She was everywhere in the 90s and the go-to female lead to accompany the biggest male stars: Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Pierce Brosnan… then she just disappeared.
Why did Rene Russo’s career go straight down the shitter?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 8, 2023 5:26 PM |
She turned 45 in 1999, and was a leading lady/beauty rather than a character actress. So, age. Age happened.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 6, 2023 3:12 PM |
Just watched her in Get Shorty. She was in a lot of movies
The latest one I saw her in was “The Intern” with Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 6, 2023 3:13 PM |
She should have changed her name to Renée.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 6, 2023 3:17 PM |
Quite the jawline on that broad
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 6, 2023 3:18 PM |
Her sister was married to Bernie Taupin!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 6, 2023 3:18 PM |
She was fantastic in Get Shorty. Do NOT watch the sequel which she wisely passed up.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 6, 2023 3:19 PM |
She’s a great actress and beautiful. A modern Vivien Leigh. She’s highly underrated.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 6, 2023 3:46 PM |
Loved her in the Thomas Crown Affair remake.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 6, 2023 4:13 PM |
To be fair, the careers of those "biggest male stars" of the '90s are also largely in the shitter. The only exception right now would be Costner thanks to Yellowstone. I'm surprised Rene hasn't ever popped up on TV, but I'm guessing she lives a pretty comfortable life and doesn't feel the need to work non-stop.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 6, 2023 4:14 PM |
Didn’t she play Thor’s mother opposite Anthony Hopkins?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 6, 2023 4:36 PM |
If you haven’t seen Nightcrawler, the indie with Jake Gyllenhaal watch it for her performance. Brilliant!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 6, 2023 4:46 PM |
She seems like a genuinely nice person. See her reunion with Pierce.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 6, 2023 4:48 PM |
My step-father was an extra in Tin Cup. He said she was absolutely breathtaking in person. Said Cheech Marin was a super nice guy.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 6, 2023 5:43 PM |
She's an interesting case. She was in many high profile movies, but was there ever a movie she headlined?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 6, 2023 5:46 PM |
Radiant and funny onscreen, and a long-time supporter of gay rights. In 2002 she revealed that after her dad walked out on her family, her mom's lesbian friends helped raise her.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 6, 2023 5:52 PM |
Russo only had a single role as the sole lead, R14: Buddy, a 1997 comedy about an eccentric socialite who raised a chimp as part of her family. In every other one of her movies, she had a male co-star who received higher billing.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 6, 2023 5:56 PM |
R14 R16 Buddy was a really sweet movie, but almost too scary at times for a kids movie. It plays more like a historical drama. Great supporting cast with Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, Robbie Coltrane, and Irma P. Hall. It was dragged by critics and flopped at the box office, but it’s better than 95% of films being made today. Rene is so effervescent and charming, she’s bipolar but no one in Hollywood has a bad thing to say about her. She was also raised by her Mother’s lesbian friends.

The look she gives Ving Rhames when she walks up the stairs is iconic, Bette Davis level.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 7, 2023 2:00 AM |
Delroy Lindo.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 7, 2023 3:04 AM |
R19 ooops don’t tell the woke police. I’ll be canceled.
This is Gladys Knight’s best song, she’s so pretty in this video:
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 7, 2023 3:15 AM |
i just saw Get Shorty yesterday and thought she was radiant but a little long in the tooth.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 7, 2023 3:54 AM |
Never even nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 7, 2023 4:02 AM |
You could frame it as a successful model having made it in the movies, too. But it couldn't last forever.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 7, 2023 6:30 AM |
R14 No and nobody was asking for her.
I don’t take issue with her, I think she’s a fine actress but she was like a Hollywood insider. She was definitely well liked and sought after but she had absolutely no public interest.
