Do you have the hacking cough that’s not Covid?

I thought I did, but 3 Covid tests say it’s not. I had my Covid shot at CVS this morning and asked the doc. He said he thought it’s a cold going around. That was proven at my next two stops: the library then Whole Foods. It sounded like almost everyone at both places, masked or not, had TB or had been smoking 3 packs a day for 50 years.

I am finally getting over it. I have had a nasty cold for the last three weeks. I am still mildly congested, but the terrible cough has finally eased off. I lost my voice completely for a couple of days during the worst part of it.

by Anonymousreply 1September 29, 2023 4:24 PM

Yes. I got some kind of viral something or other last weekend and it's lingered. I've done at least four tests on myself and all were negatives.

by Anonymousreply 2September 29, 2023 4:25 PM

It's also a bad time of year for anyone with allergies. When the leaves bud, and fall, they cause all sorts of head-cold-like symptoms, and sinus infections.

by Anonymousreply 3September 29, 2023 4:27 PM

I had it in July. It lasted six weeks.

by Anonymousreply 4September 29, 2023 4:27 PM

Fuck. I’m only on week two.

RSV

Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization.

People infected with RSV usually show symptoms within 4 to 6 days after getting infected. Symptoms of RSV infection usually include

Runny nose Decrease in appetite Coughing Sneezing Fever Wheezing These symptoms usually appear in stages and not all at once. In very young infants with RSV, the only symptoms may be irritability, decreased activity, and breathing difficulties.

R7 I had the RSV shot a week before the symptoms started. Too soon for immunity to build up or reaction to the shot?

by Anonymousreply 8September 29, 2023 4:41 PM

I’ve had a cough since January. Not Covid, but it it turned into pneumonia. I still have a dry hacking cough all these months later. Sometimes it’s so bad, I vomit.

by Anonymousreply 9September 29, 2023 4:51 PM

From late summer to early fall

Allergic to ragweed and goldenrod - weeds

I pop Allegra almost daily.

by Anonymousreply 10September 29, 2023 5:25 PM

Had RSV last year. It was bad.

by Anonymousreply 11September 29, 2023 5:47 PM

Peeps with blood types A and AB are proven to be more susceptible to COVID-19.

Not by huge amount compared to other blood types, but enough for it to be statistically significant.

by Anonymousreply 12September 29, 2023 5:50 PM

Seasonal allergies are very bad this year. They can look and feel like a cold and can eventually become one.

by Anonymousreply 13September 29, 2023 5:57 PM

Had it. My cough lead to throbbing headaches. Not fun. As above - about 3 weeks of this.

by Anonymousreply 14September 29, 2023 5:58 PM

I was going to buy Zyrtec which all my friends say is the best, but it was so damned expensive I ended up buying the generic, store brand and it works just fine for allergies. As a matter of fact, whenever you're in a situation to buy over the counter meds, go for the store brand. It's ridiculous how expensive some of that crap is.

by Anonymousreply 15September 29, 2023 6:08 PM

R15 While I agree, I see many chains (here's looking at you, Target, CVS, Walgreen's) don't have a lot of the store brand items since the pandemic or if they do, they've jacked up the generic's price. Mucinex is $14.99, the CVS equivalent is $11.99 but only IF you are in their "rewards" scheme or whatever they call it.

My local supermarket has off-brand OTC meds cheaper than anywhere else.

by Anonymousreply 16September 29, 2023 6:14 PM

I had a sinus issue, took Amoxicillin, yet still this respiratory thing lingers on like a bad chest cold and cough. Mercifully I had no sore throat or earache, but yes the deep dry and then wet cough. One full week today since I started meds, but still coughing and generally tired.

My doctor called to check on me and recommended Delsyn over the counter cough med. $19.00 at CVS, and didn’t really help.

It all sounds worse (this cough) than it feels, yet it is still a pain.

by Anonymousreply 17September 29, 2023 6:26 PM

[quote]I had my Covid shot at CVS this morning and asked the doc.

