Who is going to buy this crap?

The lack of color doesn't surprise - plenty of lines at all levels that are like that.
This is like the halfway point between Restoration Hardware and Target - many of these items look similar to things that are at RH and/or Target. I guess the point would be if you DO like anything, what is the quality. It all looks boring AF thrown together and photographed as they chose to, but the point, IMO, would be if you like any individual pieces that you could incorporate into your own home and personal stuff.

Day late and a dollar short. Typical of gapinc. H and M has had a home range for years. I purchased a few things from H and M home.

Who’s going to buy it?
Wilma Flintstone.

The accent chairs are very dorm-y. Not all, but a lot of them.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 1, 2023 12:05 AM |
I wouldn't say it's ugly, just bland and overpriced. I would assume the same basic white people who shop at Crate and Barrel will be the market for this.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 1, 2023 12:10 AM |
Can you imagine dusting all that shit? Just look at it. It's an asthmatic's nightmare.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 1, 2023 12:10 AM |
Everything looks pretty basic.
I like the Maui Accent Chair and Tuscon Lounge Chair, but they're basically a play on mid-Century Swedish, right? My grandparents had a couple of those, and I liked them.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 1, 2023 12:10 AM |
“Who’s going to buy this crap?” The same people that think West Elm is good furniture.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 1, 2023 12:14 AM |
I agree it's overpriced. Wait for a sale.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 1, 2023 12:15 AM |
Hmm. Well, I don't hate *all* of it. But, a lot of it is just not my style. The living room chairs remind me a bit of early West Elm (with a lot less color), which in their first few years I thought West Elm had a rather feminine aesthetic with lots of curved lines, rounded corners, and overplush / oversizing. That observation aside, at this price point I would not be shopping at Banana Republic for home furniture and decor. I'd be at Restoration Hardware or Room & Board.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 1, 2023 12:45 AM |
I dunno, I need a $3,000 rust-colored velvet sofa that looks cheap even in the photos and will deform horribly after a few weeks of use.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 1, 2023 12:49 AM |
I'm a little surprised they'd do a furniture line because my experience with their clothing is that it's shit quality. If they can't get a pair of pants right, why would I want to trust that their sofa, beds, or chairs will hold up? Hard pass.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 1, 2023 3:26 AM |
Damn that Leanne Ford and Joanna Gaines for spreading this trend. Everything is this fucking ocean of white and beige. It looks just as shitty as World Market or Pier One, but 10x more expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 1, 2023 3:48 AM |
Ugly, overpriced, colorless. Like far too many things these days.

That hanging light looks like a piñata.

Beige, beige, brown, beige and black
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 1, 2023 4:09 AM |
Who are you people who need everything to be some loud, tacky, garish color?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 1, 2023 4:13 AM |
I think there's a space between "loud, tacky, garish" and completely neutral.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 1, 2023 4:28 AM |
Thanks OP, I hate it. It is all exactly as ugly as you say, without exception. And its bland as well.
We dont have Banana Republic here. Clearly I am not missing anything

by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 1, 2023 7:27 AM |
Any designer or brand line tends to look like a bit much or too little if you look at the promotional images. Because nobody will ever buy all of them and put them in the same room like you see in these pictures. (Jonathan Adler is a great example--his stuff gives rooms a fun pop but his catalogues show 30 of his products in a single room)
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 1, 2023 7:46 AM |
Oh, I don’t hate it at all really. I like neutrals and natural materials with some texture. I’d much rather have a beige sofa with a bright yellow throw pillow than a bright yellow sofa with a beige throw pillow. And I like the wood and shell and hammered metal.
But I don’t like that they have a fabric collection and most of the fabrics have less than 4 colors to choose from. And I definitely don’t like that they have a $3,000 arm chair.
I like Room & Board. I like what they sell in their basic floor model fabrics and that they still have a large upholstery collection. I’ve bought from them and just went with the default and opted to not choose a custom fabric.
But I really just miss Storehouse. They had the best furniture that was well made and literally thousands of upholstery fabrics to choose from. Actually it was a little daunting because you were overwhelmed by choices and as soon as you finally did choose a fabric, you had to weight 8 weeks until whatever you ordered was delivered and that was 8 weeks to agonize over whether you really made the right choice.
I think Mitchell and Gold were selling furniture at Storehouse before they officially opened the now closed Mitchell Gold stores. At much more reasonable prices too. MG’s $6,000 sofas were lovely but $6,000 is absurd for a single piece of furniture. There really isn’t anything that needs to be that expensive when you can get a really great piece of furniture somewhere else for 1/4 of the cost.
The Banana Republic stuff is fine. But it’s a little too plain for the price. The last time I looked at a Design Within Reach I thought everything was overpriced but it was still less expensive than this stuff.
But I have more than enough color in the art and accessories I already own. I have to depend on neutrals or my place would be something Betsey Johnson would take one look at and probably say “Too much color”. ☹️
I hate Crate and Barrel, CB2, and West Elm (though I did get a really awesome headboard from West Elm. And I like their jute boucle rugs. I think I’ve had three of those over the years that I had to ditch and replace because I moved a lot and they were always too big or too small for the next place.
Damn I’ve bought a lot of fucking furniture over the years.
Maybe I need an intervention to stop me from buying anything else.

