Does anyone understand the Republican infighting? Is it all to embarrass Kevin McCarthy, create chaos, and make Donald Trump happy?
2023 Government Shutdown
by Anonymous | reply 153 | October 3, 2023 9:04 PM |
I lost the thread on it. The hard-right group want to work on 12 separate bills but don’t want any continuing resolution. They seem to want it their way and to never have to negotiate with Democrats. They want a shutdown.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 30, 2023 4:03 AM |
There's no political capital to be gained for the Republicans. The American people are going to be inconvenienced by this misguided attempt by bozos. A Blue Wave is a-comin'
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 30, 2023 4:05 AM |
They are just following orders from Trump. Good luck with that.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 30, 2023 4:05 AM |
It’s weird. I don’t understand their plans. Maybe a few planes have to crash before they negotiate. They really seem clueless and anti-military now.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 30, 2023 4:08 AM |
That bitch MTG put it in their military bill that the head of DOD (?) would only receive $1 salary due to the Afghanistan withdrawal. Who enables her bullshit and bullying that will never pass the Senate ???
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 30, 2023 4:13 AM |
The irony is despite adding the amendment, she still voted against the bill, R5.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 30, 2023 4:18 AM |
Trump is orchestrating this. He has been egging his Sedition Caucus on insisting they should shut it down....The big issue they claim they want is to defund the support for Ukraine, and do something on immigration. They also want cuts to Medicare and the SNAP program Ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 30, 2023 4:18 AM |
I read that Kevin asked Republicans today in the closed meeting (after the failed vote) how many want a shutdown and 10 raised their hands. They want chaos.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 30, 2023 4:19 AM |
Create chaos. My agency has funding for five days, then we’re shutting down.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 30, 2023 4:19 AM |
They aren't negotiating in good faith. They are performing for the media. They want the shut down. They've been trying to shut down the government since Jan. 6th 2021. Trump is definitely behind it. He has been very public with his "Shut it down!" order. We're dealing with a very angry, very irrational man. He has been butt hurt since Joe won the election. And now all the indictments. And his NYC trial starts Monday. He thinks he can stop the legal proceedings. and whether or not he can he is showing Putin he still has power and that means he can raise rubles.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 30, 2023 4:22 AM |
Last time, when Trump wanted a shutdown to build his Mexican wall, Air Traffic Controllers started to call in sick. Then the shutdown quickly ended. I hope they do this again and sooner

