Elizabeth Warren shreds Biden nominee medicare advantage profiteer

Demetrios Kouzoukas was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a trustee on the boards of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. In his opening statement, Kouzoukas thanked the members of the Senate Finance Committee and concluded, “I look forward to answering your questions.”

Warren tested the limits of that pledge when she asked the nominee about his board seat at Clover Health, a company that insures seniors as part of Medicare Advantage. At first, Kouzoukas refused to answer a question about his compensation as a Clover board member before finally relenting. But when asked if he would resign his seat if confirmed, the nominee refused to say, prompting Warren to tell him she will oppose his nomination.

“A big factor influencing Medicare solvency today is the growth of Medicare Advantage, a program that allows for-profit insurance companies to sell Medicare coverage that experts say is on target this year to charge– overcharge the government by $75 billion,” Warren said,.

The transcript of her questions and the nominee dancing around to avoid answering is too long to post but is quite amusing.

How many times did see use the word “billionaire”?

by Anonymousreply 1September 29, 2023 2:44 AM

She***

by Anonymousreply 2September 29, 2023 2:44 AM

If a Biden nominee is being shredded by EW, then he has no chance against Republicans

by Anonymousreply 3September 29, 2023 2:46 AM

She rocked in this.

by Anonymousreply 4September 29, 2023 3:02 AM

He came across as a total scumbag.

by Anonymousreply 5September 29, 2023 3:05 AM

Why did Biden put forth such a questionable nominee?

by Anonymousreply 6September 29, 2023 3:26 AM

Good for her!!!

by Anonymousreply 7September 29, 2023 3:40 AM

It was almost an unfair fight how she destroyed. He'd look down, gulp, read some weaselly talking points, and then bam!!

by Anonymousreply 8September 29, 2023 3:43 AM

She should have ran for the nomination against Hillary.

by Anonymousreply 9September 29, 2023 3:57 AM

You all seem to forget that she made her money and built her career as a lawyer defending scumbags.

It's also interesting that her wikipedia has been scrubbed of all references to her work.

[quote]Sen. Elizabeth Warren often rails against big corporate executives on the campaign trail. But during her days as a bankruptcy law professor, she took side jobs for a number of them...The Massachusetts senator recently disclosed making nearly $2 million from dozens of private legal cases over the course of three decades, amid aspersions cast upon the work by some of her rivals in the Democratic presidential primary race — particularly Pete Buttigieg.

[quote]Why did Biden put forth such a questionable nominee?

Two words: campaign contributions.

by Anonymousreply 11September 29, 2023 4:37 AM

[quote]She should have ran for the nomination against Hillary.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 12September 29, 2023 4:37 AM

R3 Right is right and she is right.

by Anonymousreply 13September 29, 2023 4:44 AM

Serious question: Why did Warren have such a hard time gaining traction during her presidential run?

She’s experienced, knowledgeable, a strong communicator. No, not a perfect candidate. Her past isn’t ideal. But there are no perfect candidates.

IIRC, she couldn’t even garner much support in Massachusetts.

Is it simply sexism? Are we unable to propel any woman to the presidency? Or is there something else about Warren that makes her unelectable?

by Anonymousreply 14September 29, 2023 5:53 PM

Some sexism perhaps, but it probably had more to do with how she generally came across as hectoring and humorless, like a schoolteacher you remember disliking. Since much (way too much) in politics has to do with how people perceive your personality, she was at a disadvantage.

However, she is 100% right here.

by Anonymousreply 15September 29, 2023 6:11 PM

R14, as a MA resident, the reason Warren doesn't gain traction is that she is so freakin' shrill all the time.

When she first burst on to the scene, she was a much softer spoken college professor who stood up to and defeated Scott Brown.

Over the years her tone has become harsher and shrill. To use an old fashioned term she's a shrew.

It's unfortunate too. I think she's very smart. I used to enjoy watching her take down corporate big wigs. She decimated the head of Wells Fargo years ago... great fun!

And R10, quote, "The Massachusetts senator recently disclosed making nearly $2 million from dozens of private legal cases over the course of three decades,"... big deal. Over 30 years? Do the math...

by Anonymousreply 16September 29, 2023 6:11 PM

I think it also has to do with the party being so traumatized over Hillary losing to Trump that electability was everything.

by Anonymousreply 17September 29, 2023 6:20 PM

r16, bitch please. NO ONE would call a male politician 'shrill'. They'd say he's effective or gets shit done.

by Anonymousreply 18September 29, 2023 6:55 PM

What does "shrill" even mean to people who use it to criticize women? Is it that she has a female voice? Does she screech? Or is it what she says? I really want to know.

by Anonymousreply 19September 29, 2023 6:58 PM

It means they view aggressive women in leadership positions as threatening. Men who do this are "showing leadership" and would be considered "ballsy."

