The Brat goes down in flames to Nakashima - 6-0, 6-2.
At this point, surely he would be better taking some time out and sorting out whatever physical /mental stuff is going on? Can't stand the asshole but this is just embarrassing l.

Oink oink. Peppa has definitely slimmed down a lot though.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 6, 2023 9:10 AM |
There a lot of tennis hotties. I still find it strange that not a single professional male tennis player has been out while playing. I know Jan-Michael Gambill came out, but I'm pretty sure it was after he retired.
I know people say it's because they're scared of losing sponsorships, or playing in homophobic countries, but there have been plenty of out lesbians in tennis who've got on fine. Take Martina Navratilova for instance, who was out many years ago when the world was a lot less accepting than it is now.
It's not a team sport, so you don't really have to worry about jibes from team members and tennis seems too classy to have hooligans yelling slurs from the stands. I know it definitely wouldn't be accepted at the likes of Wimbledon, for example.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 6, 2023 9:26 AM |
Ben Rothenberg said that if a top male player came out now, sponsors would be very positive. Big sponsors like Nike support Pride now, they look to appeal to younger people.
It seems that they just aren't brave enough.

It depends on your criteria, R31. Roddick had a great behind, Shelton has a tight body and his face might be called jolie laide.
Who's on your hot list?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 6, 2023 6:09 PM |
A young Vilas
Those biceps on his playing fist…er hand.

Thems real legz…screw that lame Dane.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 6, 2023 6:45 PM |
Vilas was a sexy beast. Young Vilas and Borg...just gorgeous (Borg needs the hair, though, when the hair is short you realize he is about a centimeter from being a cyclops his eyes are so close together.)
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 6, 2023 6:56 PM |
Victor Pecci, who took out Vilas and Connors in the '79 French Open and a set off of Borg in the final, wasn't bad either. I wonder if the earring in his right ear meant anything.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 6, 2023 8:22 PM |
The final of the China Open is going to be Swiatek-Samsonova.
Swiatek destroyed Gauff and now has a HtH of 7-1 over Gauff.
Samsonova beat Rybot and now has a HtH of 4-0 over Rybakina.
Some players can't seem to handle certain players well and sometimes it seems random. (Coco must be very grateful to Peppa who has another random-seeming 4-0 HtH over Swiatek and beat her in the USO.)
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 7, 2023 10:26 AM |
Rybot did all this deconstructing of Sabalenka 's game, only to lose horribly to a relatively unknown player?? So fucking inconsistent.
I was so looking forward to a Rybot vs Iga Final, dammit!
Hope this Final will be Samsnova's turn to be victorious, over Iga!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 7, 2023 11:13 AM |
R40, i would hardly call a 6-3,6-2 result a destruction.
Also, did you forget Coco beat Iga in Cincinnati? What names you think she couldn't have repeated that at USO? After all it was the summer of Coco
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 7, 2023 11:17 AM |
[quote]i would hardly call a 6-3,6-2 result a destruction. Also, did you forget Coco beat Iga in Cincinnati? What names you think she couldn't have repeated that at USO? After all it was the summer of Coco
I was actually wrong and Iga actually has an 8-1 HtH over Coco now. I don't understand your second point - the USO was only last MONTH and Coco still can't beat Iga beyond one fluke game despite it being 'the summer of Coco'? Some players just seem to have their kryptonite or nemesis.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 7, 2023 11:21 AM |
Is Sinner kryptonite for Medvedev?
Djoke for everbody?

Iga is a better returner than Rybot, a better mover, has more rally tolerance. I think she should get this final over Samsonova but let's see.

Korda beat Medvedev in 2!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 8, 2023 11:49 AM |
That first set was the stuff of nightmares from Swiatek. One winner, zero unforced errors, over quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 8, 2023 12:24 PM |
Iga wins her sixth WTA1000 tournament. She's still just 22-years-old - but she does need to win more slams other than Roland Garros so I want to see more of that.
(And, reminder that DL fave Peppa Pig, of all people, has a 4-0 HtH over Iga.)
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 8, 2023 12:53 PM |
Swiatek played like it was a practice session (didn't remove her long sleeves or break a sweat) and beat the hell out of her.
Kasatkina's Tokyo video was posted yesterday. The Pavlyuchenkova interview is worth watching and the segment with Rybakina's cameo was cute.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 8, 2023 7:52 PM |
[quote]Iga probably won't ever let these 2 interview her
Kasatkina's lobbying her for an interview; I think she will eventually do one. They share awkward, self-deprecating senses of humor. Swiatek's handlers just need to back off a bit and let her learn to have fun with her peers.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 9, 2023 12:14 PM |
Evans pushing Alcaraz in Shanghai and taking a set off him at the US Open isn't too strange when all his best results have been on hard courts. Any other surface, though, and Carlos would trounce him.

