And when I say panned don’t get crazy. I mean generally unfavorable or mixed reviews not universal turds like Gigli. Films not so highly regarded initially but have stood up with time and you feel like are good films.

Most of the films in my list actually had good reviews, they just didn’t seem to latch on to the cultural zeitgeist of the moment and be regarded as the best films of their season.

Rules of Attraction (2002) It has a 50 Metascore on IMDB but i think it's much better than that score would indicate. James Van Der Beek is ideally cast as Sean Bateman, and Ian Somerhalder, Faye Dunaway, Swoosie Kurtz, Kip Purdue and Shannyn Sossamon are all excellent.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember liking Bonfire of the Vanities.

Match Point wasn't panned or underrated. It was seen as Woody's comeback (or reurn to great filmmaking after several disasters). It didn't make a lot of money, but his movies never do.

R4 No but it bombed and didn’t receive any major Award nominations. You are correct it did receive great reviews, but was clearly dismissed in every other regard.

Many of his films don’t make a ton of bank at first but usually pick up steam as award season progresses. And to me it’s his best film since his manga opus era in the 70s.

One of Francois Truffaut's favorite American films is Leonard Kastle's only film. Though it received some good reviews when released it was generally dismissed and its reputation grew over time. The Criterion release looks great improving the film's aesthetics.

R5, it was nominated for an Oscar for Original Screenplay, and four Golden Globes, including Best Picure and Supporting Actress. And it's in the top ten of Allen's films as far as box office gross.

R7 oh snap. You are right. You don’t hear much noise about it. When you I discovered it in 2010 I thought it was some little known indie flick with a hood looking cast. The films is so brilliant. And if you have ever been exposed to a cheating dad, brother, or even lover it hits all the right notes. Obviously most don’t go on to kill their mistress but you can see how a narcissist when they are finally left with no choice could do so. They lie constantly and make the female think they are crazy. Scarlett was actually more than a mistress. He was in love with her. But he wouldn’t give up the clout, the finances that the Emily Mortimer family provided. I love dialogue heavy films.

Should read good* looking cast, not hood.

Match Point is a bore .

Though the tale is told with crisp sangfroid and a wonderful twist, there's hardly a scene I haven't seen somewhere else.-Newsweek

The Cell (2000). Tough it was a box office success, it got mixed reviews and currently has a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Personally, I think it's a brilliant and clever thriller both on plot and visuals. I dare to say also that it's one of the few movies where you can see a good performance by J.Lo.

Before The Godfather or The Sopranos. Very funny film with a young DeNiro and an unforgettable Jo Van Fleet

Directed by Alan Arkin. Based on Jules Feiffer's play. It seems prescient

I wanted to like the 25th Hour, but Spike Lee cannot keep the narrative going. It was pretty ridiculous for him to win an Oscar for writing, which he sucks at. He can tell a story visually, though. He needs a good writing partner.

PRETTY POISON (1968) It received good reviews from Pauline Kael and Rex Reed at the time of its release but remained largely unseen. Ironically the NY Times' Vincent Canby panned the film.

DUMPED into theaters as an exploitation cheapie in 1968, this lyrical thriller is a minor American classic. As Dennis, a young man trying to get his feet on the ground after being released from a reformatory, Anthony Perkins, right, gives perhaps his richest performance, certainly his most touching. Just as Perkins was trying to leave behind the juvenile roles that had typecast him, Dennis, a basically decent fellow, is trying to become an adult. But even when he succeeds in hiding his past, he can't resist playing the smart aleck or slipping into a world of make-believe.

The reception for Showgirls was unnecessarily nasty. Its by no means great, but it is incredibly watchable and rewatchable.

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2023 5:31 AM

Agree about Showgirls. It was ok but got labeled a flop because the director and screenwriter had just done Basic Instinct, which was huge.

Hello Dolly! general mediocre reviews and poor BO considering expense but it's infinitely superior to Funny Gir. I've never been able to watch the entire film.
