I saw it in the theatre and loved it, too.

by Anonymousreply 1September 29, 2023 12:21 AM

I watched it for the first time over the summer and thought Margot Robbie was terrific.

by Anonymousreply 2September 29, 2023 12:22 AM

Margot Robbie is a very talented actress.

by Anonymousreply 3September 29, 2023 12:23 AM

I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and liked it a lot as well.

And Allison Janney is wonderful in it.

R7 Tonya had raw athletic talent but was incredibly lazy.

by Anonymousreply 9September 30, 2023 2:54 AM

I liked the version with Julie Brown and Stella Stevens better.

Why can’t it be tidy whites? They’re much tidier than boxers.

I saw this back when it was first released at the Century Theater in Clackamas Town Center, which coincidentally was built over the exact space where the mall's food court and ice rink used to be. I saw Tonya Harding skate on that very rink when I was a little kid—I was very young during the Nancy Kerrigan scandal (around 3 or 4 years old), but I went with my parents there to watch her practice, which was a major cause célèbre given the circumstances. I was young enough that I didn't know what was going on or why we were there, aside from the fact that she was an Olympian and was somehow important. One of my dad's childhood friends used to regularly see Tonya chain-smoking and getting trashed with Jeff Gillooly at bars out in and around Oregon City around this same time. She's always lived rough.

The fact that I saw the movie on her old stomping grounds was incidental (I was visiting family in town for the holidays and it just happened to be showing there), but in retrospect was a funny full-circle moment for me. I thought it was a really good movie, irrespective of what I think about Harding.

I saw it at the Toronto Intl Film Festival. I thought it was incredibly well done and much of the cast were there for the screening. Glad that you enjoyed it OP

Loved this and loved Margot in it. For me the only problem was that Margot, even ugged up, is just too beautiful to play pugnosed Tonya Harding. That throws the dynamic of the story off a bit — Nancy was the beauty queen.

I had the same issue with the remake of Carrie — which I actually thought was pretty good. But Chloe Moretz is just too beautiful to physically depict Carrie.

There was something creepy looking about Nancy Kerrigan. She might have been a nice person and a good athlete but she looked like a snotty, snobby rich girl.

by Anonymousreply 16September 30, 2023 6:16 AM

Except, R16, she was from a blue-collar family and her mentally-ill brother killed her father.

She was and still is beautiful, but a long, long way from a snotty, snobby rich girl.

OP, please consider a couple of remedial English classes.

Oh, dear.

You mean it didn't?

by Anonymousreply 21September 30, 2023 1:01 PM

Nancy was from your typical middle-class, alcoholism-ridden New England family; Tonya was pure west coast white trash, raised by an abusive mother. Being from Massachusetts, I think the media naively portrayed Nancy as some sort of old money princess. In truth, I think Nancy and Tonya probably had more in common than most would think.

I enjoyed it more than I expected, and I am a fan of Janney, but there is no way she deserved the Oscar that year over Metcalf. Janney gave an amusing single-note performance. Metcalf found depth in what could have been a stereotypical “mom” role.

by Anonymousreply 23September 30, 2023 9:06 PM

Janney did a great job at playing Tonya's mother IMO. LaVona still denies having abused Tonya, but it's always seemed clear that she was a mean, nasty kook. You can see the coldness in her eyes, which even her Miss Havisham-esque flower crown can't distract from.

I fell in love with Sebastian Stan in this movie. I had never seen him in anything before it. Even though his character was so pathetic, he was absolutely adorable.

According to the movie, Tonya and Nancy were friendly before the attack. There's a scene where they're rooming together and sharing a smoke. No idea if that's true...

Also, didn't Nancy marry her male coach?

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2023 1:15 AM

I remember watching Nancy's mother during her free skate. Her mother is almost completely blind, and had to watch the performance with her nose pressed against a tv screen. That's the only way should remotely see Nancy on the ice.

It wasn't that hard to dress better than Tonya in the early 90s. Her taste was glitzy 80s cowgirl crap.

I heard about this movie on DL and finally got around to watching it. I really enjoyed it! I was also impressed by Robbie’s ice-skating. Here’s a little article about how she learned how to skate.