Venus Williams is surprisingly reversing her retirement from playing doubles tennis to partner three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur. The 14-time women's doubles champion has not played alongside anyone for over a year since Serena retired from the sport after the 2022 US Open.
She also received a wildcard for singles as well.
This is for the Jasmin Open in Tunisia.

Wow, Dimitrov beat Alcaraz, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Did anyone watch the match? I'm wondering how Dimitrov won. Was he playing in the zone, or did Alcaraz have an off day? Or maybe a combination of both?
by Anonymous | reply 105 | October 11, 2023 1:45 PM |
Hi r105. I was distractedly watching the last set while I was at work, and it looked like Dimitrov was in superlative form and Alcaraz was having an off day. The commentators seemed to be saying more or less the same thing.
What few rallies I saw were actually quite breathtaking—Alcaraz, even on an off day, is not going to give any less than 100%, but Dimitrov wasn't having that today.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | October 11, 2023 2:47 PM |
R105, my take: Dimitrov had a good game plan and was very aggressive. When Alcaraz isn’t in charge, when he has to be reactive, he’s noticeably less happy and makes more mistakes.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | October 11, 2023 3:09 PM |
R107, I believe that's how Sinner beat Alcaraz recently, by being extra aggressive and keeping Alcaraz more on his back foot. Of course, so much easier said than done, but that seems to be the game plan to use against Alcaraz
by Anonymous | reply 108 | October 11, 2023 3:39 PM |

You could make a decent case for Rublev, Shelton, Dimitrov, Korda, Humbert, Jarry, or Hubie winning the whole thing. Marozsan would be the only genuine 'shock'. It's genuinely wide open.

R113 Rublev won today.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | October 11, 2023 5:51 PM |
R112, I think another factor is all the surge in media hype after Alcaraz won Wimbledon. Some people were already proclaiming that he stood a chance of breaking Djokovic's record of 24 GS titles. Of course Alcaraz is hugely talented and unbelievably mature for his age, but he's won only two GSs to date so I think it was way, way too premature to be talking about breaking Djokovic's record. I wonder now if all that media hype was adding too much pressure on him. After all, he's still so young, only 20 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | October 11, 2023 6:19 PM |

Nah, I would take how players perform in tournaments outside of slams with a big pinch of salt. Top players are often paid large sums simply to appear but don't necessarily want to play - and therefore may not be as competitive or 'on' as they would be in a slam.

Yes but the best looking lesbian of them all is and will always be Sebastian Korda.

God shorter hair on Seb and he'd be so good looking. I know he wears the headband because it was one of his golfer sister's - yeah that sounds weird - but he is doing it as some tribute to her.
Where is Jensen Brooksby? Is he suspended?

About Seb's headband, did his sister die? or is just a general tribute because... he's weird?
Yay emo woobie Ruby!! He puts little snippets from his winning matches in his Instagram stories. Awww. (or maybe they all do - he's the only player I follow)

Hubie clinically disposes of Korda to reach the Final. He's having a bit of a late season charge
If he wins the final he's within touching distance of making the ATP Finals - especially considering that Daddy and The Brat are flopping hard atm.

Sadly, Hubie isn't hawt.

No, but he's sweet, charming, flirtacious, and quirky, which is nice change from the arrogant jocks from around the world that represent most of the ATP. He could be the first player to come out in the future. Fingers crossed.

All eye candy about Giron of the great ass should be from the back.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | October 17, 2023 6:59 AM |
My God, Cameron Norrie's backhand is so hideous: he strikes it with two hands but the hands don't pivot, it feels like both hands are locked in a cast and he's just moving the cast somehow. OTOH I think the best looking backhand right now, might be Seb Korda's: he strikes it like it was done in the late 90s early noughties. Smooth yet powerfull, almost flat with a tiny bit of spin for security, gorgeous follow through.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | October 17, 2023 11:25 AM |
Tiafoe has had a really disappointing fall swing.
Losing to Karasev in the first round? Not something that should be happening if he is, as he likes to think, a grand slam contender.

