Which jobs do you expect to be taken over by AI in the next ten years?

My company just got rid of a freelance translator/proofreader because „ChatGPT can do just as good a job, at virtually no cost“ ($20 per month subscription).

I think a lot in the journalism/writing/editing markets.

by Anonymousreply 2September 28, 2023 10:13 PM

I’d add maybe marketing and advertising.

Trans sex workers of color.

I’m a translator and I would be very surprised if I am still employed in this sector in 10 years time. However, I admittedly did think the same thing 20 years ago when computer-assisted translation was becoming widely used.

I’m lucky that I work in technical/legal fields, and people still recognise the need for accuracy in the texts that I translate and are willing to pay for it. However, people are much more selective about the work they send to me. Some of my colleagues would rather use Google Translate than send work to the Translation Dept of our company.

I’m in my forties (but look 25) and I do often think I should be looking to move into a more secure line of work before I am much older. However, I think AI is going to affect many employment sectors, so it’s not easy to decide what work will still be in demand during my next 20 years of work.

I can’t wait to get rid of drive thru food workers.

A majority of the jobs that require human decision making people would gladly give up .People would love to hand making random decisions to a robot. One can now be freed to focus on the hard questions. Where did this lint in my belly button come from.

R6, excellent points. This is especially true in the legal industry. Translations and transcriptions of audio files such as witness statements, depositions, hearings, trial transcripts, and the like must be verbatim accurate. If AI makes any mistakes, it can become a legal issue impacting a case. I've done transcription and proofreading in legal, medical, and insurance. Even if a company uses AI programs for the initial transcript, they seem to always rely on a human proofreader to fix formatting, ensure context accuracy, proper spelling, etc.

nothing that requires emotion or creativity

by Anonymousreply 11September 28, 2023 10:57 PM

You know how frustrating it is to call a company and actually need to talk to an actual person? Now there will be no actual person to talk to.

Call centre jobs

Hopefully politicians. Can we program them to serve our interests?

R8, no way, robot audiobook voices are terrible.

I work in marketing/graphic design, and I’m glad I’m probably retiring in 4 or 5 years. I know they’d love for me to go since I have worked up to a nice enough salary and they could replace me with AI at some point. BUT…you’d still have to have someone to approve the projects and tell the AI what to you need, right? I’m an eldergay (by DL standards) and I admit I don’t fully understand all this.

A majority of IT jobs. Programmers, DB admins, network engineers, phone support, etc. A good chunk of these are already outsourced to Indian off-shore workers so it will be even cheaper to let AI do them.

Prostitution, and the hosts of “The View.”

All of the lower-end creative jobs.

- Background / elevator / corporate music will be “composed” by AI

- Brochures / flyers / presentations will be written by AI

- Websites, including graphics and text, will be designed by AI

- Stock photographs will be generated by AI

- Narration and voice-overs will be done by AI
