 60+ supplements per day.

by Anonymousreply 13October 18, 2023 10:29 AM

She did the initial treatment with lumpectomy and radiation. I don't know that she was ever upfront about the type of breast cancer that she had, but chemotherapy may have been +/- in those days. She also never talked about tamoxifen, but it would have been counter to her stance on bioidentical hormones for herself.

In the end, she had over 20 cancer free years.

by Anonymousreply 14October 18, 2023 10:54 AM

I think that the "German Doctor" may have been at the clinic Farrah (as R11 hinted) and Dominick Dunne went to, and we know how that turned out. But hey, you get desperate, and if you have the money you're going to try anything. She was such an unreliable narrator though, so who knows what she did vs. what she shilled.

Alan does look pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 15October 18, 2023 11:42 AM

I won't take wild supplements, etc. but I also won't go through chemo if (when) I get cancer. I saw what it did to my mother, and it was so grueling - no clue why anyone would think that's worth it. I'd rather just end it.

by Anonymousreply 16October 18, 2023 11:50 AM

R5- It was totally her dick of a husband who pushed for her huge salary increase on Three’s Company in 1980. They ended up outsmarting themselves when she was fired from the show.

by Anonymousreply 17October 18, 2023 11:58 AM

Dying is a very odd health practice.

by Anonymousreply 18October 18, 2023 12:02 PM

I’m with R16. Chemo/radiation doesn’t always work and has awful side effects. Natural cures sometimes work, sometimes don’t. I’ve watched more than a few go through cancer. They all died too soon

by Anonymousreply 19October 18, 2023 12:11 PM

You do it when the data says it can save your life or affectless treat the cancer- not just extend life by a few weeks or months. There are quite a few cancer diagnoses where it does just that. Often it is used in combination with immunotherapy and radiation and now targeted treatment based on genetic fingerprint of the pathology.

I don’t know what kind of breast cancer she had. I do know that Steve Jobs had a rare type of pancreatic cancer caught at an early stage that was curable. He reject the medical oncologists, treated with supplements and”diet”, it spread, and he died- needlessly. At the end he opted for treatment but it was too late. Hubris killed Steve Jobs in my opinion. Awful.

I know of several other examples of the same that I have seen in my career.

by Anonymousreply 20October 18, 2023 12:18 PM

Suzanne was smart enough to stay away from a "#1 Cancer Hospital" where they chemo and radiate you to death.

by Anonymousreply 21October 18, 2023 12:19 PM

I'm not going to shit on anyone who says "Oh, chemo is terrible. If I get cancer, I'll just die instead." You won't. You'll take whatever is available to make you better and extend your life. And there's no shame in that reversal. You think you can't handle it, but you can. And you will. We're much stronger and resilient than we think we are.

by Anonymousreply 22October 18, 2023 3:25 PM

Sad what cancer does.

by Anonymousreply 23October 18, 2023 3:52 PM

[quote]She was taking a regimen of 60+ supplements per day.

But that's not all she swallowed!

by Anonymousreply 24October 18, 2023 3:55 PM

Everyone knew Sommers was dumb when she got on Beverly's bad side.

by Anonymousreply 25October 18, 2023 3:55 PM

Her name was SOMERS, not Sommers.

by Anonymousreply 26October 18, 2023 3:58 PM

[QUOTE] Mistletoe! Yes - now I remember - iscador!

For some reason, I remember a pine cone extract.

by Anonymousreply 27October 18, 2023 4:22 PM

[quote]Natural cures sometimes work, sometimes don’t.

They never work.

by Anonymousreply 28October 18, 2023 5:06 PM

I think Angelina Jolie is a complete wackjob, but as far as breast cancer goes… she did the smartest thing by knowing she was at high risk, getting genetically tested, and having prophylactic surgery. Her risk of ever getting this cancer is near-zero.

by Anonymousreply 29October 18, 2023 5:10 PM

SS was a liar and cheap con artist, selling overpriced junk to rubes, much like Mike Lindell or Donald Trump. She was most likely lying/BSing about all of her natural cancer cures. But I do think she was on HGH--she had that enlarged cavewoman look in her later years like Large Marge.

by Anonymousreply 30October 18, 2023 5:18 PM

Didn't they kick her off of QVC, so she went to HSN, also got kicked off, and then migrated to some third-tier lower-level shopping channel?

