Israel Under Attack From Land And Air - State Of War Declared.

Well, this won't end well, for any human.

Israeli Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai announced in a statement that "We're in a state of war. We are under a massive attack from the Gaza Strip. There are currently 21 active high confrontation locations in southern Israel. The Yamam counterterrorism unite is at the scene… The entire southern region is closed [for civilian movement]."

I'm sorry to say it but the fault of this lands at the feet of many years of Israeli leaders, especially Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel has been stoking the anger of Palestinians for decades and now the Palestinians have had enough.

I’ve seen some horrific videos - home invasions, shooting civilians in the street, taking the corpses of women to use for sex, kidnapping women, western sympathy for Palestine is about to be severely depleted and the counterattack will likely be like nothing we’ve seen before - I have no idea where this is going to go, geopolitics is such a mess already w the Ukraine conflict and Taiwan tensions now this.

by Anonymousreply 25October 7, 2023 12:15 PM

No worries, Big Joe Biden can broker a peace deal.

by Anonymousreply 26October 7, 2023 12:16 PM

More than half of the Palestinian people in the world are stateless and this has been the case for 75 years.

Without a viable sovereign state in which Palestinians can be equal citizens, there will never be peace in the region. And for a viable sovereign state to even be possible, the West Bank settlements have to go.

This is a very basic and obvious truth which everyone knows but no Western government will acknowledge in plain terms. So instead we're going to get more slaughter, then another ceasefire and more can-kicking.

There's no way Israel didn't know this was coming.

"The attack comes at a time of historic division within Israel over Netanyahu’s proposal to overhaul the judiciary. Mass protests over the plan have sent hundreds thousands of Israeli demonstrators into the streets and prompted hundreds of military reservists to avoid volunteer duty — turmoil that has raised fears over the military’s battlefield readiness and raised concerns about its deterrence over its enemies.

It comes at a time of mounting tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. Over the past year Israel’s far-right government has ramped up settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, Israeli settler violence has displaced hundreds of Palestinians there, and tensions have flared around a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site.

by Anonymousreply 83October 7, 2023 3:09 PM

R80 Sorry, Israel lost all claims to the West Bank because it never had a legitimate claim to the West Bank.

The biggest change to Israel's frontiers came in 1967, when the conflict known as the Six Day War left Israel in occupation of the Sinai peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and most of the Syrian Golan Heights - effectively tripling the size of territory under Israel's control. Israel effectively annexed East Jerusalem - claiming the whole of the city as its capital - and the Golan Heights. These moves were not recognised by the international community, until the US changed its official position on the matter under the Trump administration, becoming the first major power to do so. Overwhelmingly, international opinion continues to consider East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights as occupied territory.

by Anonymousreply 84October 7, 2023 3:10 PM

How can you negotiate or rationalize with people who applaud putting bombs on the back of the mentally disabled? They're given BILLIONS every year from the international community. Yet, they don't build any infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, water treatment plants, etc?

by Anonymousreply 86October 7, 2023 3:19 PM

How can you negotiate with people who use remote-controlled drones to incinerate children and the elderly without even a warning?

Oh wait, that's you guys.

by Anonymousreply 87October 7, 2023 3:22 PM

R84, are you saying that Israel should have given up land that it captured in a war that it did not start? So if Ukraine took back Crimea in a war that the Russians started, should they give it back if the international community says so?

I feel a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians, but their collective inability to acknowledge and respect Israel’s right to exist by is why this continues to rage. These attacks on Israel lead to the oppression of Palestinians that is difficult to defend if the population was peaceful.

After today, peace of a Palestinian state is nearly impossible for centuries if ever. Which seems to be exactly what Hamas and Netanyahu want..

Preamble: "inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East in which every State in the area can live in security"

(i) Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict; (ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force."[4]

All that is required is for the world's governments to formally recognise the Palestinian Authority as the State of Palestine, on its 1967 borders, pending possible future negotiation, which would then be between two sovereign and equal states.

There is absolutely no reason to oppose this - unless of course you believe that Israel should exercise military control over the West Bank in perpetuity while all the time expanding its settler land grab.

by Anonymousreply 107October 7, 2023 4:26 PM

Settlers on the rampage 2023.

"We also see continued violations of international humanitarian law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including evictions and demolitions. On Friday 17 August, Israel demolished a West Bank Protection Consortium school in Ein Samiya. The continued demolition of Palestinian property and the evictions by Israeli authorities from their homes are contrary to international humanitarian law, it renders Palestinians at risk of forcible transfer, and causes unnecessary suffering to ordinary Palestinians. This is harmful to the peace process. Israel must also urgently provide a clear, transparent route to construction for Palestinians in Area C."

What's weird is that it sounds like Israel was asleep at the switch.

by Anonymousreply 123October 7, 2023 5:11 PM

They keep talking about this massive intelligence snafu on the part of the Israelis. What if Trump tipped off someone?

by Anonymousreply 124October 7, 2023 5:13 PM

What are the safest cities in Israel? Gaza always seemed to be in the news for tension. How did they get Israelis to live there?

by Anonymousreply 125October 7, 2023 5:17 PM

"What if Trump tipped off someone?"

Who? Hamas?

by Anonymousreply 126October 7, 2023 5:21 PM

is this serious?

I know they've had all kinds of wars in the past. How does this attack rank? in terms of scale?

by Anonymousreply 127October 7, 2023 5:22 PM

Unless the bad guys went low tech and used snail mail etc

Some diaspora Palestineans are Christians driven out by Muslim Arabs.

by Anonymousreply 129October 7, 2023 5:24 PM

R127, it was a complex, three-stage attack coming from multiple directions. To the general public, this is shocking, because it is so advanced.

There are unsourced Twitter rumors that the Israeli Army had been unable to get Netanyahu to focus on the probability of such an attack.

by Anonymousreply 130October 7, 2023 5:27 PM

[quote] Some diaspora Palestineans are Christians driven out by Muslim Arabs.

Oh fuck off. They were driven out by the Israeli occupation and you know it.

by Anonymousreply 131October 7, 2023 5:29 PM

There are plenty of Christian Palestinians still there.

Saudi Arabia funds Hamas so yeah Trump

by Anonymousreply 132October 7, 2023 5:32 PM

R105 is correct. Anyone sayng "Team Israel" because of its supposed great love of gays is not only unable to understand that homophobia or homophilia has absolutwly nothing to do with this.

This attack only benefits the criminal Netanyahu and his ultra-right-wing (and yes, homophobic) new government. This is another George Bush 9/11 moment for Bibi the crook.

by Anonymousreply 133October 7, 2023 5:38 PM

[quote] is this serious?

