Benefits of Smoking Cigarettes

1. Smoking cigarettes is said to help significantly reduce stress, help people relax, concentrate, and boost mental strength. it also acts as an antidepressant. It is one of the main reasons why people would not quit smoking. They think they would not be able to handle the pressure from work or family if they quit. Sometimes, in challenging situations, smokers often choose cigarettes to calm their nerves and help them make a decision. Although cigarettes clouds their lungs, their minds are clearer.

2. Smoking is a good way to control hyper-tension. The smoke from cigarettes tightens the blood vessels in the throat and airways and causes a drop in blood pres-sure. Therefore there are little to no chances of developing chronic high blood pressure. Smoking cigarettes can lower your risk of developing this condition by about 30%.

3. Smoking cigarettes is also a good way to reduce the possibility of becoming obese. In the 1920s, cigarette companies sold their product to women by advertising cigarettes as a "great way to lose weight". But that does not mean that one should smoke only to lose weight. Nicotine is said to help control weight by reducing an individual's appetite and hunger.

4. Smoking is an icebreaker. Some people rely on smoking to socialize with friends. Smoking can be seen as a 'condition' to be accepted in a friend group. So, it is easier for some people, who smoke, to feel like they belong to a group. They need cigarettes to fit in.

5. Diseases like Parkinson's are significantly reduced or managed when smoking. According to studies, there is a very low rate of Parkinson's disease in smokers compared to non-smokers. This effect is due to the nicotine present in cigarettes. Smoking reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease in smokers by 41%.

I found that they eased my OCD. I don't smoke actual cigarettes anymore, but I do still use nicotine from reduced harm products. It doesn't make the symptoms go away, but ritualistic and counting behaviors definitely ease when I have nicotine in my system.

Unless this is parody post OP. Smoking was a big deal in the gay community thru the 80's 90's and before. I can't tell you how many guys I met in bars lighting their smokes. I haven't smoked in years but can see the appeal. It's a very social thing.

Thank you OP! I took up smoking during the pandemic after a 25 year hiatus. I feel bad about it sometimes and intend to quit at some point. But I also was thinking, well, it allows me to take little breaks throughout the day. My life is very monotonous right now and filled with obligations and chores and not a lot of joy or fun. The cigs provide a little light relief.

Also my Chinese Taoist acupuncturist told me that smoking does have some beneficial soothing properties, and that it is often the repression of emotions, which smoking can be a symptom of, that causes lung cancer rather than the smoking itself. She told me not to worry about it and that it will fall away when I'm ready.

by Anonymousreply 5October 4, 2023 2:40 AM

[quote]2. Smoking is a good way to control hyper-tension. The smoke from cigarettes tightens the blood vessels in the throat and airways and causes a drop in blood pres-sure.

Don't forget that inhaling the smoke deep into your lungs kills lung cancer cells by depriving them of oxygen.

An added benefit is that it helps clear the lungs in the morning by coughing to expel phlegm.

by Anonymousreply 6October 4, 2023 2:42 AM

Back in my nightclubbing days, smoking was certainly cheaper than drinking or taking drugs. I could smoke a bit and dance for hours.

And when one is young any sexy, smoking goes very well with SEX.

Smoking and driving is a pleasure as is smoking and watching movies. Particularly old movies.

Well, that's all in the past.

R10 also explains why our society is so insane now since no one smokes hardly anymore. These Psychos need to chill out and have a cigarette.

by Anonymousreply 15October 4, 2023 2:59 AM

Smokers are basically driven underground now and shamed by society, but weed which causes lots of mental illnesses is really socially acceptable now… along with alcohol, which also causes lots of mental illness and disease and lots of car accidents. Weird.

R16 is correct. The tobacco companies call this “denormalization” and they are very concerned about it.

And just sitting there smoking was like meditation.

Tobacco causes a lot of health issues, but it has also surely prevented a lot of nervous breakdowns?

Organic tobacco - if it exists - would be awesome.