Doesn't Gaetz represent a district with a military base? This isn't going to go over well with them. Hopefully he has an opponent next year that can hammer him with this.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 30, 2023 4:28 AM |
Gaetz, Greene, Boebert and their ilk doing TFG's bidding. This isn't going to stop your trials tRump...the courts keep on working.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 30, 2023 4:30 AM |
Kevin could get Democratic votes if he put forth a reasonable package. But his own caucus told him they will dump him and remove him as Speaker. They were dumb enough to float potential candidates to replace him, but then two of them said fuck off we're sticking with Kev. It seems clear. It won't happen, but it's pretty clear that if all the Dems and about 6 Republicans voted to pass a rational budget and deal with the debt ceiling this would be over. But for now, Hakeem said this is an internal difference of opinion within the GOP caucus and the Dems are just standing back, until they get it together. Apparently he has been told the Dems are not wanted. Assholes don't want to cooperate with the Democrats and can't agree on shit among themselves. CHaos.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 30, 2023 4:33 AM |
The Republicans now are clueless. They say they need 5 weeks to finish their bills, but they are not accounting for the time that will be needed to negotiate 12 different bills with the Senate, assuming they can even get them through the House. It’s completely illogical. It would take months to negotiate 12 bills. Plus they wasted time leading up to this and have still accomplished nothing.
I feel bad for anyone who will lose out pay or benefits over their stupidity.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 30, 2023 4:35 AM |
It's not just MTG, Gaetz, Boebert, it's Gosar, Jordan, and a few others too. McCarthy doesn't have enough votes to get anything done. In his own Caucus.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 30, 2023 4:36 AM |
Nancy Mace has also become a right wing flame thrower. Bitch. The only silver lining is that they are digging their own graves for 2024.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 30, 2023 4:40 AM |
If the members of Congress lost pay for this stupidity then things would change real quick. These theatrics should be tied to their healthcare coverage, pension and paycheck. Let's get real. If they ain't getting the job done then things must change
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 30, 2023 4:45 AM |
Unfortunately, some of the flame-throwers are in very safe districts, so they really aren’t risking their seats; but they are risking the very thin hold that the Repubs have on the House , and likely might help the Dems to a larger lead in the Senate ( as well as damaging Trump - in the general election).
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 30, 2023 4:49 AM |
Clown Caucus:
Late Friday evening, McCarthy wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that a bipartisan Senate proposal to keep the government funded through November 17, which includes aid for Ukraine, “has no path forward and is dead on arrival,” calling the bill “misguided.”
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 30, 2023 4:53 AM |
The rules seem to be:
Anything from Senate is bad, even if it’s bipartisan
It’s their way or the highway
A shutdown will show the Democrats who’s boss and hurt them
They have gone full on cruel and evil.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 30, 2023 4:57 AM |
Crashing the economy through a protracted government shutdown is their last play to get Trump elected, I see no reason why they'd want to end it before the election. So I think this will last until January 2025, if Dems keep the Senate. Possibly longer if they don't, which is highly likely.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 30, 2023 5:19 AM |
They may want it to last a long time, but inevitably they will be pushed back to reality when there is some disaster caused by the shutdown. They may not care about the military anymore but those folks will be pissed if they don’t receive pay for more than a month. Essential workers will cease to do their jobs.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 30, 2023 5:35 AM |
Here they are. These are the 21 members of the Sedition Caucus who are holding up everything, voting against their own Speaker, and shutting down our government. Since I have a Republican Congressman now I called his office yesterday to complain. I encourage everyone else in potentially swing districts held by Republicans at the moment to do so as well.
The shutdowns encourage good government employees to resign and legitimate government contractors to not bid on government contracts. This allows corrupt contractors to access tax payer money.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 30, 2023 3:16 PM |
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that the House will vote on a 45-day short-term spending bill Saturday, and it will include the natural disaster aid that the White House requested.
It will be under suspension, meaning it will need two-thirds of House members to pass. That means Republicans will need help from Democrats.
Asked if he is concerned that a member, like Rep. Matt Gaetz, could move to oust him over this bill, McCarthy replied: "If I have to risk my job for standing up for American public, I will do that."
McCarthy's announcement reflects a rapid shift inside the House GOP Conference meeting this morning, where just a short time ago lawmakers had indicated they would focus on bills that would minimize the impact of a government shutdown, rather than completely avoid one.

I've been saying this on here for a long, long time: the reason these jack asses are getting by with this shit is that largely they're from gerrymandered districts and are answerable to no one, not even voters.
Gerrymandering must be outlawed immediately. And yes, this applies to Democrats gerrymandering as well.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 30, 2023 4:05 PM |
Still infighting:
[quote]But McCarthy has been reluctant to call a vote on a clean funding bill — one that would garner the support of most House Democrats — because of threats to his speakership. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., repeatedly has vowed to overthrow McCarthy if he brings a CR to the floor that relies on Democratic votes to pass.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 30, 2023 4:22 PM |
Doesn’t the 45-day plan just kick the cam down the road? And it’s rich that McCarthy is trying to blame Democrats if they chose Ukraine over the U.S. He’s the one depending on them at the last minute to save him.

Gaetz wants to be Governor of Florida and these two McCarthy and Gaetz just dislike each other. And it started with this episode:
"Late at a 2019 Camp David retreat, Hutchinson says Gaetz followed her to a cabin he thought was hers — only to find McCarthy, who had gathered a bunch of Republicans for drinks and conversation.
Gaetz said he was lost, she writes, and prodded Hutchinson to escort him back to his cabin. “Get a life, Matt,” McCarthy said, shutting the door. (Gaetz denies the episode happened.)"

by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 30, 2023 5:51 PM |
Indeed it does R41, but in the last 40 years, the final appropriation bills have only been passed before 9/30 four times, so this is standard can kicking and it would be unlikely to be a big cut after a flat CR. That said, agencies like NIH only set their pay lines after the final budget is passed which result in extraordinary inefficiencies and waste.