Hard to say, serious for whom? The last time Israel was this 'surprised' was in 1973 when Jordan attacked. They will probably kill a LOT of Palestinians before the dust settles, on the Palestinians.

On the other hand, the 'world' will do nothing except for some impotent complaining by the Arab states that Israel's response is disproportionate.

by Anonymousreply 134October 7, 2023 5:39 PM

War is often a great friend to struggling political leaders, historically seaking.

by Anonymousreply 136October 7, 2023 5:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 137October 7, 2023 5:43 PM

War and internal struggles are often seized upon by crooks like Bibi.

by Anonymousreply 138October 7, 2023 5:44 PM

So true. Wag the Dog.

by Anonymousreply 139October 7, 2023 5:44 PM

A lot of people have absorbed the ‘open air prison’ myth about Gaza and seeing the footage of Gazans filming each other killing defenceless children, the elderly, going door to door to murder people will make people think ‘maybe they need to be in prison’, which strengthens Hamas.

by Anonymousreply 140October 7, 2023 5:45 PM

Sadly, it's the Israelis who were fighting against Netanyahu's corrupt right-wing government who have the most to lose, after, of course, the Palestinians.

by Anonymousreply 141October 7, 2023 5:47 PM

R140 You forgot throwing babies out of incubators Bibi

by Anonymousreply 142October 7, 2023 5:52 PM

FUCK YOU ISRAEL!!!!

by Anonymousreply 143October 7, 2023 5:53 PM

MSNBC has been providing coverage that is more balanced and contextualized. People who actually live in Israel expressed great skepticism that this would benefit Netanyahu, which surprised Ali Velshi.

by Anonymousreply 144October 7, 2023 5:53 PM

[quote] People who actually live in Israel expressed great skepticism that this would benefit Netanyahu

I would love to believe this is true but historically, this is not the case that an attack within a country's borders does not strengthen the position of that country's leader in mobolizing power around him.

by Anonymousreply 145October 7, 2023 5:56 PM

President Biden to make a statement at 2:30 PM ET.

by Anonymousreply 146October 7, 2023 5:56 PM

How on earth was Hamas able to occupy THE ENTIRE TERRITORY OF GAZA plus some???

by Anonymousreply 147October 7, 2023 5:57 PM

[quote]People who actually live in Israel expressed great skepticism that this would benefit Netanyahu

Because Netanyahu sold his extreme policies as a way to keep Israelis safe. Obviously, he has failed miserably.

by Anonymousreply 148October 7, 2023 5:58 PM

Oppression causes dysfunction leads to corruption?

Also Netanyahu’s policies led to the boycott of military service.

by Anonymousreply 150October 7, 2023 6:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 151October 7, 2023 6:06 PM

Looking on the bright side-the stress from all this will cause Jewish seniorcitizens on the Upper West Side of NYC to have fatal heart attacks and strokes, making their splendid and large apartments finally available for the Chinrse to buy.

by Anonymousreply 152October 7, 2023 6:10 PM

This attack reminds me of Tet 1968. This today attack was really well done. They don’t use cell phones. Electronic surveillance is borderline useless. And there does not seem to be a Little Drummer Girl inside H working as a spy.

I realize that most of you draft dodging pacifist are wondering what the fuck Tet 1968 was :-)

by Anonymousreply 153October 7, 2023 6:12 PM

How long will it be before we hear calls on Israel to show restraint or cries that their response is "disproportionate"?

by Anonymousreply 154October 7, 2023 6:13 PM

And yet another anti-Semitic asshole enters the thread at R152.

by Anonymousreply 155October 7, 2023 6:14 PM

R145, that is what usually happens. But Netanyahu's political existence is based on the idea that he with him in charge things would be "managed," that something like this would not be possiblee.

by Anonymousreply 156October 7, 2023 6:16 PM

Honey R153, most Dataloungers weren't even born when the draft ended, much less have been around during the Tet offensive.

by Anonymousreply 157October 7, 2023 6:16 PM

R157 MOST? Are you sure about that?

by Anonymousreply 158October 7, 2023 6:24 PM

Maybe not most, R158. I'd say there's a large segment of DL that's eldergay. But older does not necessarily make one wiser, dear--case in point: Kevin Sessums.

by Anonymousreply 159October 7, 2023 6:36 PM

Can Hamas inflict more damage or are they already spent?

by Anonymousreply 160October 7, 2023 6:39 PM

R160 I was wondering the same thing. Is there a bigger plan here or just an aimless, morning killing spree?

by Anonymousreply 166October 7, 2023 6:58 PM

All that death and destruction on both sides and for what? Land and religion.

And, as per usual, most of the people killed will be normal civilians who'd rather just get on with their lives than be statistics in an ever continuing war.

by Anonymousreply 167October 7, 2023 6:58 PM

Yes, the civilians suffer the most. Every time a war breaks out, I fear it will spread.

by Anonymousreply 168October 7, 2023 7:06 PM

R166, clearly Hamas wants to swap hostages. The attack may undermine Israel's attempts to establish relationships with various Arab countries, which would benefit Iran. The psychological damage to Israel, of course, is enormous.

by Anonymousreply 169October 7, 2023 7:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 173October 7, 2023 7:19 PM

[quote] How long will it be before we hear calls on Israel to show restraint or cries that their response is "disproportionate"?

Well, it's a pretty high bar Israel has set for itself. Operation Cast Lead in Gaza killed 1,444 Palestinians, mostly civilians.

"The Israeli fatality count from Cast Lead totaled three civilians and ten soldiers (four of them from friendly fire), which put the ratio of Palestinian civilian to Israeli civilian deaths at 400:1. Predictably, however, Israel unfurled its signature brand of criminal illogic to claim the role of victim, portraying itself as under attack from Hamas rockets despite the negligible damage inflicted."

by Anonymousreply 174October 7, 2023 7:21 PM

But I thought Jared Kushner fixed everything and achieved Mid-East peace?

In reality, Hamas is going to get fucked and it’s already started.

by Anonymousreply 181October 7, 2023 8:58 PM

R119 I’m sure this is more your style.

“Elders of Zion' Gets New Life on Egyptian TV.”

by Anonymousreply 183October 7, 2023 9:06 PM

It won't be just Hamas. Israel will level Gaza. They've already cut electricity to the area and bombed 2 hospitals. The talk about war as if it's between two nation states is ludicrous.