by Anonymousreply 31October 18, 2023 5:37 PM

All of the people I've meet who are super dosing on supplements look like dumpster fires & have every ailment known to science. (Cancer, Lymes, Babesia, Morgellons, hypercholesterolemia...). They never get better or look better & are always talking about some new, miraculous supplement they're on, everyone else needs to be on that Big Pharma is trying to block/hide/keep from getting made.

by Anonymousreply 32October 18, 2023 5:52 PM

I’m reinvented!

by Anonymousreply 33October 18, 2023 5:59 PM

she was 77, that is a long life, none of the alt medicines shortened her life.

by Anonymousreply 34October 18, 2023 6:03 PM

Are her ponchos collector's items now?

by Anonymousreply 35October 18, 2023 6:06 PM

She was a Republican Rocket Scientist/Brain Surgeon. Believed in hocus pocus treatments and look at her now.

by Anonymousreply 36October 18, 2023 6:14 PM

In a phase 1 trial of mistletoe extract for patients with cancer, researchers at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center found the therapy to not only be safe but also potentially beneficial to quality of life. This is the first major US study on mistletoe. Mistletoe is given to nearly 2/3 of cancer patients in Germany and Switzerland.

by Anonymousreply 37October 18, 2023 6:48 PM

Friend diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, went to prominent cancer hospital. Chemo and radiation was their protocol. He was always nauseous. Later went to an MD who practices Radiosurgery, laser-like beams directly into site of cancer. He 's been cancer-free for four years.

by Anonymousreply 38October 18, 2023 7:20 PM

R28 Kind of like radiation/chemo

by Anonymousreply 39October 18, 2023 9:04 PM

R27 Iscador® preparations are fermented aqueous extracts of mistletoe plants from the host trees apple (M = mali), pine (P = pini), oak (Qu = quercus) and elm (U = ulmi) and in Switzerland also from fir (A = abietis).

by Anonymousreply 40October 18, 2023 9:37 PM

Maybe. I did tell her to eat shit and die.

by Anonymousreply 41October 18, 2023 10:02 PM

Oh, I misunderstood, I thought she said the CAMELTOE treatment, which is why I've been standing in a pair of slacks two sizes too small in the fountain at the Bellagio...

by Anonymousreply 42October 18, 2023 10:35 PM

R42 You tried

by Anonymousreply 43October 19, 2023 1:07 AM

So did you, R43

by Anonymousreply 44October 19, 2023 7:16 AM

As my father pointed out when I was a kid and didn't know any better, Joyce DeWitt was much prettier. That damned peroxide bleach fools people. Loni Anderson was another plain Jane but then there was the hair - and the chest.

by Anonymousreply 45October 19, 2023 7:23 AM

I thought loni was pretty when she was young and brunette. She was 1st runner up to Miss Minnesota in 1964 and ended up marrying the winner of the pageants brother.

A few years ago, she said she was expecting to live to be 100 or even 125 years old with her health regimen!

by Anonymousreply 47October 19, 2023 7:46 AM

The producer of Three’s Company laid out what Suzanne says to get fired. It’s on YouTube. Then you listen to Suzanne and it was all about the patriarchy. It wasn’t. She really was a liar.

One must remember this was the era of T&A/Jiggle Television.

by Anonymousreply 51October 19, 2023 3:01 PM

I wonder why she was a Trump supporter? Taxes? She said that she thought he was doing a good job. A good job what exactly?

by Anonymousreply 52October 19, 2023 4:07 PM

Probably a side effect from the cancer, R52.

by Anonymousreply 53October 19, 2023 4:25 PM

I remember when Patrick Swayze died, she said she could have saved him with her regimen. I remember it being a very odd statement, especially since his death had just been announced and it seemed like she was grabbing a bit of the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 54October 19, 2023 4:29 PM

She was always right wing. I remembered during TC she did an interview where she said she hated Jane Fonda for always putting the USA down.

by Anonymousreply 55October 19, 2023 6:28 PM

What a bunch of idiocy, R50. She had a lumpectomy, nothing more or less. For all the blather, she had a fat transfer to fill in whatever scar there was.

by Anonymousreply 56October 20, 2023 7:44 PM

That was pretty fucking bad: Rehearsing all week for a show then pulling out on the last day and not letting a doctor examine her so the show could claim on insurance. She and her husband must have been excessively stupid and arrogant to think that's how you get further in any business.

by Anonymousreply 57October 20, 2023 10:56 PM

R21- Sloan Kettering in New York City is a PERFECT example of that type of hospital.
