I watched Soapdish again last night

I forgot Whoopi actually had legs at one point and how deliciously it skewered ridiculous soaps. Sally melting down about the turban was funny.

by Anonymousreply 61November 17, 2023 4:19 PM

I guess there's always room on DL for yet another thread about this classic film. Yes, the set pieces like Sally's in-studio meltdown or the turban bit are funny. But the film's real genius is how great bits/lines were just thrown away in scenes that were focused elsewhere -giving viewers more to discover on future viewings.

"I can't act in a swimsuit."

"They always loved me in Canada!"

"Of course I'm full of shit, but not about that."

"I hope you're wearing underwear. Dare I ask?"

"And that allows us to explore a contemporary theme, which is actually very close to Miss Talbert's heart: today's woman as she gets dried up, old, and sexually undesirable."

Whoopi and Sally were terrific but script doctor Carrie Fisher gave them good material to work with.

by Anonymousreply 2October 11, 2023 5:08 PM

Loved Carrie pulling her panties back on as the guy auditioning leaves.

by Anonymousreply 3October 11, 2023 5:11 PM

I love when Sally is the closet and face plants on the ottoman when she hears her lover has left. I laugh every time.

KOPFGESCHLAGEN

by Anonymousreply 5October 11, 2023 5:23 PM

This scene got roars but would it play today? Wouldn't be that much of a shock anymore. Seeing it on Long Island maybe made it even funnier.

R10 her playing a doctor really represents how absurd tv is in really is.

by Anonymousreply 12October 11, 2023 5:53 PM

R12 "I'm Dr. Monica DeMonaco, the neurosurgeon assigned to this case."

Is it me or is RDJ's character played as gay?

"Bitch!"

He did tell Montana that he was normally attracted to waifish types R15.

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2023 10:10 PM

R18 he was sort of a waif himself.

by Anonymousreply 19October 11, 2023 10:23 PM

What am I, 70, David? Am I 70? Why don't you just put me in a walker? Buy a goddamn walker and put me in it!

by Anonymousreply 20October 11, 2023 10:35 PM

Teri Hatcher was gorgeous in the 90s. She got too skinny on Lois and Clark and that took a toll on her.

by Anonymousreply 21October 11, 2023 10:43 PM

Yeah she looked haggard too thin.

by Anonymousreply 22October 11, 2023 10:55 PM

Soap Dish is right up there with The Princess Bride when it comes to quotable lines.

Attention! Attention, DL! NO turbans for R20!

by Anonymousreply 25October 12, 2023 1:14 AM

Whoopi Goldberg was great in this. Her character was the only sane person surrounded by nutcases.

by Anonymousreply 26October 12, 2023 1:19 AM

She named her twins Venus and Saturn, r26. That doesn't seem sane to me.

by Anonymousreply 27October 12, 2023 1:25 AM

How could someone be sane when they stare at crawdad butts??

I've always wondered about Montana/Milton. Was there bottom surgery? It's implied near the end, but the final bit about Milton Moorehead in Death of a Salesman always confuses me. Yes, her sex change was aired on TV -but would that make her change her identify back? Those were clearly simpler times...

by Anonymousreply 44October 12, 2023 2:19 PM

It was ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ป๐˜ป๐˜บ so I infer Milton stopped at the boobs.

Ariel Maloney : Ooh, they're nothing compared to my tits.

I want a sequel where Milton Moorehead rises from "Death of a Salesman" to take his/her/their revenge

by Anonymousreply 51October 13, 2023 3:17 AM

R44 I always took this as a riff on the old rumor that Eileen Davidson was trans. It was a hysterical comic moment in a spoof film about a soap opera.

by Anonymousreply 52October 13, 2023 4:21 AM

The clues were there about Milton since the beginning. They have a Judy Garland/Wizard of Oz flyer on her dressing rooms mirror!

by Anonymousreply 53November 5, 2023 3:38 PM

I always love the scene where Celeste is feeling down, so she and Whoopi go to the mall and the women all mob her and tell her how much they love her.

It's something I can easily see Susan Lucci doing after a bad day.

by Anonymousreply 54November 5, 2023 3:57 PM

No love for Celeste's husband Bolt?

In comparison with Tootsie, I always found this mean-spirited and cartoonish. It doesn't make sense that Montana could fake a pregnancy, for one.

Great cast, though.

"Mister Fuzzy" was the giveaway

by Anonymousreply 57November 5, 2023 10:07 PM

Correct, r57, Montana misgendered Fuzzy. But I don't think genders existed in 1991.