When they destroy the last school, the last hospital, there might be some feeble talk about 'war crimes'. Israel will respond that it never targets civilians, only their respirators and schoolbooks.

by Anonymousreply 184October 7, 2023 9:09 PM

And you can blame Hamas for that, r184

by Anonymousreply 185October 7, 2023 9:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 191October 7, 2023 9:16 PM

I can’t imagine why there is a Palestinian militant extremism movement.

I mean, it’s not like there’s any problem with Israeli occupation and oppression of MILLIONS of Palestinians, land theft EVERY YEAR, and deaths of many more Palestinians by brute force attacks in Gaza and the West Bank.

They’re supposed to be pacific and compliant as they are occupied, oppressed, killed and dispossessed. What’s wrong with these fucking Palestinians?

by Anonymousreply 193October 7, 2023 9:18 PM

This is all but inevitable. It's the very definition of apartheid setup. For decades Israel has been taking over Palestinian territory and encouraging Israelis to occupy and build on Palestinian land. And the Palestinians have never recognized Israel's right to exist as a state. They both have significant responsibility for where they are today. There are no good actors in all this.

by Anonymousreply 194October 7, 2023 9:18 PM

We are sure that when Big Joe Biden warns Bibi to exercise restraint, Israel will heed the call.

No, that’s your brain dear lol

by Anonymousreply 209October 7, 2023 9:30 PM

The thing is, this will never stop. You can't have a whole bunch of radicalized, impoverished, and dispossessed people on your door step and not have this happen.

They keep and will keep coming. Israel's population is growing, too, hence the push for more land. Ironically, that's driven by the Haredi who don't actually do anything BUT have kids and prop up insane right wing parties.

They're conveniently exempt from serving in the IDF, so, hey, it's not like they actually have to die to defend the country.

The whole thing is a house cards.

They know what's happening. They think the women being raped deserve it because they're Zionists, i.e. Israelis who have never known any other home and know they will be hated wherever in the world they go so make their country the best it can be.

It's just like the attack on the Bataclan in Paris

From the BBC:

Earlier, we reported on a Hamas attack at an outdoor party in Kibbutz Urim, a suburb of the city of Ofakim in southern Israel not far from Gaza.

Gili Yoskovich was there when gunfire broke out and hid in a ditch for hours to survive.

"I was the first one to go out of the field," she tells the BBC. "Still people took two to three hours to go out.

"And all the way people are dying. Many, many people were dying in the road," she says. "Whoever tried to run away they were shooting them from both sides."

Her partner, Boaz Porat, recalls:"There was bodies right and left.

"You could really see that the terrorists took out people from the car and just gunned them down."

R229 good I'm glad the police intervened. They're annoying waving their flag and honking cars. Stop disturbing the peace and go back if it's so great. It's disrespectful to the country you're in.

R233 in the 1960s the Saudi royal family gave Wahhabist clerics a ton of (American) money to spread their ideology around the Middle East - so that they would be distracted to some extent and he would be able to modernize Saudi Arabi, this is largely why extremism began to spread around the Islamic world

by Anonymousreply 237October 7, 2023 10:38 PM

How much intelligence did Bob Menendez sell to Egypt in exchange for gold bars?

by Anonymousreply 238October 7, 2023 10:39 PM

I feel like a lot of gay people back Israel because they say "well, the Muslims hate us for being gay". But do the Israelis love us? Doubtful.

They're both religious and we all know how 99% of religions view us.

Fact is, without religion most of these wars wouldn't be happening.

by Anonymousreply 239October 7, 2023 10:40 PM

See those bombs blowing up Gaza? That’s your tax dollars. Billions. I wouldn’t worry about Israel. Theyre fine, they send their love.

by Anonymousreply 240October 7, 2023 10:49 PM

R239, gays and lesbians have full rights in Israel and most of the west. Of the 57 Muslim-majority countries, only in two or three countries is homosexuality not illegal. In 10 it is a capital offense.

by Anonymousreply 241October 7, 2023 10:54 PM

R233, Christians staged invasions and slaughtered everyone in sight for hundreds of years. Then they (sort of) got it out of their system. Islam is a newer religion, so it's still in the "kill" phase.

by Anonymousreply 242October 7, 2023 10:54 PM

Actually, R242, Christianity spread peacefully for 200 years until Constantine. Islam, on the other hand, was founded by an enslaving warlord who massacred a whole tribe of Jews, amongst other horrors. Immediately after his death, the Islamic Conquest broke out of the Saudi peninsula and wreaked death and destruction for the next several hundred years to this day, from Spain, southern France to Indonesia, committing genocide and enslaving people everywhere.

I don't think there has been a battle or a war to spread Christianity in a good 200 hundred years. Violent Islamification, on the other hand, continues to this day.

by Anonymousreply 243October 7, 2023 11:05 PM

Christians haven’t had the energy to bother for years.

The mass murder was taken up by atheists like Hitler, Mao, Lenin, and Stalin.

But that’s separate from this issue.

by Anonymousreply 244October 7, 2023 11:10 PM

R239 Actually less than 20% of Israeli Jews are religious and less than 8% are "ultra orthodox". Interestingly, most ultra orthodox are also anti-Zionist (just as a side note). Say what you want about Israel, but you can't compare it to any Muslim country with regard to gay rights and acceptance.

by Anonymousreply 245October 7, 2023 11:10 PM

Wash, Rise, Repeat for 75 years. Oy.

by Anonymousreply 246October 7, 2023 11:23 PM

R239 I've heard plenty of accounts of homophobia from gay Israelis, though. Let's not pretend it's open minded.

by Anonymousreply 247October 7, 2023 11:25 PM

R39 Let's admit it's more like western Europe and North America than Muslim/Arab countries in regard to gay acceptance.

by Anonymousreply 248October 7, 2023 11:28 PM

R247, homophobia is everywhere to some degree. In Israel and the west, it is not state sanctioned, big difference.

by Anonymousreply 249October 7, 2023 11:28 PM

Let's admit it's nowhere near as accepting as the west is, and we're not *that* accepting either.

R250 You are entitled to your opinion, however I lived in Israel for 3 years and visited many times. You are simply incorrect.

Why don’t the Palestinians go to some other Muslim country? Those people sure don’t like to take care of their own

by Anonymousreply 254October 7, 2023 11:35 PM

bc they are useful to other countries where they are

by Anonymousreply 255October 7, 2023 11:37 PM

I think that we need to wait for things to settle as there are many reports at the moment and the information provided is full of hyperbole. Hamas would only be condemning the Palestinian civilian population to death by initiating an attack on Israel, which is much more sophisticated weaponry and a better organized army. The mistreatment of Palestinians is a reality that we cannot ignore, but the majority of the Israeli population are not to blame for this and in fact, many of them support a peaceful solution that would require the creation of a single country in which everyone is equal.

