What haircare products do you use?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | November 16, 2023 7:12 PM |
I have to keep changing, because they keep changing the product formulas. Though I've heard that one has to change it up because hair gets used to what you use?
I used and swore by Bumble & Bumble products. As an example, B&B's leave-in conditioner - about 10 years ago, they changed SOMETHIING and the product totally changed. I can only suspect that like everything else these days, the formula was changed to save money.
My hair is dry so I don't use anything with alcohol in it - that I know of. I wash my hair only once or twice a week. And I'm using SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave In Conditioner For Damaged Hair.
Does anyone know what TV and Movie make-up departments us to get that perfect hold and sheen for 30's and 40s hairstyles?

OP
Try the SheaMoisture. Amazon has it. It isn't the greatest, but it's better than all the products I've spent probably hundreds of dollars to experiment with.
And then there's this - of course I could be nuts - but the SheaMoisture in the travel size container is much better than the SheaMoisture in the standard jar. Though I've asked others if they see a difference and they say yes.
Don't even get me started on how the water supply in different places/cities et al affects hair. I even tried rinsing my hair with distilled water, without a noticeable result. It really does depend on what chemicals are used in city water treatment facilities. Another way I thought I was nuts, but no, it was verified by articles on the internet.
I'm open to ether suggestions, but sometimes I think I've already tried everything out there. (I'm sure I haven't tried EVERYTHING available, but over the years it feels as if I have.). I've also had problems with products merely because the scent is either too strong for me, or to walk out the door.
I'm aware that these are first-world problems.

Now I remember instigating this long ago, so I checked again.
Cosmetics giant Estee Lauder added another name to its growing list of beauty companies – buying a majority stake in the exclusive Bumble and bumble salon and hair care products line to boost its hair business.
Aha! That was in 2000. I estimated the change was about 10 years ago, but now that I think of it, based on where I was living it was longer than 10 years. And prior to that I had been using a B&B Leave-in Conditioner in a gallon size container that I had scored years ago from a friend that owned a salon.
So the formula probably WAS changed when Estee Lauder bought the company.

^^^ Investigating NOT instigating. Damn auto spell.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 10, 2023 2:06 PM |
Always read the ingredients. I found a conditioner that I loved but it was a small tube that was used after hair coloring and only available at beauty supply places (none near me). I googled other products by that company and found a near identical one for sale retail under a different name by comparing the ingredients.
Also you might check Reddit, they for sure have one devoted to hair products. Another thing, I always take a photo of the ingredients list on labels and run it by an ingredient checker. Beautipedia is one, INCIdecoder is another. It’s not foolproof but you learn which ones are good or excellent. (Fragrance is always labeled “worst” because it can be an irritant). Beauty forums are always asking about “dupes” for discontinued products.

Head & Shoulders 2 in 1. My hair stylist recommends using a clarifying shampoo and conditioning mask every 10 - 14 days. I use Kevin Murphy products for that.
No mousse, gel or hairspray. I have great hair, hope it continues to stay that way.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 10, 2023 2:28 PM |
I use PRELL; it is still available; it and Head and Shoulders once had an 85% share of the shampoo market in the US. Talk about a marketing triumph.

I personally use whatever has the least or no fragrance.
Sounds like you need a clarifying shampoo to remove build up.
I overheard a hairstylist telling a client that Pantene is notorious for leaving a lot of building up. Stylist couldn't get comb through woman's wet hair and asked her what products she used and client said only Pantene for years. Could have just been a ploy to sell product but stylist did bring client back to the sink for a second round of washing to untangle her mess.

Are you using a clarifying and/or chelating shampoo? You might want to add into your regimen to remove buildup and hard water - the likely culprit of the greasy to dehydrated feeling you are experiencing. Kinky Curly Come Clean, Olaplex 4c, K18 Detox Shampoo and Ouai Detox are great options.

Someone told me to use Dawn dish soap to really get all the build up out.

R24 - are you an oily penguin?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 10, 2023 4:02 PM |
DO NOT use dawn dish soap; it is widely known in the car detailing industry for stripping all the wax and ceramic coating off vehicles. Do you really want to use something that substantial on your hair or scalp? Not to mention your face as you rinse it off.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 10, 2023 4:20 PM |
I use just a dab of Alberto VO 5 every morning after my hair dries from showering. No alcohol which is in so many hair care products. I have naturally dry hair and it does give it a little gloss and body. I've been using it for decades.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 10, 2023 4:24 PM |
Just how old are you people? VO 5? Really? Is it even still made?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 10, 2023 4:31 PM |
Press, but only on the weekends, otherwise Pert Plus... Or mom's Herbal Essence, but only if I'm out.