R52 here. R63 R64 I suppose it's "impossible" for the U.S. to default on its loans, just like how the Pandemic is magically over. We Americans are very good at lying to ourselves about how things may turn out. We need to eliminate the gerontocracy, the political bourgeoisie, and the overwhelming Military-Industrial Complex. Even Eisenhower warned us about that in his outgoing 1959 speech.
It sounds like chaos if the U.S. gov't defaulted, but it is in fact necessary to lead to a streamlined, more functional nation. we are saddlebagging nearly $33 trillion that we need to do away with. It may lead to an economic fallout like we've never seen, but in the end, it would lead to some kind of prosperity within our nation. We need a fresh start like a whore needs crack, darlin'.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 30, 2023 9:31 PM |
Interesting analogy r69. We need a fresh start like a whore needs crack? Hmmm… also, you’re delusional if you think epic economic fallout will lead to prosperity. It will lead to civil war—the haves vs, the have nots. We will not be singing Kumbaya if the economy collapses. We’ll be slitting our neighbor’s throats for their bread.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 30, 2023 10:04 PM |
We don't really need to keep renewing the debt ceiling. Maybe that's what R69 meant. We could abolish the entire exercise. And some debt is good. I never heard anyone bitch too much about the f ucking Debt when Reagan was POTUS or Bush who really did bring our economy to the brink of collapse. It's only when the Dems are in office that everyone is concerned about gov't spending. BIll Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have been better for our economy than any recent modern Presidents.
Here's something to read. Educate yourself instead of just throwing numbers around and wringing your hands.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 30, 2023 10:04 PM |
To give a sense of just how challenging achieving balance in 2032 by controlling spending is, it would require doing one of the following:
Eliminating virtually all defense and nondefense discretionary spending programs;
Cutting Medicaid spending in half while eliminating all other mandatory spending outside of Social Security and Medicare;
Eliminating all nondefense discretionary spending and ending the entire Medicaid program;
Repealing Medicare, all income security programs, and all refundable tax credits; or
Discontinuing all Social Security retirement and survivors' benefits.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 30, 2023 10:08 PM |
At this point, America is completely dependent on debt and annual increases to the debt ceiling. It would take years of planning to change, not some stupid bill from Monkey Taylor Greene.

R85 they should definitely vote to oust him. Then they should spend the next six weeks failing to elect a replacement at which point the California and New York swing district Republicans can temporarily caucus with the Democrats to make Hakeem the actual Speaker so the country doesn’t shut down when this CR ends. That’ll result in them being primaried by RWNJs who will win the primaries, but lose the general, returning the house to Democratic control. That’ll show us libtards how it’s done.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | October 1, 2023 1:34 PM |
They don't have the votes to get rid of him. Gaetz, who is not beloved by his colleagues, doesn't have the votes to oust him. The cabal in Congress that call themselves the Freedom Caucus, but we refer to as the Sedition Caucus are still taking orders from Trump. But there aren't enough of them. Now if Gaetz and his shit for brains allies can intimidate some of them they might raise their numbers, but it wouldn't be enough. Sadly, I don't think you will find 6 Republicans willing to vote for Hakeem along with their Democratic colleagues. It took being on the brink of disaster for them to even do the basics last night. Every single thing is a fucking fight. Just because we got through last night doesn't mean the Republicans are malleable. Those votes were very reluctant, very conditional. We're a long way from Kumbaya. R89, I wish your scenario was likely. But at this point I honestly believe there are no "good " Republicans.

Not sure but I think
If all Democrats and some Republicans vote to remove McCarthy, then he will be removed
Then there would be the painful process of going through multiple failed votes to elect a new Speaker
But if all Democrats voted present or simply didn’t vote, then McCarthy would remain Speaker because Gaetz cannot get a majority of Republicans to vote him out.
It’s futile and a waste of time.