The Israeli army is targeting civilians in the centre of Gaza - surely Hamas are rational enough to understand that their actions are having a devastating effect on thousands of innocent Palestinian people... This is terribly sad. Aren't there enough war, injustice and violence in this world? Israel ought to have called for negotiations as soon as Hamas initiated hostilities, to showcase the fact that their ultimate goal is peaceful integration, because their response will only bring about an escalation and plunge the Middle East into another war.

Lebanon was stupid enough to allow a large Palestinians to immigrate. Lebanon was the last Christian-majority country in the ME. It was quite affluent and sophisticated. It wasn't too long after that the country was basically torn to shreds from civil war.

Arabs used to consider themselves a people. Arabs living in the pre-modern State of Israel called themselves Arabs and identified as such. It is actually the Jews that were called Palestinians.

by Anonymousreply 260October 7, 2023 11:46 PM

R260, there's been a lot of blood under the bridge since then.

by Anonymousreply 261October 7, 2023 11:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 262October 7, 2023 11:53 PM

The Palestinians should be moved to one of the other Muslim-majority shithole countries in the area.

by Anonymousreply 263October 7, 2023 11:54 PM

R263, the other Muslim countries have always treated the Palestinians appallingly. Just read history books to see how they've been treated by Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, and let's not even talk about the Saudi beasts. This is a problem that Israel has caused by not integrating these people into Israeli society and making them emotionally invested in preserving a hybrid Jewish/Palestinian state, where there are freedom, safety and prosperity for all. The Single State solution has always been the best option, but nobody has wanted to implement it due to financial interests (the hostilities provide the American and Israeli Industrial Complexes with enormous profits), and because the Israeli right wing is aligned with the nefarious neocons.

[quote] Then Iran moves in and turns Hamas into an even more potent force for attacking Israel in their stated quest to wipe the country from the face of the Earth.

by Anonymousreply 274October 8, 2023 12:13 AM

Don't be an idiot, R268. Do you think that Putin has the resources to initiate a conflict in the Middle East, when he's already at war with Ukraine? And you must be joking by comparing him to Hitler. Are you insane? Your arguments are childish at best!

Look R269, Palestinians are in their land, just as Israelis are in their land. They have to share it because they've both been there for thousands of years, and this is only going to keep escalating until one people is exterminated, or expelled form the Holy Land. Is that what we want? Create a single state, give Palestinians full rights and integrate them into a prosperous, egalitarian democracy - after all, privileges have a funny way of making people amenable to reasonable ideas. Conversely, by keeping them isolated and in poverty, Israel has created a breeding ground for extremists and yes, Netanyahu is entirely to blame, because things have become much worse since he rose to power and he's allowed the far right to gain too much power.

And see? Now we have this mess that could have been entirely avoidable if both parties had sat to negotiate like rational adults and agreed to share the land and its very limited resources.

Again, Israel's goal has always been ethnic cleansing.

“When we have settled the land, all the Arabs will be able to do about it will be to scurry around like drugged cockroaches in a bottle.” Raphael Eitan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces, New York Times, 14 April 1983.

by Anonymousreply 278October 8, 2023 12:16 AM

"Integration" into a single-state is something that will NEVER succeed. One group needs to be moved somewhere else.

by Anonymousreply 279October 8, 2023 12:19 AM

For those who need their Barbara Starr fix (she’s no longer on CNN) she’s appearing now on the BBC News Channel.

by Anonymousreply 280October 8, 2023 12:22 AM

R275 A single integrated state sounds good and I would be all for it if Israeli Jews had 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 children. Israeli Jews, with the exception of the very small religious minority, typically have 2 children. Eventually Israel would become just another Arab/Muslim Middle Eastern country. In other words the entire Middle East would be Muslim as the only other exception was Lebanon...and that WAS Lebanon...not now. Demographic shifts have already happened in Israel due to different birth rates. In 1947/48, most of the Jews were Ashkenazi refugees from Europe. Now the majority are Jewish refugees from Arab/Muslim countries and their descendants.

by Anonymousreply 281October 8, 2023 12:25 AM

That is terrible, R278. The sad thing is that if Israel integrated Palestinians into society, their economy would greatly expand - additional workforce, additional consumer base and additional brain power that could result in better resources being developed. Peace and sharing are essential for prosperity, and war only benefits a tiny minority. I would imagine that after over four thousand years of human civilization, we human beings would have finally understood this.

There are no winners in this carnage: innocent people are going to die on both sides and that is a tragedy.

R281, why is it that Jews are not having children? Because of unfair neoliberal policies that prevent them from doing so. The only ones who are reproducing like rabbits are the Orthodox fanatics, and they contribute nothing to Israeli society while living on benefits. Sadly, they've been given far too much power, alongside the repugnant ethno-centrist New Right. Support ALL families and better economic policies would go a long way to maintain stable populations. Moreover, wealth has a tendency to moderate people's approach to religious matters - Palestinian Muslims are clinging to fanaticism out of desperation (we should remember that not all Palestinians are Muslims, and there are important Christian and secular minorities), but if they are given the option to prosper, their views will be changed - also, economically stable communities tend to have less children, because they emphasize the importance of providing every child they have with as much attention and support as possible.

In short, isolating people, condemning them to poverty, hopelessness and constant repression is the best recipe for disaster. Allowing them to become part of Israel and letting them see the advantages that this has to offer, is the best way to neutralize this threat and stop the constant and unnecessary carnage.

by Anonymousreply 282October 8, 2023 12:37 AM

R282 Well, Hamas seem quite happy to let Palestinians live, and die in poverty.

by Anonymousreply 283October 8, 2023 12:39 AM

[quote]Again, Israel's goal has always been ethnic cleansing.

Hogwash. Prior to the 1948 war, Jewish leaders begged Arabs to stay. The Arab population in what is now Israel has increased since the founding of the modern state of Israel. It was the Arab armies who planned to push the Jews into the sea. It was the Jordanian army that ethnically cleansed what is now called the West Bank of its Jewish population.

R250 You do realize that Tel Aviv is always listed as one of the "go to" destinations for gay men's travel. I don't believe you'll see any Arab countries, African countries (except perhaps South Africa) or Russia show up on any of these gay travel guides. There is a reason for that and it's not some Zionist conspiracy. Example below where Tel Aviv, Israel is #2 just after Mykonos in the #1 spot.