Well, I imagine Foe will dig deep to test himself. This wasn’t the year he expected for himself after the 2022 USO.
He wants to contend at majors. He’s got a lot of competitive fire.
Next year will be determinative.
Is he going to be the guy who occasionally makes a thrilling run or is he something more?

I'm also rooting for Daddy, of course, and Tommy, Casper, and Mopsy to get to the QFs. Tiafoe and Hurkacz already out of the running.
It's a pretty wild scramble out of the top 3. Or really out of the top 1. Retire Djoko. You and your "tonics" have it wrapped up. Aren't you bored?

Was watching a bit of Shelton-Paul - they hit the crap out of the ball, and Shelton's serve omg. And refreshingly, Shelton doesn't grunt when he hits the ball, or at least not much. Was that always a thing? I watched many years ago (Borg-McEnroe era) and I don't remember it.
Anyhow, my heart breaks for FAA, and to a lesser extent, Fritz. Oh well, there will always be ups and down - and headcases. Don't know what's going on with them. It's like Fritz and Tiafoe are in a contest to see who can drop in the rankings the fastest. Bye bye ATP finals, Daddy.

Rune blew a break lead in one set with Carlos in the Wimbledon qf and he's not been the same since. What's he won - 3 matches since then? I didn't see this coming. Becker can whip him up.

So the girls' WTA final is set, with Muchova withdrawing: 1 Sabalenka; 2 Swiatek; 3 Gauff; 4 Rybakina; 5 Pegula; 6 Jabeur; 7 Vondrousova; 8 Sakkari (subs Krejciova and Keys)
I'll go for Rybakina and Swiatek in the final - with Rybakina winning! (probably just wishful thinking)

Poor Maddie Keys has lost two of her round robin matches already.
This is for the WTA Elite Trophy which is for the 2nd tier of top players. The groups are:
Krejcikova, Linette, Kasatkina
Haddad Maia, Keys, Garcia
Peppa Pig, Zheng, Vekic
Zhu (WC), Kudermetova, Samsonova.
Winner of each goes to the semifinals. Keys can only progress now if Garcia beats Haddad Maia in 2 sets and then it comes down to number of games won/lost.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | October 25, 2023 8:42 AM |
No, scratch the last bit, I think Keys is out completely (am a bit confused).

by Anonymous | reply 344 | October 25, 2023 11:22 AM |
Next week, R344.
La Monf is on an eleventh-hour career tear, knocking out Altmaier in straights 6-4, 6-4 in Vienna.
U-Goat Humbert squeaks out a third-set tiebreak win over Giron in Basel.

Sinner still strikes me as The Boy Who Fell to Earth. On the court there is just something not quite of this world about him, as if he's channeled through aliens with sinister intent. The odd movement and expression seems synthetic somehow.

Entertaining match between Sinner and Shelton today, with Sinner winning 7-6(2), 7-5. Sinner is only a year older than Shelton but, in my opinion, plays with so much more maturity and composure.

R368 She's a good kid. A Paralympic tennis player posted about how she paid for their expenses when they couldn't afford to play. The prize money for this tournament is good (the winner will get over half a million dollars) so I'd definitely like someone like Kasatkina to take it.
What to look out for next:
The winner of the Garcia-Haddad Maia match goes through to the semifinals.
Same with the winner of the Zheng-Peppa match.
Samsonova-Kudermetova - if Samsonova wins, she's through. If Kudermetova wins, Chinese wild card Lin Zhu is through.

R411 Vondrousova is the ho. Iga is the outcast (didn't get together with the other gals to coordinate - she's supposed to text one of the head girls and see what's up but she doesn't have their numbers - sad).
The one who looks most like Caitlyn (from a distance, of course) = Aryna. And I say that with love! Whack those serves in and wipe 'em out girl!
For me, I'd give the pageant crown to Elena Rybakina with Iga as runner up. Probably Ons as Miss Congeniality.

remember that shit Novaxx pulled on Carlos in Cincy - the whole bird with a broken wing in the first set to get Carlos thinking he he had the whole thing wrapped up and so Carlos starts playing over-confidently and makes stupid errors after that? And then Novaxx drinks some of his special potion and chants to the silly little battery he wears taped to his chest, ands bingo, he's got Carlos dumbfounded. God I despise Novaxx's eastern european ethics.

