I watched Soapdish again last night

I guess there's always room on DL for yet another thread about this classic film. Yes, the set pieces like Sally's in-studio meltdown or the turban bit are funny. But the film's real genius is how great bits/lines were just thrown away in scenes that were focused elsewhere -giving viewers more to discover on future viewings.

"I can't act in a swimsuit."

"They always loved me in Canada!"

"Of course I'm full of shit, but not about that."

"I hope you're wearing underwear. Dare I ask?"

"And that allows us to explore a contemporary theme, which is actually very close to Miss Talbert's heart: today's woman as she gets dried up, old, and sexually undesirable."

Whoopi and Sally were terrific but script doctor Carrie Fisher gave them good material to work with.

Loved Carrie pulling her panties back on as the guy auditioning leaves.

I love when Sally is the closet and face plants on the ottoman when she hears her lover has left. I laugh every time.

This scene got roars but would it play today? Wouldn't be that much of a shock anymore. Seeing it on Long Island maybe made it even funnier.

Whoopi Goldberg was great in this. Her character was the only sane person surrounded by nutcases.

She named her twins Venus and Saturn, r26. That doesn't seem sane to me.

How could someone be sane when they stare at crawdad butts??

I've always wondered about Montana/Milton. Was there bottom surgery? It's implied near the end, but the final bit about Milton Moorehead in Death of a Salesman always confuses me. Yes, her sex change was aired on TV -but would that make her change her identify back? Those were clearly simpler times...

R44 I always took this as a riff on the old rumor that Eileen Davidson was trans. It was a hysterical comic moment in a spoof film about a soap opera.

The clues were there about Milton since the beginning. They have a Judy Garland/Wizard of Oz flyer on her dressing rooms mirror!

I always love the scene where Celeste is feeling down, so she and Whoopi go to the mall and the women all mob her and tell her how much they love her.

It's something I can easily see Susan Lucci doing after a bad day.

No love for Celeste's husband Bolt?

In comparison with Tootsie, I always found this mean-spirited and cartoonish. It doesn't make sense that Montana could fake a pregnancy, for one.

Great cast, though.
