Paris is battling a bedbug infestation on trains and in movie theaters ahead of the Olympics
Dégueulasse.
[quote]"Faced with the scourge of bedbugs, we must act," Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire wrote earlier this week. "I ask the Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne to organize a conference on the fight against invasive species. This is a public health problem where all stakeholders must be brought to the table."
[quote]The French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health and Safety said the recent uptick in bedbug infestations was due to the rise in travel and bedbugs' increasing resistance to insecticides. The cost of bedbug infestations to the nation's health was €83 million in 2019 – €79 million associated with a decline in quality of life, sleep disorders, and the impact to mental health, 1€ million connected with time taken off work, and €3 million toward the cost of physical care.

Bring back DDT. The negative health effects are worth it.

Well, the French don't really wash regularly, you know. Same way across much of the continent.

I've wondered about that. I mean, they're uncut, so you'd think they'd want to wash/clean it on a regular basis.

This debate reminds me of Arabs laughing and cringing at the Westerners for using toilet paper. Their culture, their habits; whatever works for them. For example, you seem to be doing just fine even though you're mutilated down there.

Many people across the continent still follow the old "Friday night is bath night" routine. They have to pretty damn ripe by Friday.

The Future
People will acquire gonorrhea resistant to treatment while laying on a bed being bitten by bedbugs that are resistant to the chems used to eliminate them.

You'd be surprised how many people don't want to clean under the hood.

I have the solution. Eat them. The French eat snails, don't they? The second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much had a sly reference to no toilet paper in the Middle East. Had something to with the right hand. Hitch sneaked the joke past the censor.

A friend just returned from Europe 3 weeks ago and discovered bedbugs. She is totally freaking out. Three to four treatments. And she has to wash everything.

Bedbugs don't have a lot to do with personal hygiene. Having them in the house is no refection on the person. It can happen to anyone.

I got bed bug bites in a Berlin hotel in August, but I didn't bring them home with me.

Bedbugs are the worst. I brought them home about fifteen years ago going back and forth for work between London and NYC. They are a risk to anyone who regularly travels. I was able to get rid of them by hiring an exterminator who specialised in them. It was expensive having to wash and dry clean so many items. It’s true what the article says; it takes a real toll on your sleep and your psychological well-being. To this day, I constantly check the seams on my mattress for any evidence. I also occasionally dream about them. This is only having a mild infestation according to the exterminator. Bedbugs suck.
It completely changed all my travel habits making me uptight. . First thing I do is inspect the hotel mattress. Never use drawers in hotels or leave your suitcase anywhere but the bathroom. All my clothes go in clear bags. If I have to hang something, it stays in the bag. When I come home, my suitcase stays in the garage and everything inside gets washed or dry cleaned. I treat the suitcase after. All hotels have bedbugs, and that’s why it pays to stay at good ones because they usually have regular treatment routines. It’s still the luck of the draw. This is also why I stopped staying at AirBnBs because owners are cheap and don’t use preventative measures. This all sounds OTT, but once you encounter them, you never want to deal with them again.