R33. My son in law was diagnosed as schizoaffective in his mid-20s. Since everyone on his mother’s side has some form of mental illness, it is doubtful his daily cannabis use CAUSED the schizoaffective disorder, but his psychiatrist was convinced that it exacerbated it (he was eventually hospitalized involuntarily after waving down highway police; he was convinced people were out to get him—classic paranoia). He is a tech geek, so he retired from Google with 5M by thirty. He no longer uses pot, but aspects of the schizoaffective disorder remain (he’s 48), as well as undiagnosed but obvious spectrum elements. He’ll never be on the streets and is not dangerous, but lives a very narrow life. His sister has Bipolar 1, smokes or consumes pit virtually everyday, has no job (lives off her real estate investments—except when she asks her daddy for money, since she can’t seem to manage her “business,” and sends me abusive texts saying I’m unfairly controlling her dad’s money—he has Alzheimer’s and I have POA). I sent her 50,000 and told her never to contact us for money again.

I’m not a prude—my mom was an alcoholic and I don’t the fact that it was legal made her use of it anymore “healthy,” but I’m not convinced marijuana is as harmless as many would have us think.

You realize there are actually healthy ways to deal with stress, right? Go listen to some music or watch a film

by Anonymousreply 72October 4, 2023 11:09 PM

I haven't smoked in over two decades. Still think about it constantly, especially when suffering physical pain. Often notice that I've got my two "smoking" fingers together as if holding an imaginary cigarette, sometimes bringing them to my mouth.

A friend smokes imaginary cigarettes every morning on the way to work. Like me, they were forced to give up due to health reasons.

An older friend who also quit ages ago would kill for a smoke. They use oxygen at least once a day.

Nicotine is a helluva drug, but the ritual of smoking holds great power, too. Something the patches can't match.

I truly envy those people who make it to their 90s smoking at least a pack a day without showing any signs of it affecting them.

As to pot, most people I know who use it suffer no ill effects, but a heavy user I grew up with now has both schizophrenia and bipolar. With no family history, although he'd always been a bit different. His life is pretty much over as he hasn't been able to live independently for years.

by Anonymousreply 73October 4, 2023 11:26 PM

I quit 16 years ago and if I didn't have emphysema and could afford the damn things I would have gone back. I have terrible muscle spasms which I didn't have when I smoked because smoking relaxes your muscles. It also helps to keep you from getting constipated.

I am in my 70's and am under as much stress now as I was in my 30's and want a cigarette every day. When I smoked it used to make me want to get up as soon as I woke up so I could have a cigarette but now I lie in bed for hours which I hate. I hate that I miss it so much and that it did have the benefits that it has.

by Anonymousreply 74October 4, 2023 11:34 PM

(for me the 80s) However, I have a medical card or have lived in recreationally legal states and I know to research the terpines of everything before I use it. I can tailor my strain to suit the occasion or my mood. Weed is way more sophisticated now. I don't know many people who just smoke whatever marijuana they can get their hands on. by Anonymousreply 117October 6, 2023 2:32 PM

Yes, R116. Smoking really enhances one's quality of life. Show me a man who doesn't want to have erectile dysfunction.

by Anonymousreply 118October 6, 2023 3:26 PM

Amazing how the thinking of many smokers and ex-smokers is distorted by their addiction. They obsess about the pleasures of smoking. It's like it never occurred to them that people who have never smoked a single cigarette experience pleasure all the time.

by Anonymousreply 119October 6, 2023 3:42 PM

R119 oh yeah!? The world is so pleasurable and happy now… yeah sure

by Anonymousreply 120October 6, 2023 3:49 PM

Yeah, R120, the pleasure of eating great food at a restaurant without the smoke from some nicotine addict drifting in to ruin your meal.

by Anonymousreply 121October 6, 2023 4:03 PM

Like the other poster above, I too do not smoke but don't understand the clenching pisspotery around smoking.

For what it's worth, my mom's been smoking for 50 years now and never gets a cold. We think it's because she has lungs of steel that could withstand decades of smoking rather than smoking preventing colds, but who knows.

by Anonymousreply 122October 6, 2023 4:29 PM

[quote] Every pothead stoner I’ve ever met has extreme anger issues when they’re not high. It seems like eventually their body gets used to the pot and it stops working and their anger gets worse. Just something I’ve noticed.