It's misogyny plain and simple and I hope r16 realizes he's perpetuating it by his post. It doesn't mean he's wrong as the vast majority of people are against women who are aggressive. Don't ya know...she should be in the kitchen making all her male counterparts sammys.

by Anonymousreply 20September 29, 2023 7:12 PM

Funny, she doesn't look Shrewish.

by Anonymousreply 21September 29, 2023 7:27 PM

Got over yourselves... Warren's voice can be like nails on a chalkboard. Fact.

Sorry guys, men rarely have a voice like hers, but Chuck Schumer also has a voice that is just grating. That New York tone/accent... and yes, I know it and don't like it. I was raised on Long Island and worked very hard to get rid of my NY accent.

So yes, he's grating and she's shrill.

by Anonymousreply 22September 29, 2023 9:18 PM

How many billions of dollars are spent for waste and fraud in regular Medicare? When I was administering my mother’s affairs, I was shocked by how every provider and entity we dealt with tried to do things that were unnecessary just so they could bill it to Medicare. It was incredible. They knew that Medicare, unlike an insurance company, would just pay for the services and supplies without questioning the necessity. It made me sick to see healthcare providers act like pirates to grab as much Medicare dough as they could.

So between that and Medicare Advantage companies, pick your poison.

by Anonymousreply 23September 29, 2023 9:39 PM

Lotta words for R22 to say that Schumer is a Jew.

by Anonymousreply 24September 29, 2023 9:50 PM

I don’t think there is any question that in the old days, Warren would be put in the dunking stool as correction for clearly being an old scold. However, I don’t think she can do anything at this point to make herself likable. Her stunt of having a beer for the camera was universally mocked for its inauthenticity.

Hunter's penis.

And maybe his laptop. With pics of his penis.

by Anonymousreply 26September 29, 2023 9:54 PM

'If you could see her through my eyes/She wouldn't look shrewish at all!.

by Anonymousreply 27September 29, 2023 10:27 PM

r22, just because you are put off by her voice doesn't make her wrong or incapable of holding office.

by Anonymousreply 28September 29, 2023 10:34 PM

Be gentle, R28; R22 probably chooses his candidates by the simple but time-honored criterion of who would be most fun to have a beer with.

by Anonymousreply 29September 29, 2023 10:40 PM

Like it or not, R29, that's real. And so it matters. You ignore stuff like that and you get winning the popular vote but not the electoral college. That and $3 will get you a coffee.

I don't buy the they'd never say that about a man argument. Sure they would. They'd just use a different word. They'd call him an asshole. (Hello down there, John McCain.) Nobody actually likes an asshole, though they may, in part, respect him and I would argue Warren is respected. The shrill thing is one adjective among many.

It's worth noting that whatever her flaws, EW keeps getting elected senator, so she's apparently not too shrill to be elected senator but may be too shrill to be nominated and elected president? I think it's kind of a lazy dodge to explain why she doesn't connect with enough voters when it comes to the highest office. (I think it's because she too often appears to be talking at, rather than to. And, like Hillary, she has no talent for faking that aw shucks bullshit. Painful.) But no one, not even St. Hillary, is entitled to be elected president, no matter how smart they are (more's the pity, I suppose.) One way or another, you have to earn it. Regrettably, likeability is part of the equation, as is gravitas. They're intangibles but you know it when you see it.

by Anonymousreply 30September 29, 2023 11:09 PM

R 28 you are correct that her voice does not make her wrong or incapable of holding office, but it might, just might have some influence on her electability. (FULL DISCLOSURE:I am a Warren fan, love watching her in action, would vote for her as POTUS , consider myself to be a “feminist “, BUT somehow, instinctively , am “put off” or irritated or have some sort of negative response to her voice, especially when she become louder and more actively aggressive.

by Anonymousreply 31September 29, 2023 11:17 PM

[quote] You ignore stuff like that and you get winning the popular vote but not the electoral college.

That doesn't make sense. You ignore the popularity-contest aspect to campaigning and you'll win the popular vote?

by Anonymousreply 32September 29, 2023 11:19 PM

The Pocahontas label. It was damaging.

by Anonymousreply 33September 29, 2023 11:22 PM

[quote]That and $3 will get you a coffee.

Where?

by Anonymousreply 34September 29, 2023 11:22 PM

R25, Warren is a scold - nice description.

R30, Warren has a lifetime app't to the Senate because she is a Democrat from Massachusetts! Jesus, the last time we had a Republican senator was Scott Brown and he was a fluke.

