What do DL denizens have to say about Charlton? He was handsome and hunky back in the day. He was a right winger, wasn't he, in later days at least?
It's Charlton Heston's 100th Birth Anniversary Today!

A pic of very young Charlton from the amateur film "Julius Caesar" (1950).

Another actor who played God/Jesus/Moses on screen, then was never able to step out of character in real life. One of the bigger assholes in Hollywood of his time, which is really saying something.

Now that he’s dead, can we finally pry that goddamn gun out of his cold, dead hand?
Anyone know if he was buried with it?
(Anyone with a shovel know where’s he’s buried?)

Never a great actor, but he had presence, which worked to his disadvantage in the long run. He became over identified with Biblical and Roman-era spectacles and it probably limited the roles he was offered with more contemporary material. Later on, he mostly was in long-forgotten films or all-star disaster epics, followed by television and then pathetic cameos late in his career (Waynes Word 2, for example)He's one of those one-time liberals (he was at the March on Washington in 1963) who claimed he was left behind by liberalism and the Democratic Party. Mostly likely he ultimately was just an embittered old white guy with ever less of a career who craved the spotlight. He remained married to the same woman for 60+ years---she must have been long suffering.

Anyone on DL catch him and Vanessa Redgrave in Macbeth at the Ahmanson?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 4, 2023 7:20 PM |
What was the play where he had to wear a wig, and he he insisted that the wig be fitted over the wig already on his head?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 4, 2023 7:27 PM |
Ghastly a*shole of a man. F*ck him and the NRA.

Get 'yer hands off me, you damn, dirty ape!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 4, 2023 7:36 PM |
Overrated, even in his day.
I mean, he made Earthquake. 'nuff said.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 4, 2023 7:55 PM |
Earthquake is BELOVED on DL!

Someone must post Chuck's guest appearance on What's My Line? in which he didn't seem to understand he was supposed to fool the panel with a fake voice. He's gorgeous there, I think publicizing The 10 Commandments but wholly without a sense of humor.

Horrible egomaniac. Closet case who would use his driver/set stand-in to pick up young guys and abuse them.
BUT effective at times in his Apes/Soylent Green phase.
Other than that, a terrible actor lacking in connection with other players in screen, depth of character, humor (as noted), and gravitas.
A lifelong poser.

I hated his legs.

I like seeing him as a young man at r10. He has a resemblance to a young Michael York. Thanks for sharing that vid.

He seemed nice enough although maybe a little star struck when we met. I thought he was short.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 4, 2023 8:43 PM |
He's still dead, yes?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 4, 2023 8:45 PM |
What is a "Birth Anniversary"?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 4, 2023 8:45 PM |
I was wrong at r8.
He wore a bald cap over his wig. Even better.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 4, 2023 8:46 PM |
Or was it two stacked wigs?
Apparently George Takei says yes.

I was just thinking, as I set out to do battle with my fellow motorists on a nearby freeway, how useful it would be to install a set of spikes on my wheels like Messala’s in Ben-Hur.

Complicated man. Walked with MLK but NRA nut.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 5, 2023 12:24 AM |
Not that complicated. He got rich, had meager talent and eventually put in his lot with right wingers.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 5, 2023 12:36 AM |
I just wanted to cuddle with him and say, "Daddy."
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 5, 2023 12:42 AM |
I've read he wanted to have a lengthy full-frontal scene in a movie. His agent and his studio would not let him do it.

His sister was my teacher and undergrad advisor at Northwestern. She could act rings around. I gather they disliked each other.
