No one watching Larry’s 4 early Hollywood films could ever imagine this blank, impersonal, passionless remote actor, who was about as appealing and bland as the groom atop a wedding cake, would emerge as the greatest English speaking actori in the Western world. His contemporary Robert Donat ran circles around him as did Charles Laughton. Yet beginning in 1937 there were 6 films, where little by little the emergence of not just a good, solid actor appeared, but a shimmering brilliant one that wiped all his contemporaries off the screen. First reveal, FIRE OVER ENGLAND and the scene where he hears of his father’s death…his technical prowess is breathtakingly on display, from hearing the news of his father's to his exit......Next up, THE DIVORCE OF LADY X. Watch the opening sequence where Larry, as lawyer, handles his overly verbal monologue adroitly, while making points with his pencil…. WUTHERING HEIGHTS….Larry is arriving, and and what he achieves is not stagey or hammy as Sam Goldwyn called his performance half way through the shoot but real and believeable… PRIDE AND PREJUDICE…. his Darcy and his glorious acting choices .…THAT HAMILTON WOMAN…… Larry arrives!!…….No other English speaking actor at that time could or would come close to his towering brilliance in just the complete total command of voice and body. Then the major, major break out role that solidified his statue as the greatest living English speaking actor in the world: HENRY V…...He conquers and we see in full mode demonstration, why he wiped his English and American contemporaries off the screen. If that’s not enough, he locks it in for all eternity with his 1964 OTHELLO. Try to name any, any, any English speaking actor who comes close to achieving the magnificence of his performance. You can’t. Just like no one can close to what Brando did with Streetcar.
From No There, There, Larry, to sublime brilliance in 6 early films. Topped by one late one.
