Backups
How often do you back up electronic devices like your phone, iPad, laptop or hard drives?
What would happen if you lost your device?
Would you have a recent back up to restore all your information or would you have lost all your personal info and have to begin again from scratch?

MacBook Pro gets backed up hourly to two different servers on my local network; iPhone and iPad get backed up to iCloud every couple of days when charging.

I have an iMac w/an app called Time Machine. You plug in an external drive (I guess you could do it internally, as well) and it backs up the computer several times per day.
On top of that, I back up my important stuff 1X per week on large-capacity USB drives.
I am inching towards putting everything in the cloud. It will cost ~ $15 per month to store what I need to store.

Gee you're on the ball R1. Well done. I just realized I haven't backed anything up for some years and I would be totally fucked if I lost any of my devices or had a computer crash. - which inspired me to post the thread to see if anyone else is as lazy as I am.

You guys know that anything you put in "the cloud" becomes the property of that cloud service provider right?
If you don't mind that then cloud backups are a great idea.

I lost my iPhone recently- “lost” as I eventually found it.
But for about twelve hours I was completely paralysed and scarily aware of how much I relyon my phone.
Luckily I back up to the cloud regularly. But I live in a cashless country so was completely stuck that day, which, being Sunday, meant that support options were minimal.

R4 what you say is not so cut-and-dried. I use iCloud and according to Apple's terms of service, the user retains copyright of the content uploaded. In addition, Apple's only rights to use the content are in conjunction with the cloud service; example, sharing photographs that the user willingly decides to make public. Maybe YMMV with Google or other services.

Same here. The back up to the cloud is immediate. Stuff on my laptop I've downloaded is more like twice a year to my external hard drive.

I back up to a portable external drive 2 or 3 times a year. Most of my files and photos of any importance exist on Google Drive and various other Google back ups. I have the external drive so use it when o think to do, just as an added layer of protection.
Aside from many thousands of photos that are a sort of visual diary, there's not much I.might lose that would put me in a bad way.

Some of you are way behind the times. Don't you have tech help at work, for example?
Backs are done continuously every day. And at work there are back ups of the back up.
At home, you simply install back up software and your devices are backed up every day at the latest. On Mac, Time Machine does it more often than that.
My personal computers are backed up to external hard drives. I don't have a RAID. So if there is a house fire, I would lose everything. Therefore, at least once a month a bring a hard drive of my own home from work and back up my personal computers to that hard hard drive, and then deposit it back at work. so the most I could lose is 4 weeks. not 20 years.
Archives of important media are backed up at home on hard drives, and these are duplicated on hard drives off site. Music, movies and tv, photos.
I only use cloud to back up my iPhones. And I don't keep anything really on my iPhones.
I always have 2 iPhones. My latest purchase and my last purchase. The last purchase serves in a pinch if my latest purchase goes missing or is forgotten somewhere. This happens more often than one would expect. Then I have another good phone ready as the back up.

I have iCloud and I don’t know how often but it backs up my phone when I need it. It saved my ass a few months ago when my phone broke.

What / who are you talking about? People are saying they use the cloud, which would solve your issue with "what if there's a house fire?" The rest of your backup system makes sense, to you, I'm sure. But it sounds convoluted, IMO.

Well I don't want to use the cloud for my media. OK for the phone. Yeah convoluted. But if you're in the know tell me who offers 60 TB cloud storage for a reasonable fee. Thanks.

I don't know what backups are. But I agree that they should all be electronic and able to be shut or turned off (?).