2. Tel Aviv, Israel If you haven’t added Tel Aviv to your travel bucket list, now is the time. Tel Aviv has a little something for everyone. Recently, LGBQIA+ travelers have been flocking to the bohemian city – situated along the Mediterranean – for unreal beaches and locals that are both supportive and open-minded. In recent years, the Pride festival has taken off in Tel Aviv, with over 250,000 in attendance to march along the vibrant beachside. Even celebrities have flocked to the gay-friendly scene in Tel Aviv – most recently Andy Cohen and Neil Patrick Harris have been drawn to the party.

by Anonymousreply 335October 8, 2023 3:37 AM

I just reviewed a bunch of raw footage - looks to me like Hamas is likely already mostly obliterated. The IDF has militants prisoner face down on the sidewalk with numbers spray painted on their backs, saw some stuff that was recent of IDF warning for immediate evacuations in areas they are about to wipe out. Looks like the counter offensive is way ahead of the news, as it should be. Some of the footage is just nuts, of Hamas on foot invading residential neighborhoods, setting fire to houses if they can't get in, one kidnapped child being brought to Palestinian kids to be tormented, IDF airstrikes are leveling 14 story buildings like they're nothing. An israeli soldier is posting some videos of his unit getting ready for counter offensive activity

by Anonymousreply 336October 8, 2023 3:39 AM

As long as the policy is kill or crush all Palestinians, that will not be the end of the story r336. Eventually, Israel is just going to have to accept a two-state solution or endless, perpetual terrorism and war. The IDF can kill all the current Hamas but it won't change the underlying situation.

[quote] [R340], remember that time Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip? And after that the rocket attacks from Gaza on Israel increased?

They withdrew, Anscher, and turned Gaza into a giant prison camp. There were only a handful of settlers in Gaza. Now they have it surrounded and blockaded. I hope you’re not suggesting to the contrary. Gaza is the worlds largest prison.

Hamas didn’t just randomly fire rockets after the withdrawal. They fired them after being goaded into it by Israeli strikes.

“We unequivocally condemn the attack of Hamas terrorists and the loss of life that has incurred,” the office wrote in a tweet. “We urge all sides to refrain from violence and retaliatory attacks. Terror and violence solve nothing.”

Saint Zelensky speaks:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned attacks on Israel by Hamas militants in a Saturday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Today, the entire world saw horrifying videos from Israel. Terrorists humiliate women and men, detain even the elderly, and show no mercy,” Zelensky’s post read. “In the face of such a terrorist strike, everyone who values life must stand in solidarity.”

“We in Ukraine have a special feeling about what has happened. Thousands of rockets in the Israeli sky… People killed just on the streets… Civilian cars shot through… Detainees being humiliated…,” Zelensky continued. “Our position is crystal clear: anyone who causes terror and death anywhere on the planet must be held accountable. Today’s terrorist attack on Israel was well-planned, and the entire world knows which sponsors of terrorism could have endorsed and enabled its organization.”

The naked body of a woman was paraded through the streets in the back of a pick-up truck on Saturday as Hamas fighters sat on her unmoving form.

A celebrating crowd surrounded the armed men in combat fatigues, who shouted “Allah Akbar” from the open back of the truck.

Some in the crowd, which included youngsters, spat on the woman’s body before the truck sped away on a day of unprecedented massacres of Israeli civilians.

The woman was later named as Shani Louk. Miss Louk’s family confirmed they had seen the video but said they “still have some kind of hope” that she had survived.

Miss Louk is believed to have been kidnapped from Israel after Hamas fighters infiltrated by air, sea and land. Hundreds of Israelis were killed in the brutal attack and dozens, including members of the Israeli defence forces were taken hostage.

“We recognised her by the tattoos, and she has long dreadlocks,” Tom Weintraub Louk, Miss Louk’s cousin, told The Washington Post.

Miss Louk had been attending an outdoor music festival near Kibbutz Urim when militants stormed the area,

by Anonymousreply 396October 8, 2023 10:55 AM

I see the RT talking points came out overnight.

The settlements are in the West Bank. They are awful and should be taken down, but this attack came from Gaza, not the West Bank.

The Israelis broadcast for the civilian Palestinian population to get to the south or coast before they started bombing. It is not Israel’s fault that Hamas puts its headquarters and military installations in the basements of schools and hospitals.

Hamas is not an organic outgrowth of the Palestinian people’s frustration. Arabs in Palestine were the most secular group in the Arab world until relatively recently. Hamas is a RWNJ terrorist organization financed and run by outside countries to distract their populations from the corruption at home. Hamas doesn’t want oppression to end since their funding is tied to continued oppression.

I was wrong about Iran and Hamas. Iran did recently start sending money to Hamas. Personally I find that shocking, but perhaps Hamas went begging to them after funding from some of the gulf states dried up. And perhaps Hamas decided it was now or never for war because Iran couldn’t totally replace the amount of money they’ve been getting from Saudi Arabia and the potential peace deal was endangering that.

My employee got in touch with me this morning thank goodness.

by Anonymousreply 406October 8, 2023 12:38 PM

R397, I don't want to quarrel with you, ElderLez, since I enjoy your posts so much, but I wanted to emphasize that it's well-known that Hamas has been funded by Iran, and worked along side Hezbollah, since at least the 1990s. There are a lot of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Hezbollah's home base, and Hezbollah helps to train them as soldiers for Hamas. On religious grounds, it seems bizarre, and the two organizations did, in fact, break up once, briefly, in 2012, but, as we know, having a common enemy is everything. The connection to Hezbollah is important because Hezbollah knows what it is doing. It clearly helped Hamas establish an elaborate series of tunnels under Gaza--a system Israel knew little about until its 2006 war with Hezbollah. The sophistication of the Hamas attack yesterday also suggests the close involvement of Iranian advisors.

by Anonymousreply 412October 8, 2023 1:16 PM

In Times Square on Sunday, the Democratic Socialists of America will host an “All Out for Palestine” rally. Wear a mask so you’re not recognized, the organizers say.

The DSA is the party of Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Rashida Talib — and oh yes, New York’s very own Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal “Fire Alarm” Bowman. They are quick to lecture about “extremism” in America. What do they say about this?

“Never mind the hundreds of Israeli civilians and children who have been murdered, wounded, abducted, and terrorized. Their lives mean nothing to the DSA. Nothing,” Congressman Ritchie Torres rightly wrote Saturday. “The NYC-DSA is revealing itself for what it truly is: an antisemitic stain on the soul of America’s largest city.”

Omar has called for a “deescalation and ceasefire,” meaning that Israel should just accept that 300 — and likely more — of their people were brutally murdered. War crimes should be accepted, because hey, they’re Palestinians.