Same here R114. They are as angry as drunks and meth heads.

by Anonymousreply 123October 6, 2023 4:30 PM

R121 so your entire sense of pleasure is based on avoiding cigarette smoke?!?

by Anonymousreply 124October 6, 2023 4:42 PM

No way, R123. A pot head can be whiny, grouchy and annoying.

But a pothead is not gonna be a psychopath like a drunk or a tweaker. Come on.

Surprised no one has mentioned this advantage.

You're right, R122. Smoking isn't so bad.

Smokers are like the homeless: they never have any clue how bad they smell

I loved smoking too. Agree that it was great for my social (and sex) life - all the smokers hung out and bonded over it. Now it's been made extremely expensive in my country and our PM has even announced that he'll be phasing in an outright ban of it like NZ is doing. I have replaced it with alcohol which is probably not much better - that's the thing about addictions, people just seem to replace one with another. Food, vaping, alcohol, pills..

by Anonymousreply 134October 6, 2023 9:26 PM

This thread astonishes me. I'm not clutching my pearls--I'm looking at the floor where they all scattered when I grabbed my choker in a paroxysm of unbridled HORROR!

I smoked for 10 years and quit mid-90s. Best thing I ever did. My body thanks me every day.

by Anonymousreply 135October 6, 2023 9:28 PM

R135 A great decision.

I took up smoking in college because all my friends smoked. After college I smoked for about a year, then one day on an impulse I just decided to quit cold turkey. That was 1983. I haven't smoked since. That was 40 years ago. A close friend of mien kept saying he would quit too, but never did. He finally quit 2 years ago, when he was diagnosed with emphysema.

by Anonymousreply 136October 6, 2023 9:41 PM

If you're diagnosed with Small Cell lung cancer, you'll be dead within 5 months.

So there's that.

by Anonymousreply 137October 6, 2023 9:43 PM

A next door neighbor died at age 49 from COPD. He was always hanging out on the stoop and smoking.

by Anonymousreply 138October 6, 2023 9:46 PM

R136, many thanks for your kind words. I am a little (maybe a lot!) self-righteous about smoking, but the emphysema that took your friend's life also killed a longtime smoking family member of mine. Terrible, terrible disease. Imagine suffocating to death!

by Anonymousreply 139October 6, 2023 10:09 PM

At least most smokers go away from the crowd to light up. But some will just start puffing away at the the table if outside without asking. Okay, you're welcome to impact on your own health, but not mine. I never did that when I smoked, always left the non-smokers to go puff. Most of them might have joined me, but manners.

People find comfort in food, shopping, sex, gambling, drugs and drinking. Smoking is just one of those things.

by Anonymousreply 140October 6, 2023 11:26 PM

R140 is probably huffing poppers and drinking mimosas by the gallon. She probably pollutes our shared world with her gas powered car, but goes into a performative coughing fit whenever she catches a whiff of ciggy smoke once every 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 141October 7, 2023 1:47 AM

R117 That’s not what I said at all. You sound like an angry stoner.

by Anonymousreply 142October 7, 2023 3:05 AM

Dumbass OP, smoking causes hypertension. It doesn’t prevent it. It also causes atherosclerosis. In addition to lung cancer, smoking also increases your risk of developing every other kind of cancer. Not to mention emphysema and COPD.

by Anonymousreply 143October 7, 2023 3:14 AM

[quote] Smoking cigarettes is also a good way to reduce the possibility of becoming obese.

So is chemotherapy.

by Anonymousreply 144October 7, 2023 3:22 AM

I believe this thread was funded by Philip Morris.

I also believe that a number of ex-smokers have purchased a pack after entering the thread.

by Anonymousreply 145October 7, 2023 4:59 AM

Wrong on all counts, r141.

Hit a nerve of yours, though. You rude fuck. I loved to smoke but never subjected non-smokers to it.

Manners, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 146October 7, 2023 10:42 AM

One of the down side to smoking is the much higher risk of ED. So on top of $10 a pack you will need an early script for Viagra. But don’t worry V or not with smoking so many people are not going to want to be around you because if that smoke smell.

So unless it’s black out night at the baths your chances of needing that V is significantly less than a non tobacco addicts will be all else equal.

Same with a job interview. It lessens your chances to be hired because people do generally not want to hire smokers for a variety of social and health reasons.