I can’t see how any Democrat would vote “for” McCarthy. He opened a partisan impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden with no evidence of wrongdoing. That means they either vote against him or don’t vote. And there is a danger in not voting in that it looks like they are trying to help McCarthy.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | October 1, 2023 10:03 PM |
My advice to the well hung Hakeem is to treat the motion to vacate just like the Speaker votes in January. So, all Democrats vote against McCarthy as a bloc and it’s up to Republicans to elect their own Speaker.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 1, 2023 11:17 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 104 | October 1, 2023 11:58 PM |
R104, then you might as well be a Gaetz Republican. The move right now is to do nothing and let this motion fail. There aren’t enough votes to boot him anyway, and even if there are, the last thing this country needs is an argument over who will be speaker, right before a government shutdown.
It’s either McCarthy, or a clusterfuck the likes of which we probably can’t imagine.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | October 2, 2023 12:59 AM |

R107, actually, I like that approach for sure! When I talk about the Dems abstaining, I obviously don’t think they should do it gratis. Definitely get promises for ton of shit, like support for Ukraine.
My biggest concern is Dems being pulled into this clusterfuck and Repukes blaming Dems for it in the media. The Repuke infighting needs to be front and center for the nation to see.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | October 2, 2023 1:14 AM |
If all Democrats voted to get rid of Kevin, he would be gone (assuming 10 Republicans vote the same).
If they abstain then the number for a majority goes down.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 2, 2023 1:44 AM |
R106, I was confused by that too. If the Dems all vote present, the removal will fail. I do think that they should do exactly that. Don't endorse him by voting for him, but deny Gaetz and his cabal of MAGA freaks the power they so desire.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | October 2, 2023 1:48 AM |
Dems will not get in the middle of a circular firing squad. Wisely. They will vote "present." They are not going to vote forGaetz or McCarthy. After all, on paper the Republicans hold the majority in the House. So let them be the majority. Be patient and play this out and the likelihood that the Democrats will have the House and the Speaker's position is all but guaranteed.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 2, 2023 1:57 AM |
Nonsense. The Democrats should not sit on the sidelines in this fight, but take full advantage of the situation by using their considerable power to extract promises from McCarthy to fund Ukraine and stop the sham impeachment lunacy.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | October 2, 2023 9:15 AM |
I think it is interesting that Gaetz wants to oust McCarthy for working with the Dems, but he can't do it without the cooperation of the Dems. I bet he fails to see the hypocrisy.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | October 2, 2023 1:54 PM |
He doesn't care; it keeps his name in the news and allows him to fund raise, which is his entire reason for doing anything.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | October 2, 2023 2:26 PM |
R112 I am sure the Dems will be doing everything they can. This iteration of the Republican Congress is not real bright. They play checkers, the Dems are playing chess. We have brains and cunning on our side. Matt Gaetz is stupid. Most of them are. Their staff is smart but again, crippled by ideology. Their extremist beliefs are really a hindrance. They are in their own bubble.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | October 2, 2023 3:44 PM |
I love Pelosi for not only publicly saying what most reasonable people believe about Gaetz, but calling out Tapper for wasting his time on Gaetz, who is, in many ways a media creation.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | October 2, 2023 3:46 PM |
Matt Gaetz is delusional if he thinks he could ever become Florida governor. I just don't see that happening, he can get re-elected in his gerrymandered district full of dipshit MAGAs, but I don't see him winning a statewide race. He's too obnoxious and smarmy.
Then again, it is Flori-DUH and they've elected Rhonda 2x as governor....
by Anonymous | reply 117 | October 2, 2023 4:29 PM |
Monkey Taylor Greene says Republicans “won’t stand for it” if Matt Gaetz is expelled. This of course before the Ethics committee report comes out on his behavior. Rube.