“Such senseless violence will only repeat the back and forth cycle we’ve seen, which we cannot allow to continue,” Omar wrote.

Gaza is not occupied by Israel, who unilaterally withdrew in 2005 and abandoned settlements. Gaza then chose Hama. They have attacked Israel before, during, and after occupation.

Israel is far from blameless, but let’s not ignore how this actually unfolded. Or the reality that Palestinians are treated even worse under Hamas.

[quote]They withdrew a settlement and locked the door. Even now Gazans can't leave and Netanyahoo knows this. Israel controls 80% of the electricity to Gaza. Gaza has been under a blockade for years. It is in fact an open air prison. Once again, Israel was the initial funder of Hamas, hoping to divide the secular, nationalistic PLO and PA.

Why doesn't Gaza have its own electric and water supplies when it's been given billions in aid over the last 20 years? Could it be because Hamas and the PLO officials took the money for themselves rather than provide for their people?

Trying to remove all agency from young men for the actions yesterday - the rapes, the killings, the spitting on naked corpses - and arguing that Hamas is the creation of Israel just makes you a rape apologist who is relaxed about the murder of innocent civillians.

by Anonymousreply 450October 8, 2023 3:29 PM

"The unlawful killing of Palestinian protesters is perhaps the clearest illustration of how Israeli authorities use proscribed acts to maintain the status quo. In 2018, Palestinians in Gaza began to hold weekly protests along the border with Israel, calling for the right of return for refugees and an end to the blockade. Before protests even began, senior Israeli officials warned that Palestinians approaching the wall would be shot. By the end of 2019, Israeli forces had killed 214 civilians, including 46 children."

R443 wake up. Olso "peace process" started THIRTY YEARS AGO still with little to show. There isn't going to be any 2 state solution. It's a pipe dream. If it were to happen it would have had to happen back in the 70s or 80s before the settlements were so entrenched. Look at the maps of West Bank,. no way to create a viable Palestinian state.

Israel had to pay the settlers $200,000 per family to vacate the Gaza strip, and some of them still made a stink. And there were that many settlers in Gaza.

Imagine trying to relocate 600K settlers from the West Bank, many of whom are fanatics.

Gaza is also adjacent to Egyptian territory. Who needs Israel when iIn the name of Muslim solidarity they should be able to come and go across that border.

R308 Yes that is true, but who in their right mind would choose to visit said settlements on the West Bank? As mentioned above, Israel's Jewish population is largely secular. There are even more places in the Bible Belt of the US southeast that I wouldn't choose for a holiday. As someone who lived in Israel, I absolutely guarantee you that your average Israeli Jew would be much more comfortable socializing with the homos than with either the Ultra Orthodox or wacky zealots in the West Bank. Fuck, Tel Aviv has more rainbow flags than San Francisco! It is AMAZINGLY gay friendly. I am not saying that this makes everything done in Israel right, only that stressing that Israel is overall a gay-friendly place and at least comparable to the West.

by Anonymousreply 455October 8, 2023 3:33 PM

So one's viewpoint on this conflict all boils down to "is it good for the gays?" Sounds extremely shallow.

by Anonymousreply 456October 8, 2023 3:36 PM

R448, context? Egypt also blockades Gaza, which is information you didn’t supply. After the downfall of the Ottoman Empire, Britain tried a two state solution, rejected by Arabs and Palestinians but not Jews, which is also information you didn’t supply. The Palestinians blocked Jewish ownership of land, which is also information you didn’t supply, When Britain just abandoned the situation and the UN declared Israel a state, Arabs and Palestinians attacked.

As for context on r451’s post about “peaceful protest”, perhaps the part where the Palestinians were rioting, throwing rocks, burning tires, and rushing the border should be included.

There is plenty wrong with Israel, and not just Netanyahu’s extremism. But you are suggesting they just sit idle and ignore their neighbor, whose stated goal is to eradicate the Jewish nation.

R456 My last paragraph: "I am not saying that this makes everything done in Israel right, only that stressing that Israel is overall a gay-friendly place and at least comparable to the West."

I am not saying that is the end all/be all. I am simply addressing something others have said outright or implied that is simply not true. You may hate Israel for a variety of reasons, but not because it is "just like the rest of the Middle East" with regard to gays. That my dear is just not true. You may also feel sympathy for Arabs/Muslims, but they are largely VERY unfriendly to gays and being gay in those countries is dangerous. All these things can be true at the same time.

I don't think so. Israel's oldest newspaper, The Haaretz, in an oped today:

"The disaster that befell Israel on the holiday of Simchat Torah is the clear responsibility of one person: Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister, who has prided himself on his vast political experience and irreplaceable wisdom in security matters, completely failed to identify the dangers he was consciously leading Israel into when establishing a government of annexation and dispossession, when appointing Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir to key positions, while embracing a foreign policy that openly ignored the existence and rights of Palestinians."

R483, I agree with the assessment of The Haaretz that Netanyahu is directly responsible for the security breach--clearly he bears full responsibility. He is, after all, the leader of the country.

I still think, however, that it remains to be seen that he won't benefit from war and push through his right-wing agenda (although hopefully the Israelis are smarter than that, to let him get away with it), and it will certainly mean disaster for the Palestinians. But disaster and misery have always been in the cards for them (being in a no-win situation caused and exacerbated by Israel), other than being the unlucky recipients of the cynical "support" of terrorism from Iran and the like. The Palestinians are desperate people, hence, they embrace the worst behavior of others who purport to be fighting for them but are, effectively, helping to destroy them.

[quote] There’s something I have to say because it’s really making (me) curious as to where we are as a society. Yesterday, I and the world watched as a Terrorist organization massacred 600 innocent humans and took children and families hostage. I posted a message of heartbreak and shock. I, who have always been critical of the Israeli Government and it’s pattern of occupation and their attacks on innocent Gazans was personally attacked, shamed, unfollowed and threatened. Instead of compassion & humanity…

[quote] People are treating this as if it’s a FOOTBALL match with two teams when the points scored are dead human bodies. Waving flags around as if they are team jerseys. Have we lost our fucking minds? Somewhere in a basement right now, tied up and terrified are little CHILDREN who have never done anything to hurt a Palestinian. Somewhere on the streets of Gaza are innocent people who are being shelled, because terrorists decided it was best to destroy any opportunity for peace. And the response is…

[quote] To shame people like me for expressing grief and heartache, the same grief I share anytime an innocent Palestinian is displaced or killed? Is this where we are? I guess it is. One of the many vile messages I will share with you that I received yesterday is: “my only regret is that they didn’t kill more Israelis.” Not soldiers… civilians. People. This isn’t a war. It’s a massacre. It’s a bloodbath. And instead of communal despair, so many are treating this as if it’s politics or a a rugby match…

R509, you manage to be even more disingenuous in your near fascist position. You claim “Netanyahu’s opponents chose to politicize the military,” yet the article you link is not nearly as histrionic. It says that 10,000 *reservists* said they would not show up if called, in protest of Netanyahu’s attempt to strong arm the court system. Reservists are not active duty, so they wouldn’t have prevented this. There is no evidence that they have declined to be activated after Hamas’ attack.