Smoking it’s the gift that keeps on giving,.

by Anonymousreply 147October 7, 2023 10:56 AM

[quote] Same with a job interview. It lessens your chances to be hired because people do generally not want to hire smokers for a variety of social and health reasons.

I won’t hire smokers because they have to take constant breaks from their work to feed their addiction.

That and they stink too, of course.

I don’t even have to ask if they smoke. Their smell gives them away.

by Anonymousreply 148October 7, 2023 12:32 PM

The major reason smoking "relaxes" a committed smoker is because they're ADDICTED to nicotine. They get their fix and the anxiety turns to relaxation.

by Anonymousreply 149October 7, 2023 2:06 PM

smoking menthol cigarettes always felt great when I was coming down with a cold and sore throat

by Anonymousreply 150October 8, 2023 8:48 PM

[quote]4. Smoking finds those it most annoys. I am making people suffer to be around me and that brings me joy

So smoking is like people who blast music outside.

by Anonymousreply 151October 8, 2023 9:49 PM

I enjoyed smoking for many years and particularly when I lived in Europe. But eventually that shit starts to catch up with you.

I still miss it sometimes, but I don't miss the nasty breath, the smell on the clothes and the lung infections.

by Anonymousreply 152October 8, 2023 10:28 PM

All the scolds informing us that smoking is very bad are dim bulbs.

by Anonymousreply 153October 9, 2023 5:08 AM

^^^ Sure, trollina.

by Anonymousreply 154October 9, 2023 5:22 AM

All the smokers insisting that they don’t really stink are deluded idiots

by Anonymousreply 155October 9, 2023 6:27 AM

R153, posts like the following don't seem like clever, sarcastic parody comments. The person seems sincere (or is trolling to get a rise out of people).

[quote]Like the other poster above, I too do not smoke but don't understand the clenching pisspotery around smoking. For what it's worth, my mom's been smoking for 50 years now and never gets a cold. Yeah, most of us don't feel like doing the parody thing, R157. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 158October 9, 2023 8:25 PM

If someone is depressed or trying to get through a crisis, lung cancer or emphysema seem a remote possibility if smoking helps them refrain from killing themselves or flipping out.

Visit a mental health facility and you'll see quite a few people smoking outside or in the designated areas.

by Anonymousreply 159October 10, 2023 11:58 AM

R159

Yes as posted earlier in this thread there is lots of data showing more mental illness among tobacco addicts.

So seeing more smoking outside a mental health facility should surprise no one.

But most sane people would not suggest tobacco as a first line treatment for serious mental health problems as you have. An interesting suggestion :-)

by Anonymousreply 160October 10, 2023 12:06 PM

I didn't intend it to be interpreted as a first-line treatment, just something to help them hang in there. If they're in a MH facility they are likely utilising meds, therapy and/or group therapy/occupational therapy.

by Anonymousreply 161October 10, 2023 12:10 PM

R161

Next time before posting such insightful mental health advice you might want to do a search on how tobacco use interferes with anti psychotic drugs.

by Anonymousreply 162October 10, 2023 12:44 PM

I mean for christsakes, if you already have one foot in the grave

by Anonymousreply 163October 11, 2023 12:11 AM

I have an elderly neighbor in his mid 70s, he has emphysema, uses an oxygen machine, and last year he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He's just completed radiation therapy and yet he still hasn't stopped smoking. He says that each time he tries to stop he feels like he's going to go mad. I guess if you've been smoking about 60 years, you have to keep doing it.

by Anonymousreply 164October 11, 2023 1:51 AM

R164

It’s a real addiction no different than H, coke, crack, meth, etc. quitting is not easy.

by Anonymousreply 165October 11, 2023 10:04 AM

that’s what I have been hearing, also

by Anonymousreply 166October 11, 2023 7:09 PM

R158 is another dim bulb who ruins parody threads. Deal with it!

by Anonymousreply 167October 11, 2023 7:37 PM

There is so much stupid on internet forums how can anyone tell when it’s parody and not just more stupid,

by Anonymousreply 168October 11, 2023 8:06 PM

S.T. Dupont lighters and their distinctive "PING" when opening and closing them. I loved it even though I have never smoked.
