Those fucking shoplifrters are what done it.
Sounds like it's actually the opioid lawsuits what done it, OP.

This is at least its third go round with bankruptcy or near bankruptcy.
When Walgreens called off their merger it really fucked them.

The one in my neighborhood doesn’t lock up the toiletries like CVS/Target does. Their electronics, yes, but that’s it.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 16, 2023 1:05 PM |
Not a surprise. Poorly managed for a decade and now dept in the billions. Stolen Maybelline lipsticks had very little to do with it. I hope they survive. I rather shop at Rite Aid than CVS.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 16, 2023 1:10 PM |
There used to be a Rite Aid right across the street from me. In a pinch, I could walk there for milk or iced tea, but I would never purchase anything else or get prescriptions filled there. Prices were too high (compared to CVS and Walgreens), and the shelves were always half empty. In addition, there were hardly any customers. The store closed last month.
As previous posters have said, Rite Aid has been in financial difficulties since the late 1990s.
Other posters haven't said it, but I will: OP is a raci$t piece of $hit.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 16, 2023 2:24 PM |
Rite Aid is not DEAD. Bankruptcy just means they're going to reorganize and get out from under their debts.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 16, 2023 3:21 PM |
OMG these opiod lawsuits are such bullshit. The only guilty people are the doctors and drug companies. Rite Aid sells lots of candy, should they be sued by diabetics?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 16, 2023 3:24 PM |
I'm not sure if it's just here in CA but the drugstore / pharmacy market seems really oversaturated. There are drugstores practically every 2-3 blocks in parts of LA county. Now, when I go to downtown Austin or Portland or Seattle or Tacoma you can't find a drugstore to save your life. But here in CA we are hogging them all it seems. Not sure why.
That being said, I prefer the shopping experience at Rite Aid more than the other 2. CVS is ridiculously overpriced and Walgreens can get kind of junky in certain areas. Plus, Walgreens doesn't care liquor, only beer and wine. Walgreens seems cheaper here than CVS or Rite Aid- it shows, however.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 16, 2023 3:32 PM |
R14, Rite Aid is not being sued for filling prescriptions and selling lots of opioids. They are being sued because Rite Aid - allegedly - knew that those prescriptions were bogus. That would make them an accessory , not just others' tool.
[quote] “We allege that Rite Aid filled hundreds of thousands of prescriptions that did not meet legal requirements,” said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta. “According to our complaint, Rite Aid’s pharmacists repeatedly filled prescriptions for controlled substances with obvious red flags, and Rite Aid intentionally deleted internal notes about suspicious prescribers. These practices opened the floodgates for millions of opioid pills and other controlled substances to flow illegally out of Rite Aid’s stores.”

by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 16, 2023 6:13 PM |
Houston is oversaturated with CVS and Walgreen's. I avoid CVS because it's even more insanely overpriced than Walgreen's, unless you can work some coupon deal. And I hate the layout, though I have finally figured them out, I think. I don't know if Rite-Aid ever tried to enter this market.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 16, 2023 6:37 PM |
CVS says they want to close 300 stores every year for the next 3 years. Rite Aid will be closing 400-500 of its current 2,100. And Walgreens wants to close 150 stores.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 16, 2023 6:51 PM |
I do like the pharmacy at my Target/CVS. The staff are very helpful and friendly.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 16, 2023 6:57 PM |
Thrifty Ice Cream might save Rite-Aid.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 16, 2023 7:15 PM |
All of these stores (RiteAid, Walgreens, CVS) are terrible. They're basically 7-11s that sell drugs. Does that sound like the kind of customer base you'd want?
It's ridiculous that a pharmacy would sell cigarettes and liquor.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 16, 2023 7:30 PM |
All the Rite Aids in Philly have everything behind glasses due to non-stop shoplifting. It’s like a prison cafeteria. Very depressing. They’re not the only store having to do this either.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 16, 2023 9:06 PM |
The rite aids in my town are half empty, filthy and understaffed. We don't have the looting issues that other states have but Rite Aid seems to be a mess regardless.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 16, 2023 9:12 PM |
R24 The employees weren't either. I should know. I worked at one for a time right out of high school. I'd probably drink heavily if I ever had to return.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 16, 2023 9:32 PM |
I would argue that r8 is the only racist in this thread since he assumed all shoplifters are black. As someone who once worked in loss prevention, I can assure you that the majority of shoplifters are elderly Caucasian women.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 16, 2023 11:31 PM |
It's not shoplifters, you asshole.
They are merely evading creditors by declaring bankruptcy.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 17, 2023 12:03 AM |
It's the same in Northern California pretty much, r15. I used to live in Chicago and was shocked by how junky the Walgreens are here, in nice areas. Rite Aid prices are better and customer service is better. They'll bring in another clerk if a line forms or someone gets ice cream unlike CVS whose lone cashier may have 6 or 7 in line. The pharmacy experience is much better at CVS, though, with short lines and waits. Total opposite at Rite Aid. Strange how they're flipped on these.
The Rite Aid seems to have problems stocking though. Very sparse back-to- school season and lots of empty shelves and the Halloween candy arrived later than usual. I don't know if it's pandemic after effects or reflects their financial condition.

R28 are these women on fixed incomes?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 17, 2023 12:27 AM |
Rite aide everywhere has looked shitty for awhile. Every one I've been to at least. They look dated by 30 years and don't have drive thru for the pharmacy. They always seem to be tucked away in awkward plazas as well. Every time I've tried calling them though to fill scripts during shortages, nope, never once have they had it either. I'm surprised they even still exist.

You can get prescriptions online now through Amazon and Walmart, delivered to your door. Not to mention Bandaids and Herbal Essence shampoo and greeting cards etc. Rite Aid has been hemorrhaging market share to those major retailers, as have CVS and Walgreens.
Shoplifting is extremely small potatoes for all of these companies, and OPs implication is loud and clear about who he thinks is to blame (i.e. non-white city dwellers). That is, after all, who Newsmax tells us is responsible for all shoplifting.

Many large health insurers in the USA also offer cheaper prices through their own pharmacies and free 3-5 day delivery by mail.

In Seattle, Rite Aid purchased Bartell’s and then closed half of the stores. They are pealing off real estate at the worst time. They will fail or get a bail out.

I have no clue if the women who shoplift were on fixed incomes, r38. I know that the majority of them committed felonies by pulling out bags from their purses and stealing the shit. I sent a good many of them off with the police. They were sneaky bitches thinking no one was going to catch them. This was in the late 80's early 90's.

R41 I completely believe it. I live in an area with an over 95% Caucasian population. I saw an old man get escorted out of my grocery store by store security and struck up a conversation with a worker there while we all stood around staring at the scene.
I was shocked an old person would shoplift and the worker told me the majority of store thieves were old women and men. He said they loved to play "old and confused" when they got caught.