The sequence is that Bibi started this. So if anyone is to blame for compromising security with the courts, it’s him.

Your attempt to blame the democratic process is pretty craven.

by Anonymousreply 513October 8, 2023 8:09 PM

Israel just cut off gas and electricity to Gaza. There are Israeli air strikes on Gaza every 15 minutes. There is no place to hide. This is what Israel does to the Palestinians. Sorry, but I don’t support Hamas, but I don’t support this, but again, I guess I do every time I pay taxes as an American.

by Anonymousreply 514October 8, 2023 8:13 PM

"Your attempt to blame the democratic process is pretty craven"

The democratic process resulted in Netanyahu.

The other side should have won.

They didn't.

I blame the side that, in trying to undo the democratic process, opened the door to the gates of hell in Gaza.

And I think the same about the US. I don't give a shit about the courts, except the amount of money and time we waste fighting over them.

Fuck the fights over Ginsberg and Thomas.

by Anonymousreply 515October 8, 2023 8:17 PM

Hamas is embedding themselves within the civilian population and infrastructure, which was the plan all along.

by Anonymousreply 516October 8, 2023 8:18 PM

R501,,What if Israel kidnapped 1000 of the children in Gaza. They don’t have to, they just shoot them at protests and bomb their homes. Or jail them. Where have you been the last 20 years?

by Anonymousreply 517October 8, 2023 8:19 PM

Israel has been broadcasting in Arabic for the civilian population in Gaza to head to the coast or southern border.

by Anonymousreply 518October 8, 2023 8:26 PM

R511, according to Wiki she’s still alive but she must be getting up there in years now.

by Anonymousreply 519October 8, 2023 8:26 PM

R517, at least according to Israel the killing of children and civilians is generally not directed at them, but the result of targeting Hamas or other military targets. There are certainly exceptions, but the Israelis often warn civilians at protests or before they bomb military targets. The West Bank and Gaza are incredibly dense, plus Hamas prefers to locate themselves near hospitals and schools and civilians so that Israelis will be blamed for their deaths. The savagery we’ve seen the last two days is different - the civilians are the targets.

I don’t ask you to take Israel’s side, but I genuinely mystified how you could expect them to give Hamas and Palestinians greater freedom. Can you identify a time when Palestinians have responded to Israeli concessions, such in Gaza, with peace?

by Anonymousreply 520October 8, 2023 8:35 PM

R514 Yes. That's just terrible. How dare those mean Israelis cut off utilities to Gaza. Hell, they should be giving them gas and electric rebates and covering them in the Iron Dome to try and keep them all safe.

by Anonymousreply 521October 8, 2023 8:44 PM

[quote] plus Hamas prefers to locate themselves near hospitals and schools and civilians so that Israelis will be blamed for their deaths

As does Hezbollah:

A mosque is also in close proximity to the high school, hindering the IDF from neutralizing the Hezbollah fighters. Where is @ UNIFIL?

[quote][R501],,What if Israel kidnapped 1000 of the children in Gaza. They don’t have to, they just shoot them at protests and bomb their homes. Or jail them. Where have you been the last 20 years?

When Israel shot hundreds of protestors at the fence in 2018 there was worldwide condemnation. I condemned it. It was appalling.

But not we know what those "protestors" would have done if they'd broken through and run riot.

I want to see a solution and peace but until Hamas/PLO value healthy Palestinians over dead Israelis, then it's not going to happen. "From the river to the sea" means the end of Israel's existence. How do men who spit on the bodies of murdered and raped women become good neighbours?

by Anonymousreply 523October 8, 2023 8:45 PM

They make their own children human shields, which is an 'honor', then when the kids get blown up they turn around to the world and act like it's a travesty. For them, that's a win-win!

A religion where people are literally born just to die for it. In 2023.

They're sure different!

by Anonymousreply 524October 8, 2023 8:48 PM

Per capita, the deaths from these atrocities perpetrated by the Palestinians is many more times the number of victims of 9/11. Israel has the moral right to clear Gaza down to the bedrock and obliterate anyone within the border.

by Anonymousreply 525October 8, 2023 8:49 PM

This in an interesting analysis from The Duran. Basically, what Ukraine couldn't achieve (full political and ideological consensus among Western countries), has been instantly achieved through the Palestine/Israeli conflict. This has also caused BRICS Plus to be divided, as many of its members support Palestine and others, are unconditional supporters of Israel - incidentally, the only two countries that can remain neutral and are calling for peaceful negotiations are Russia and China, which have good relationships with both sides. This is just repugnant and it's horrifying how the US would destabilize the Middle East AGAIN in order to slow down its loss of power and political relevance, which has been rapidly lost through the Ukrainian proxy war.

What is absurd and stupid about my assertions, R311? Have you seen the global impact that Ukraine's war and sanctions against Russia and China have had for 90% of the economy, and how the only sectors that are rapidly expanding are those linked to the Military Industrial Complex? This will only cause further economic instability and spill throughout the region, which will impact energy supplied and therefore, PRICES. The economic impact that this will have for most countries will be EXTREME.

In order to avoid making concessions, we're shooting ourselves in the right foot after blowing off the left one, so the US can slow down its empire's collapse and neoliberalism can extend its disastrous global reign for a few more years... Also, the US is negotiating a deal with Saudi Arabia, in which they would provide that violent theocracy with NUCLEAR WEAPONS. Are we fucking insane?!?!?!!!!! This has to stop right now!

"On Friday, October 6, Senator Booker arrived in Israel for several days of planned meetings and site visits ahead of the start of an Abraham Accords-focused N7 summit on regional economic integration in Tel Aviv, at which he was scheduled to speak on Tuesday. Senator Booker and accompanying staff were in Jerusalem when Hamas launched their attacks against Israel on Saturday, and sheltered in place for their safety. Islam is particularly dangerous - yes there are specific political factors like the funding of Wahhabism that have led to the current dynamic but the fact is the text itself is especially violent and totalitarian compared to other religions. They might not be as politically liberal as American Jews, but will likely be socially liberal. If the neighbor is Muslim, you can hope that all they do is ignore you as that would be the best you could hope for. They almost certainly will not be your friends (assuming you are gay).

by Anonymousreply 544October 8, 2023 9:58 PM

Palestinians want peace, it's Israel that prefers the status quo. Peace would mean ending the occupation. Peace would mean higher costs for Israel. The only time Israel has given up occupied territory is when Western powers force them to.

