"Dolls! Dolls! Dolls!" is a fun read, r10.
My choice would be a book by DL's favorite chef/authoress, Cathy Mitchell — [italic]Dump Diet[/italic].

Don't overlook OP's suggestion. It sounds dreadful.

Hansel and Gretel in Beverly Hills by Sheila Weller (1978)
It's a Jacqueline Susann/Neil Simon mash up, and, yes, there are caftans, gay hairdresser BFFs, Phenos and Nembutal, white rattan furniture, grapefruit and diet-soda diets, and enough cultural stereotypes and ethnic humor to offend everybody.
"The heartwarming bosom-buddy relationship between a woman and her hairdresser. Ronald is a relentlessly campy aging flamer who's carrying a torch for a blond T-shirted Adonis and supporting a Nicaraguan orphan. Lil is the hippest yenta Ronald has ever met, a sex-hungry, widowed divorcee who's looking for work as a publicist. They mother each other, darling each other, and console each other when their love lives go sour. Ronald's new, true romance with a cautious closet case goes awry as Lil falls for a handsome hick from Tucson but can't stomach his square Arizona friends. Cohorts, soulmates, and orphans of similar storms, Ronald and Lil form one of the oddest of odd couples ever to support each other through thick and thin!"