Anyway even though he's the GOAT, he's not the most beloved so HAHAHA. I don't even care BOO HOO. I'm going to write Carlos a letter to tell him the real truth about Novaxx. I'm going to send him my entire Burn Book that I've documented for 10 years.

Murray, after today's loss, is 0-6 against him. There have been some very close matches between the two.
It's got to be a mind fuck. He's beaten Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, all the greats, past grand slam champ, all of it, and he can not, can not, can't be De Minauer, a very competent top player. No shame, but I imagine his own head games are amazing in this matchup.

“I'm happy that I was able to stay focused tonight, overcome the conditions, and play well,” the world No. 1 wrote after a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari. “I have to say though that I am very disappointed with the WTA and the experience so far at the WTA Finals. As I said in my press conference tonight, as a player I really feel disrespected by the WTA. I think most of us do. This is not the level of organization we expect for the Finals.
“To be honest, I don't feel safe moving on this court a lot of the time, the bounce is not consistent at all, and we weren't able to practice on this court until yesterday for the first time. It's just not acceptable to me with so much on the line and so much at stake.”

[quote]The discussions in China culminated with a three-page, single-spaced letter sent on October 5 and signed by Sabalenka and 20 other leading players, including Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, the last two Wimbledon champions, and Ons Jabeur, a three-time Grand Slam finalist. The players requested immediate consideration of their needs for higher pay, a more flexible schedule that is more physically and mentally sustainable, expanded childcare and official representation on the WTA Players Council from their own, independent player organization, the nascent Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which Novak Djokovic co-founded in 2020.
[quote]Paula Wolecka, a spokesperson for Iga Swiatek, the world No 2, and four-time Grand Slam champion, confirmed Monday that Swiatek had sent her own letter to the WTA leadership, and was part of a “united front here in wishing for a real change.”

Grampy Gasquet announces that he'll retire at next year's Roland Garros. I will really miss him. He perhaps never achieved his potential, but he has a beautiful, unique game and perhaps the most stylish one-handed backhand in history.
Cocaine kisses aside, he's also one of the nicest, most sporting players of the modern era - you can tell that in his final years he's just played for a genuine love of the game, without the torture of trying to regain past glories that's come with Murray.
Here's a reminder of Gasquet in his twinky prime.

Losing to Medvedev at the US Open was certainly not disgraceful, if disappointing, nor was it to lose at the hands of Sinner, but then to lose at the hands of (not so) Young Grigor and now journeyman Saffiullin? It looks like Carlos insists on maintaining Nadal's legacy of going out with a wimp at the tail end of the season.

I'm watching the wta finals and the conditions look bad. First of all, the heat and humidity is insane so the players are sweating buckets and look out of it, and secondly, the court was hastily constructed and looks uneven so there are some bad bounces.
There have been quite a few bagels and breadsticks. Jabeur, Vondrousova and Sakkari don't look competitive at all.

Pegula-Sakkari is going to be a dead rubber because Pegula is through and Sakkari out regardless. So they will mostly be playing for the money ($198,000 plus 125 ranking points for each round-robin win).
I really wonder how the psychology of that works. I did notice that Kudermetova was super keen to win her dead rubber match for the money last week but would top players - especially heiress Pegula - care less about winning a dead rubber match for the money? Maybe the competitiveness kicks in too.

[quote] SheHulk has a mouth on her doesn't she, love this gal, just tells it like it is.
I hope she’ll have as much of a mouth on her to protest against the WTA tour finals going to Saudi Arabia next year. Rumour has it (see the latest issue of the Tennis Podcast) that Cancun was agreed on at the last minute after the powers that be backtracked after facing huge opposition within the WTA (Navratilova and Evert on the front line). Apparently they were ready to take the WTA finals to Saudi Arabia this year.
I suspect, though, that Sabalenka wouldn’t be so vocally against the move if it comes to that. Moolah is moolah, after all, which is the only thing professional athletes should be interested in. Not politics, not wars, just money.

I agree about Sabalenka - my take on her is that she'll be about the money first and foremost. However, I think it's a little sad to only care about money. There is a lot more to human life than just that. I myself have refused to do certain things out of conscience even though I could have made a lot of money from it.

If Swiatek wins the match her HtH will be 9-1 against Gauff, getting into Serena-Sharapova style territory (20-3). It's not over yet but Gauff is giving her too many high balls. As a clay-courter Swiatek loves those, you can't give her time.