I’ve never heard of a Renee Russo fan.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 7, 2023 8:11 AM |
She and Gillian Anderson have a doppleganger thing going on.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 7, 2023 10:49 AM |
Pierce Brosnan is so beautiful. I envy her starring opposite him.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 7, 2023 10:56 AM |
She is a great beauty and in interviews comes across as kind and unassuming. Love her.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 7, 2023 11:24 AM |
Love Rene… here she is in a1981 documentary about the modeling industry and worried about what her next career move will be as she ages out of being a model. You’re gonna be ok, sweetie!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 7, 2023 2:42 PM |
I was a fan back when she was acting a lot. She’s got that it factor. I haven’t seen her in anything for awhile.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 7, 2023 4:15 PM |
Talk about a name I haven’t heard in years.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 7, 2023 4:22 PM |
Her career was never really all that. She was in a number of movies but she was forgettable.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 7, 2023 4:47 PM |
People confused her with Linda Evangelista
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 7, 2023 4:54 PM |
I always felt she was the go-to actresses who'd be a good fit for older male stars; so they weren't paired with someone too young...but still beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 7, 2023 7:46 PM |
She’s married to one of the Gilroy brothers. She’s fine She. sends her love!!!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 7, 2023 8:02 PM |
She aged out. She was already 40 when she hit her stride.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 7, 2023 8:20 PM |
The infamous Gilroy brothers! I'm impressed!

She and Andi MacDowell filled a very distinctive purpose in films in the 1990s, lots of aging leading men in need of a beautiful leading lady of a certain age who would not read as psychologically complicated and upstage them. Their fees were also probably fairly reasonable and they seem as if the would be easy to work with. Russo had a bit more going on "acting-wise" than MadDowell and her looks were a bit more "approachable" whereas MacDowell's looks were more of an ideal as evidenced in her very first film St. Elmo's Fire where she played the romantic obsession of Emilio Estevez character.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 7, 2023 9:34 PM |
R38 Andi McDowell, another name I have not of in years. She used to do those hair dye commercials.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 8, 2023 2:35 AM |
Not heard of***
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 8, 2023 2:36 AM |
Andi McDowell is still in the news a lot (recently for going gray) and because her daughter is now an actress and recently had a splashy wedding.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 8, 2023 6:34 AM |
[quote]MacDowell's looks were more of an ideal as evidenced in her very first film St. Elmo's Fire
Actually St. Elmo's Fire was more of a second chance than a first film. Her first film was Greystoke where her line delivery and accent were so bad Glenn Close was called in to dub the entire film.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 8, 2023 6:54 AM |
Honestly she wasn’t that attractive as far as movie stars go. She looks great compared to say Kim Davis. But…..
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 8, 2023 6:59 AM |
r38 r39 r41 Her name is ANDIE, not Andi.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 8, 2023 2:34 PM |
Rene pretty much got her start when she was featured on Merv Griffin's Model shows. She was already a superstar model but Merv always intro'd her with Scavullo's comment that she was the most beautiful girl int he world. I loved the shows and she showed herself to be a charming and funny guest. She once said if she had to do it again, she would work harder and save every cent so she could retire early. I never got the feeling she was overly motivated to work so some brief appearances in movies and marrying a writer/producer and retiring sounds like what she was aspiring towards.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 8, 2023 2:44 PM |
When she hit back then every article printed talked about her age. Like Hollywood was patting itself on the back for casting a crone. She was barely 40.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 8, 2023 2:54 PM |
She had a great voice, lots of humor in it. Andie McDowell was monotone unfortunately.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 8, 2023 3:24 PM |
She had good comedic timing, see Tin Cup and Get Shorty. She did drama well too, see Ransom. Very versatile as an actress.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 8, 2023 3:26 PM |
She was also believable as a kick ass law enforcement officer.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 8, 2023 3:45 PM |
Tin Cup, Get Shorty, Thomas Crown Affair remake. Three very well-made, intelligent, well received, very watchable movies, all with satisfying endings and afterwards you say, that was great fun and walk out happy. That’s a fantastic resume.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 8, 2023 4:49 PM |
She is one of my favorite films of all time. Night Crawler.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 8, 2023 4:56 PM |
In the Line of Fire, Outbreak, and Ransom were great too.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 8, 2023 4:58 PM |
She’s only won a Saturn Award for Nightcrawler. It’s unbelievable she was never nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar, especially for Ransom.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 8, 2023 4:59 PM |
R20 is the token right-wing troll who needs to whine about wokeness
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 8, 2023 5:01 PM |
She had two careers - model than actress. So her career was large & then got old (for Hollywood standards). Did she muck her face up with the plastics?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 8, 2023 5:13 PM |
R54 it was a joke. You’re insane.