"Israel, for its part, has consistently opted for stalemate rather than the sort of agreement outlined above. The reason is obvious: the deal’s cost is much higher than the cost of making no deal. The damages Israel would risk incurring through such an accord are massive. They include perhaps the greatest political upheaval in the country’s history; enormous demonstrations against – if not majority rejection of – Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem and over the Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary; and violent rebellion by some Jewish settlers and their supporters.

There could also be bloodshed during forcible evacuations of West Bank settlements and rifts within the body implementing the evictions, the Israeli army, whose share of religious infantry officers now surpasses one third. Israel would lose military control over the West Bank, resulting in less intelligence-gathering, less room for manoeuvre in future wars, and less time to react to a surprise attack. It would face increased security risks from a Gaza-West Bank corridor, which would allow militants, ideology and weapons-production techniques to spread from Gaza training camps to the West Bank hills overlooking Israel’s airport. Israeli intelligence services would no longer control which Palestinians enter and exit the occupied territories. The country would cease extraction of the West Bank’s natural resources, including water, lose profits from managing Palestinian customs and trade, and pay the large economic and social price of relocating tens of thousands of settlers."

R545 Palestinians want peace? Do you really believe that? You may dislike Jews, Israelis or whatever, but statements like the Palestinians want peace are absolutely ridiculous. The Palestinians want the Jews out and that is the solution they've been holding out for since 1948. Israel would be in much better shape if they had peace with their Arab neighbors. The security costs, not to mention the emotional costs, have been enormous. That is not to say that I agree with decision Israel has made and I am not a fan of Netanyahu, but compared to Hamas...no comparison. Right now I think the world is seeing it. Europe has now been primed with their own Muslim problems and are probably beginning to see things a little differently.

by Anonymousreply 553October 8, 2023 10:20 PM

Bill Maher will make a lot of hay out this. He's probably already jabbering on X about it.

by Anonymousreply 554October 8, 2023 10:22 PM

R545, thank you very much for providing a different point of view. The fact that we're refusing to hear Palestinian points of view and dehumanizing them completely, is truly terrifying - we're repeating the same propaganda model that has been applied against Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and China, and the fact that we haven't learned anything about how we're being manipulated into supporting the total obliteration of innocent human beings, is heartbreaking.

Yes, I don't support what has happened (I have already written about how a Single State solution in which Palestinians are integrated into Israel and given full rights is the only real solution), but the fact that we're stifling all the voices that try to present another side of the events is preoccupying, especially because it will lead to further violence.

The Palestinians could have had their own state, with more land than they have currently, had they accepted the UN partition in 1947. They preferred to attack Israel. They could have had their own state in Gaza, but rather than looking at how Egypt regained land by making peace, they preferred to attack Israel.

by Anonymousreply 564October 8, 2023 10:54 PM

And we have a winner, @R557 - if you follow the money, you'll always find that every war has the purpose of increasing the wealth and power of the elites.

R558, how many Palestinian people have been massacred throughout the years by the Israeli army and even settlers? Many more than we can imagine. Horrible acts of violence have been perpetrated by both sides and politicians have kept escalating this conflict until any possible solution was off the table: perpetual conflict, banishment or annihilation will be the only results of this tragedy, which has been deliberately set up to continue by the Israeli and US Military Industrial Complexes.

Palestinians have as much right to that land as the Jewish people do. They've both been living in the Holy Land for thousands of years and it is indispensable for them to share it under conditions of full equality - how can we expect them to be happy with the idea of being kicked out of certain areas and being banned from living in their own country? Palestinians and Israelis share a genetic and cultural legacy, for millennia they spoke the same language and they BOTH own that country. Why should they be denied the opportunity to share in the prosperity of Israel? Can't you see that this is what lies at the source of this conflict?

We need to stop demonizing either part and advocate for peace and the creation of a single country where everyone is granted the same rights. Anything else will only cause further escalation and bring about an endless war that will end up completely destroying the Middle East.

Gaza is still occupied territory.

Nevermind, R503, found it. Holy fucking shit!!!

by Anonymousreply 571October 8, 2023 11:03 PM

R562, I agree that Muslims don't have a right to claim victimhood over the Crusades (most of which were waged against European religious movements that challenged the Catholic Church's authority, and Eastern pagans who refused to convert and pay tithes to the Church, by the way), but the Palestinian people are also a conquered people, because they are not Arabs and they were not Muslims before they were forced to convert n the 7th Century.

This is NOT a purely religious issue, as it has been misrepresented as being. Catholic and Orthodox Palestinians are also discriminated. This is caused by an unwillingness to share the limited resources within a poor country that relies on foreign aid in order to exist in its present form. The sad thing is that if both parties collaborated, they could overcome the majority of the limitations imposed on them by the poverty of the land.

by Anonymousreply 572October 8, 2023 11:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 573October 8, 2023 11:09 PM

But I also think creating a single state is now impossible. The Hamas “freedom fighters” killed senior citizens - not as collateral casualties - but as direct targets.

I have heard many Israelis willing to compromise for peace. It was done successfully with Egypt. Where are the Palestinians who are leading the charge for peace?

R560 I did take the time to read The Guardian article. Both The Guardian and Nathan Thrall are known to have an ant-Israel bias. I can read CNN and NBC News and not know the opinion until I've read the article, not so with Guardian. I know who the 100% victim and 100% villain is before I finish the first paragraph. The fact is, it's Israel that has given up mass amounts of land (including their only oil) and making their borders much more difficult to defend from hostal neighbors for a signature on a piece of paper. I lived in Israel when the Sinai Peninsula went to Egypt and the Israeli settlements were removed. There is precedent for that. Just because I have a different opinion than you doesn't make me a liar, but name calling makes you an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 580October 8, 2023 11:34 PM

R576 The Palestinians wanted a state conforming the the 1967 borders. It is the minimum according to international law (they could have asked for 1947 borders)

Just thinking about the famous quote from the great Israeli diplomat, Abba Eban: "The Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity." Truer words were never spoken. With the passage of time, it has become more difficult to make a 2 state solution as was the original partition plan. Everything could have been much better for everyone if the partition of 2 Arab states and 1 Jewish state had been accepted rather than decades of hostility.