Hakeem has a lot of calculations to juggle. As much of an untrustworthy dolt that Kqevin McCarthy may be, he's the devil they know. Getting rid of him may feel good, and might be short-term good politics, but it would very likely hamper running the government. If the Gaetz dissidents join with all the Dems to vote in favor of the ouster, McCarthy is likely gone. I suspect that a majority of the GQP — but not a governing majority — will realize that is disaster and some type of coalition government with the Democrats may be the only way to avoid complete dysfunction.
It must have dawned on at least a few of them that their majority probably will not withstand what’s coming in the 2024 election. The only chance they currently have to survive the next 13 months is to isolate the crazies in an attempt to stop them.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | October 3, 2023 2:15 AM |
McCarthy is a piece of shit. He's going along with impeaching Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | October 3, 2023 2:26 AM |
I’ll play devil’s advocate a bit. First, there is no fucking reason for an impeachment inquiry whatsoever. Nothing. That said, there are enough Dumpie congresspeople who have decided that they will never vote for a budget ever again without an impeachment inquiry. I actually don’t know what options McCarthy has, the lunatics are running the asylum.
Again an impeachment inquiry is so unwarranted it’s sickening. My question to DL—should McCarthy just tell them to go fuck themselves? I don’t know how he lives with himself if he doesn’t. This is why Boehner and Ryan both quit—the Repukes are out of control.

Kevin is a POS. But, who the hell knows what POS might replace him. Whoever it is, they would likely be worse, because they have a lack of reasonable people on their side.

Sit this one out, Dems and let the children bicker.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | October 3, 2023 3:11 AM |
Exactly, R129. Kev has proven that he isn't the most trustworthy, reliable guy when it comes to agreements anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | October 3, 2023 4:17 AM |
I don’t see how any Dems could vote to save McCarthy. That’s not their job.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | October 3, 2023 4:28 AM |
On the bright side, the House chaos gives the mainstream media types like Andrea "I'm married to Methuselah aka Alan Greenspan" Mitchell something to talk about other than "Joe Biden is too old".
It'll distract the uniformed voters, this is a good thing.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | October 3, 2023 5:06 AM |
Sounds like it's a "GFY, Kevin." from the Dems, fam.
"IS IT TOO LATE FOR MCCARTHY
NEWS: MCCARTHY called JEFFRIES Monday night, as Democrats privately tell the New York Democrat they have no interest in saving the speaker.
McCarthy also saying he has no interest in cutting a deal with Democrats."
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 3, 2023 10:41 AM |
Who knows what will happen, but I think if they are announcing in the press that they are not interested in a deal, then they are probably working on a deal.
“Oh that? Actually, I am not even sure that I want to sell it. I didn’t even realize it was in the shop. We should look for something more in your price range.”
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 3, 2023 11:29 AM |
I believe if McCarthy goes, Scalise would take his place.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 3, 2023 12:24 PM |
Scalise is dealing with a very difficult cancer. Multiple Myeloma. Bone marrow. I don't think the timing is good for him to go after the Speakers' position and I think he will be loyal to Kev.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 3, 2023 2:48 PM |
Dems have announced that they won’t support McCarthy.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | October 3, 2023 3:47 PM |
Dems want concessions before they will save McCarthy. If he is desperate enough to keep his position, he will capitulate. It's all posturing.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 3, 2023 3:49 PM |
I hope they vote him out. They are not getting anything done, so nothing will change.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 3, 2023 3:51 PM |
R138 there's no deal he can make that the Dems will believe. He has already shit himself by breaking his deal with the WH about the Debt ceiling. This is all about Trump. Trump wants to government to shut down. He may be pissed off at Kevin for working with Dems to get the 45 day extension even thought Kev could argue that he got rid of the Ukraine money. it's a shit mess. And IMO The Dems are well out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 3, 2023 3:54 PM |
I hope they let the Republicans take care of their own infighting. The Dems need not be blamed for anything having to do with this fiasco. Just stay out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 3, 2023 3:55 PM |
Trump is also mad at McCarthy for not endorsing him and not expunging his impeachments from the official record (which may not even be possible to do).
But yes, Trump wants chaos.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 3, 2023 3:59 PM |
Maybe not:
[quote]McCarthy told Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he would bring up a no-confidence resolution from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) in the afternoon.
[quote]Rather than a vote on the resolution to take McCarthy’s gavel away, however, lawmakers said they expected to vote on a motion to kill that resolution.
