Box office repellents

Margot Robbie (Barbie was marketing).

by Anonymousreply 25October 2, 2023 1:09 AM

Ezra Miller. Killed the Harry Potter and DC cinematic universes in the space of about 2 years

by Anonymousreply 1October 1, 2023 2:29 AM

Box office poison Timothée Chalamet owns this thread.

Everything he's been in has been a box office bomb. Here's the proof:

Ryan Gosling (Barbie was marketing).

Oh god is White Belt Man still posting here?

by Anonymousreply 4October 1, 2023 2:31 AM

r2, no, Dune was a big hit, CMBYN made money too

by Anonymousreply 5October 1, 2023 2:31 AM

John Travolta makes a lot of B-pictures now. Like Burt Reynolds or Bruce Willis before him.

by Anonymousreply 6October 1, 2023 2:44 AM

R5 - Dune was a hit because of diehard Dune fans who had waited decades for the remake.

Consumers watched Dune in spite of Chalamet being cast in it - not because of him being in it. They would have flocked to see Dune even if Britney Spears was in it.

CMBYN made $18 million dollars worldwide and cost $3.5 million dollars to make so yes you are correct about that. $18 million is hardly something to crow about though don't you think?

All his other films have been box office bombs. Every single one. The numbers don't lie.

by Anonymousreply 7October 1, 2023 2:47 AM

Bradley Cooper has had some hits and some misses so it’s not like he’s putting butts on seats every single time.

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2023 2:48 AM

Christian Bale

by Anonymousreply 9October 1, 2023 2:50 AM

The one I’m really confused with is Chris Hemsworth. Handsome family man and he doesn’t get too political so it’s strange.

"Consumers watched Dune in spite of Chalamet being cast in it - not because of him being in it. They would have flocked to see Dune even if Britney Spears was in it."

Maybe, but you said everything he was in bombed and that's not true. And CMBYN did not make $18 million worldwide. That's the domestic gross. Worldwide it made over $40 mil

Yes, OP, she repelled a billion dollars.

by Anonymousreply 12October 1, 2023 2:59 AM

Julia Roberts . . . What was her last hit movie?

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2023 2:59 AM

r10 Honestly I don't think in most cases an actor being in a film influences people one way or the other anymore. there aren't really any "A-list actors" these days that people will go pay just to see them. A movies success is more down to buzz and word of mouth than anything else. I said Ezra Miller up thread but I doubt very much 98% of the worldwide movie going public know what a freak he is. Him being in two major franchises that crashed was more a (happy) coincidence of WB imploding, bad direction, bad writing, runaway budgets, declining public interest and better competition than anything else.

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2023 3:04 AM

R8, isn’t that basically every actor working right now, except Leonardo DiCaprio?

Cooper has a very respectable track record at the box office, and it’s not primarily because of franchises. That’s about as good as a Hollywood star can expect right now.

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2023 3:05 AM

R14, Many years ago, a movie starring Clara Bow would have the theaters packed at multiple daily showings day after day.

What more modern day star even came close to doing that?

Maybe John Wayne.

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2023 3:12 AM

Joan Crawford

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2023 3:27 AM

I’m embarrassed for you, OP. And the correct term is box office poison.

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2023 3:27 AM

r16 People used to say The Rock and Tom Cruise but they've both had pretty big stumbles this year. Only one that really leaps to mind that's still not had a really big fail is Leo but I'd say its more down to the fact he's pretty picky with roles and directors than actual star power

by Anonymousreply 19October 1, 2023 3:33 AM

Leo has had a VERY solid career, picks the right projects & only works with the best directors (and repeatedly; i.e. Scorsese, Tarantino, Nolan etc]

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2023 3:54 AM

Box office poisson? I believe that's when you eat a can of sardines at the movies. Preferably at a movie theater in France.

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2023 4:18 AM

Nicole Kidman owns this thread.

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2023 4:35 AM

DiCaprio I refuse to watch in anything. I just regret Scorsese's obsession with the guy making me miss so many of his later films.

Also Sean Penn.

On the other hand I never see anything with The Rock types simply because I don't watch that genre of films. Nothing to do with the actor.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2023 5:27 AM

Jennifer Lawrence

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2023 7:21 PM

I’m shocked - Jessica Chastain