We are not a two-party state. Until recently, at least we at least had a Republican governor (yes, to veto the Democratic legislature). But the state Republican party went completely MAGA... they hated Charlie Baker and ran a candidate who was a loser. Republican candidates here who aren't even MAGA lost local elections.

by Anonymousreply 35September 30, 2023 12:16 AM

He's not worthy.

by Anonymousreply 36September 30, 2023 12:35 AM

Why don't you switch to calling her "grating," then?

by Anonymousreply 37September 30, 2023 12:43 AM

[quote] Why did Biden put forth such a questionable nominee?

I can think of hundreds of thousands of reasons.

by Anonymousreply 38September 30, 2023 1:53 AM

[quote]Regrettably, likeability is part of the equation, as is gravitas.

If gravitas had ANYTHING to getting elected president, Dubya and ESPECIALLY Trump would never have gotten anywhere near the Oval Office.

by Anonymousreply 39September 30, 2023 3:31 AM

Dubya had gravitas, but he managed to project more likeability. Gravitas is simply satisfying some intangible that answers the question does this person seem like a President? It doesn't always do you in, but it can. There's a reason, historically, most nominees are in the end pretty much cut from the same piece of cloth. Trump is an entirely separate phenomenon, created by the lack of confidence in government and a changing world that threatens the American dream/delusion.

by Anonymousreply 40September 30, 2023 1:24 PM

Dubya had no gravitas whatsoever. His public persona was that of a malapropistic, deer-in-the-headlights nepo—or, at most, the (fake) brush-clearing rancher. Even incumbency in the middle of a war barely gave him a majority. Some people may have thought Dubya projected gravitas, but they probably also thought Trump did (like in the ridiculous paintings by Jon McNaughton).

by Anonymousreply 41September 30, 2023 1:38 PM

He had enough. And yes, enough people thought so.

by Anonymousreply 42September 30, 2023 2:21 PM

Well, R42, obviously *you* thought W had gravitas. Maybe you were watching a lot of Fox in those days.

by Anonymousreply 43September 30, 2023 2:25 PM

Oh, don't be paranoid, it's weak. I don't think he was a good president, he wasn't. But how he got elected is entirely separate thing. You're so delicate.

by Anonymousreply 44September 30, 2023 2:31 PM

R33 "Fauxcahontas."

Also, "Liawatha."

by Anonymousreply 45September 30, 2023 2:32 PM

George H.W. Bush had a gravitas thar didn't carry over to son in any manner.

Likeable? Somewhat charming? Sure.

Serious? Naww.

by Anonymousreply 46September 30, 2023 2:33 PM

𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘀 was never part of the American political lexicon until the day Dick Cheney was named as Bush's VP choice. Then somebody widely distributed the talking point script to the media as a way to belittle Bush.

the montage is from 2:00-to-2:55,

AL HUNT: He meets all of George W’s weaknesses, lack of gravitas.

JUAN WILLIAMS: We see the son, who is seeking some gravitas.

CLAIRE SHIPMAN: They were looking at candidates with gravitas.

STEVE ROBERTS: But he has the gravitas and you can sum it up in one word, stature.

VIC FAZIO: It may go to the gravitas.

JEFF GREENFIELD: We’re to use the favorite phrase, gravitas.

LESTER HOLT: This is a vice president who brought gravitas.

WOLF BLITZER: This will give some gravitas, add some credibility.

ED ROLLINS: I think the gravitas that Cheney brought to the ticket.

JONATHAN ALTER: What he gets is gravitas, a sense of weight.

BOB KERREY: He does not need anybody to give him gravitas.

MARGARET CARLSON: It means that, you know, gravitas.

MIKE MCCURRY: I think he also needs some gravitas.

SAM DONALDSON: To give gravitas.

ELEANOR CLIFT: Well, he brings gravitas.

WALTER ISAACSON: He does seem to bring some gravitas.

AL HUNT: It’s called gravitas.

MARK SHIELDS: A little gravitas!

JUDY WOODRUFF: You certainly have gravitas tonight.

SAM DONALDSON: He displayed tonight a certain gravitas.

MARIO CUOMO: I think gravitas is the word. Unfortunately for the Governor, you can’t graft gravitas. … He has gravitas.

But gravitas had been in the dictionary for some time prior, yes?

by Anonymousreply 48September 30, 2023 3:33 PM

Yes, R48, in the dictionary and the political vernacular.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 49September 30, 2023 3:42 PM

But I don't understand, R49, because R47 says gravitas was never part of the American political lexicon until the day Dick Cheney was named as Bush's VP choice. She produced a transcript.

by Anonymousreply 50September 30, 2023 4:01 PM

R47 is wrong that "gravitas" wasn't part of the American political lexicon before 2000—but is absolutely right to demonstrate that W was perceived to lack gravitas, and to need a VP candidate to compensate for that lack.

by Anonymousreply 51September 30, 2023 6:27 PM

Kind of off track, but it's more than a bit ironic that Bush would have very likely had a more successful presidency WITHOUT Cheney.
