"People ask me about my love affairs. I’ve loved many men, but I’ve never been in love. I’ve had no time for romance. I’ve always been working. Besides, my idea of heaven was to be with my mother and my sister. We always slept together—with me in the middle because I had nightmares that trees were chasing me. Dorothy got married, but she never lived with her husband. She said men and women just weren’t meant to live together. I’m so glad I didn’t ruin a man’s life by marrying him."
-Lilian Gish, People Magazine 1987
Dorothy Gish was married to James Rennie for 15 years and they never lived together. Lilian never married and died a spinster at age 99. Turns out their father was an alcoholic who abandoned the girls and their mother when they were little, and ended up in a home for the insane in Oklahoma. What's interesting is that Lilian thought if she married a man she would ruin his life. I wonder if that's what her father said to her mother? It's amazing that both Gish daughters ended up successful. Lilian continued to act her whole life.