Don't absolutely hate it, but not something I'd ever consider buying either. I'll second and third posters that like Room & Board. I live in SF and they have a nice showroom here. I always see things there I like, but I don't think of myself as having great taste in interior design either.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 1, 2023 9:21 AM |
It looks exactly like Restoration Hardware
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 1, 2023 9:48 AM |
Irredeemably ugly.
OP, you’re correct in your assessment.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 1, 2023 11:53 AM |

I like some of the pieces. Where do our more design forward Dataloungers shop? I'm hearing that Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn are not good and for basic people. Where do you suggest? Antique auctions?

by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 1, 2023 2:54 PM |
R34 me too. Their quality is absolute shit these days. I used to shop there but not anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 1, 2023 2:58 PM |
I remember back in the 1980s when Banana Republic was basically fashioned on a safari themed clothing line.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 1, 2023 3:06 PM |
Drab. I guess they were trying for earth tones and neutrals, but it's all so beige and uninteresting.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 1, 2023 3:07 PM |
I have to think that this washed out look has been pushed by furniture and decor companies in part because it will look old, worn and tired quicker, which will just encourage the public to replace them with yet more poorly made shit all that much sooner.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 1, 2023 3:14 PM |
R32, I can’t say I’m a stellar designer with impeccable taste, but I think Room & Board is always a safe bet, if you want a variety of design brands from one store, Design Within Reach/ Herman Miller. Then if you want a really great selection of new and used designer pieces, Chairish.com. Those are all places with multiple locations nationwide or, like Chairish, online. And then depending where you are, you can probably find great stores that are only in one city, like ABC Carpet in NYC (but I don’t live in NYC and I’ve read they had a turnover during the pandemic and I don’t know what it’s like currently).

Overpriced garbage like Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 1, 2023 4:59 PM |
R40 I have had good luck with Room and Board. I like Arhaus too. DWR is hit or miss for me in terms of quality.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 1, 2023 5:36 PM |
I don't think it's all that bad. It's certainly a strong statement on the look Banana Republic wants to be known for, and in line with their current clothes collection. r37, if you go to the regular BR website you'll notice that they're somewhat going back to the nature/adventure theme for their clothes. They seem to try something similar for furniture, too. The lack of color is probably owed to current furniture fashion and gone in two years.
What I don't understand though is BR's target audience. The furniture are obviously not priced for mid- and low middle class. And looking at the regular clothes website I notice the inclusion of middle aged models - which I totally appreciate. But then I see BR clothes at Costco for $19.99. I cannot reconcile this. Who are they trying to appeal to?

With a name like Banana Republic, it's not surprising that they use exoticism to push their wares. The black person's hand covered in white clay residue.

R32 I dont reckon I qualify as a "design forward" Datalounger, I reckon interior design peaked around 1880 for me, but yeah, antique auctions are a good place to start. Online is great too, I can find stuff online that isnt in any of these furniture chains. It does depend heavily on your own taste/ the look you prefer. If you have niche tastes you can find specialist suppliers online that can provide suitable solutions like this one