There are no "docs" at CVS giving COVID shots.

by Anonymousreply 18September 29, 2023 7:33 PM

Damn. Misery loves company I guess. Congested. Intermittent coughing. Daily Covid tests just to be sure. All negative, thankfully. Got Covid and flu shots yesterday. Masking when I go out because I want to do what I can for others not to get this. Hate hearing some have been dealing w this for 6 weeks. I’ve got stuff to do next week that requires some energy. Until then Will & Grace rebinge festival, and lots of tea.

by Anonymousreply 19September 29, 2023 7:47 PM

We took a cruise from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale (through the Panama Canal) in August. Everyone on the ship was hacking. We called it the Cunard Cough.

by Anonymousreply 20September 29, 2023 8:04 PM

Sounds repulsive. If someone coughs around me in public, I leave.

by Anonymousreply 21September 29, 2023 8:12 PM

Coulda been the COVID tho. There's a theory that if you're heavily vaccinated the viral load doesn't get high enough to test, but the viral load doesn't necessarily correspond to the extent of the symptoms.

R16 I don't shop at CVS. Too expensive. My supermarket has everything I need including a reliable pharmacy.

by Anonymousreply 23September 29, 2023 8:37 PM

I got a very mild case of Covid last October (lasted 2 days). What is odd is that my allergies have gotten better, no runny nose, not a lot of sneezing, and very few needs for my inhaler. But we'll see next week when the Santa Anas blow, which is the worst for me.

Also, CVS won't let you sign up for the RSV shot if you're under 60.

by Anonymousreply 24September 29, 2023 8:58 PM

R24 I had to have a prescription from my doctor to get the RSV shot at Publix Pharmacy.

by Anonymousreply 25September 30, 2023 2:47 AM

I have a sinus infection. No cough, though, and I've tested negative for COVID.

I just bought (real) Sudafed because I'm so congested.

by Anonymousreply 26September 30, 2023 2:51 AM

I had covid and had a cough for months. Even now, I still have an occasional cough that I've never had before.

Perhaps, it's a residual cough from an asymptomatic case of covid from a few weeks back.

by Anonymousreply 27September 30, 2023 3:41 AM

No, R27 I am in the same shape. The Covid coughing and then once you finally recover, you have these weird coughing spells every once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 28September 30, 2023 4:23 AM

No coughs and not a cold for years. Vaccinated and I mask

by Anonymousreply 29September 30, 2023 1:13 PM

I've never gotten COVID, but I managed to get a bad cold in spring 2022 -- despite masking (KN95) whenever I was in public.

by Anonymousreply 30September 30, 2023 1:17 PM

One of the reasons I'm convinced my recent infection was COVID and not a cold is the persistent fatigue, weeks later. It now comes intermittently as time moves on but whatever I had knocked me out and I just don't recall a cold ever doing that.

by Anonymousreply 31September 30, 2023 1:20 PM

My family out west is coughing a lot, sneezing, and has upper respiratory congestion. Ticklish throat, too. But no fever. They tested negative for COVID, twice, but the fatigue and the aches are there. It seems very contagious but not as severe as COVID.

by Anonymousreply 32September 30, 2023 1:48 PM

Another hypochondriac DL thread. Imagine.

by Anonymousreply 33September 30, 2023 1:55 PM

I sometimes feel rundown and immediately take a self-administered at home-covid test, always negative

by Anonymousreply 34September 30, 2023 2:09 PM

The irony of r34 immediately following r33 ...

by Anonymousreply 35September 30, 2023 2:12 PM

That was a charming haiku, R10.

by Anonymousreply 36September 30, 2023 3:47 PM

A guy I know has had it for weeks. Has was tested and been found negative for covid. Thought it might be bronchitis. His doctor told him recently that it’s related to asthma.

Who knew.