That's disappointing that Head & Shoulders still tests on animals. The product has been around for decades, why do they need to keep testing it?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 10, 2023 6:22 PM |
I use Paul Mitchell volumizing shampoo for summer/warm weather (or Awapuhi, when it's dry/cold) - I use either Paul Mitchell The Conditioner (leave in) or Paul Mitchell The Detangler.
Sometimes I get Nexxus Keraphix shampoo instead. I also use a silicon smoother on my wavy hair called Silk Scarf. That's it. Occasionally I will change the leave in for Aveda Damage Therapy.
I color my hair and I have to clarify it before, so I'll use Suave Daily Clarifying for that, or when my hair is really dirty.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 10, 2023 6:24 PM |
I use Alberto V05, too. I only have a little bit left and haven't been able to find it anywhere lately.

Olaplex shampoo, conditioner, and Number 6 bond smoother. This is what my hair stylist uses, and I've been using these for three years and my hair looks healthy and great. They are pricy, but they all go on sale on Amazon Prime Day, so stock up.

What is a silicon smoother @R35?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 10, 2023 9:18 PM |
Aveda Pure-Formance: shampoo, conditioner, styling cream.
It's not inexpensive, but it works well, leaves my hair looking lustrous and clean, and has a mild bergamot scent that I love and many people comment upon favorably.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 10, 2023 9:52 PM |
R44 Silicone is used in a lot of hair serums, smoothers, and conditioners. It makes the hair softer, less frizzy, and shiny but it can cause buildup. If you have hair that tends to frizz, using these products can be a godsend. Sebastian Laminates drops is an example, so is John Frieda Frizz-Ease serum, The Silk Scarf hair hologram hair serum I use, etc.

OP, could be your hair is changing as you get older. Hair can get coarser and drier as we age. I had to use products for oily hair when I was younger, and now use moisturizing ones. I like lighter ones like Paul Mitchell Awapuhi or Shampoo One. I also like AG Balance with apple cider vinegar. AG has an apple cider leave in conditioning spray that you can also use on your skin.

Mielle for edge control and Kinky-Curly for everything else.
I'm confident this is definitely helpful for you and your hair type. 100%.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 11, 2023 1:38 PM |
To be fair r60, the Kinky-Curly shampoo and leave-in are great products for a variety of hair textures. For instance my flaxen, straight-haired sister-in-law became a loyal customer after using both while visiting me (highlighted, kinky/coily strands).
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 11, 2023 1:48 PM |
r61 I know. I was more or less being tongue-in-cheek due to the fact that I have multi-textured hair (3C-4B) and as a result, it was a bitch to find the best products that worked. People would always tell me "what worked for them" with confidence and I'd try it and due to having all of these damn textures, it wouldn't look right. Eventually, I stopped asking what other people used.
One person even recommended a conditioner that also had Brazilian keratin in it when I specifically stated I wanted to enhance my natural [bold]curls.[/bold] I'm sure you can figure out how the 3C section of my head fared in that regard. I eventually just cut all of it off and said fuck it, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 11, 2023 1:55 PM |
Ahhh, understood r62. As a solid 4, I feel you. I’ve thought about cutting it all off, but I stay committed to product-junkyism, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 11, 2023 2:36 PM |
product-junkyism, lol
Careful with that, r63. One can easily go damn-near bankrupt trying with some of these products. Especially with a curly hair routine. I learned very quickly if you're going to go the product route, just stick to one brand and alternate product type. YouTube on autoplay watching nearly every "hairfluencer" show what they use can get out of hand once you see their results.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 11, 2023 3:35 PM |
They haven't changed VO 5 in at least 50 years so I doubt they've been testing it on any animals. Or humans for that matter.

Miriam Quevedo if you are feeling flashy.
I agree with poster above! The two shampoos in my shower are Kiehls Amino Acid (god I love that coconut smell!) And this pricey Miriam Quevedo shampoo/ and conditioner.

Anyone know of a shampoo that has no built-in conditioner?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 15, 2023 10:36 PM |
R77 don’t buy 2 in 1 formulas. Look for shampoos that use verbiage like Hydrating, moisturizing, strengthening, smoothing. Avoid shampoos that have an opaque and creamy consistency. Maybe try something like Suave daily clarifying shampoo?
R76 I used Nexxus Therappe when I was a kid (it was my mom’s shampoo of choice too). I’m now creeping towards 50 and still using it and Humectress to condition.
