I'll give you Denise Richards

I dont know how you can watch MR WRONG and say Ellen isn't funny. It's a funny movie. It's also an anti-romantic comedy from an age where they were pumping out rom coms. Whether its watchable all the way through is up to the individual but some of the sequences are hilarious, or at the very least, amusing. Bill Pullman is also great in it.

And you never for a second believe she's straight.

Andie Macdowell takes a lot of shit for her acting but 99% of it is for one … cringe … scene.
She’s been good in other things.
Uma and Sharon? Your cray-cray, homes.

One of my favorite parts of Mad Men is when photos of Don and Betty are shown of them when they were supposedly teenagers.
The art department used old photos of the actors, put them in clothes and settings for the correct era, but forgot to amend JJ's original huge nose to match her adult, heavily altered nose.
Without a nosejob, she wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

Ali MacGraw and Bo Derek deserve mentions.
I have a soft spot for Denise Richards. Even her most maligned performance as nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones in the Bond movie was camp heaven, and she's a lot of fun in Wild Things, Starship Troopers and Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Deneuve was good in Bell de Jour---playing a whore as uptight is a refreshing change from the usual skanks and heart of gold hookers.

Speaking of drag queens and trans who can't act, Laverne Cox and the some of the trans cast of Pose. Shoot me but I thought Billy Porter was effective on Pose, though the character was not enjoyable. Drag queens and trans people are too "on" in regular life so it's difficult to "double act" - same problem with Madonna. Joan Crawford and Marilyn Monroe had fabricated personalities but managed to act over and around their inherent artifice, very effectively.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 28, 2023 4:41 PM |
Faye was excellent in Bonnie and Clyde, Thomas Crown Affair, Chinatown, Network, Mommie Dearest, Barfly, etc. She's not THAT limited.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 28, 2023 4:42 PM |
Deneuve is a fantastic actress OP. Subtle and understated, foreign among these parts, so of course you tasteless queens will say she's "bad."
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 28, 2023 4:44 PM |
On top of Belle de Jour, Umbrellas and Repulsion, check out Young Girls of Rochefort, Last Metro, Mississippi Mermaid, any of her Techine movies (Thieves and Hotel America especially)...
Isabele Huppert has the similar understated and cold thing going on, but because she's not a great beauty, she never really gets called a "bad" actress.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 28, 2023 4:49 PM |
Oprah tends to lapse into the black vernacular way of speaking when she acts. In almost every role except as the shrink in ELLEN’S Very Special Episode. She drops her perfect enunciation and calls it acting.

R98: Well received by whom. If you watch Four Weddings and Funeral, there are scenes which appear to have been dubbed and she doesn't sound natural at all. Even her commercials were a chore.
The other poster commented on her only having girlfriend roles, but could you imagine her coming off well in "A Doll's House" or "A Glass Menagerie" (in either women's part). The nicest thing you can say about her is that she doesn't chew the scenery.

R106 critics
but I was most impressed by MacDowell. I generally find her likable, but I’ve never seen her as good as in this (only her third movie after GREYSTOKE and ST. ELMO’S FIRE). She’s a character who says so much about herself without actually saying it. When she’s talking to her therapist and she claims things are going pretty good it seems like she really does believe that, but we can tell that there’s more to it. Or when she comes back and talks about Graham having visited, her words are saying it’s nothing big but her voice is saying that she is smitten with this dude who is so different from her husband. Also, as much as she talks about not being interested in sex, the way she handles objects while talking to Graham about it seems to indicate otherwise.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 28, 2023 10:48 PM |
Though bewitchingly pretty, MacDowell has never really found her niche in the movies, but playing this knucklehead brand of modern screwball comedy, she has finally come into her own. Her scenes with Murray have an otherworldly sort of chemistry (with Murray, what else is possible?). And his vermin eccentricity releases a charming flakiness in her; for the first time, her endearing awkwardness really seems to work

One good performance (Or more - Deneuve? Ridiculous.) removes people from the list. That takes out Catherine Deneuve, Uma Thurman, Sharon Stone and Andie MacDowell.
Replace them with
Rosie "Speshul" O'Donnell
Sandra "Ex Nazi-Lover/Always the Same/Connects with No Costars" Bullock
Jennifer Love Hewitt (aka Jennifer Lugs Huge Tits.)
Angelina Jolie, whose career has been based on being weird, bug-eyed, dazed and supremely self-centered while pretending to be Mother Teresa.
And throw in Shirley Temple (tremendous in her way as a child, after her tits budded she was hideous), Ali MacGraw (always terrible), Tara Reid, Hillary Duff, Tara Reid, and the cunt Juliette Lewis.
Davies had a flair for comedy. She was unfairly savaged in "Citizen Kane" because Hearst pushed her into unsuitable roles. Harlow was wonderful in several films. Shearer and Garson often were insufferable but they weren't bad actresses. Cybil Shepherd was good in "Last Picture Show," period.
Beyonce is as bad as an actress as she is a "singer/dancer." Mariah Carey, on the other hand, was perfect in "Precious."

Barbara Parkins

Ava Gardner is good in a number of roles---limited but not bad.
Parkins was ok on "Peyton Place", forgettable in :Valley of the Dolls"---Patty Duke's overacting and the luminous Sharon Tate's non-acting are more memorable.

Sandra Dee
Mimsy Farmer
That awful little girl who played Beverly Garland's daughter on "My Three Sons" --- Garland, herself made bad movies and delivered bad dialogue, but wasn't a bad actress.

I've seen her in several movies and she was terrible. She was good (according to Pauline Kael, not me) in a couple of silent comedies directed by King Vidor. She was better when she was silent. She had a stammer and her acting suffered from it, and also, she couldn't act. She was likeable.

Deneuve was gorgeous and she has fantastic presence but her acting is frigid. Maybe that's why Hitchcock wanted her for the movie he never made.

R156. your Jennifer Love Hewitt references is a reminder that there are a good number of teen soap starlets who could make the list of worst actresses. I think Katie Holmes gave a few good performances (Wonder Boys, The Ice Storm), but I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned her yet. And what about tabloid starlet Mischa Barton?
But if we're really being cruel, there are a ton of performances by children that make the worst of Andie MacDowell look like Streep in Sophie's Choice. It might not be polite to criticize the Olsen twins' performances as children, but they're full-grown adults with hundreds of millions in the bank and one of them might have killed Heath Ledger, so I don't feel bad saying how awful they were.

I like Katie but she is kind of a bad actress. There no there there. She can’t emote.

R162, I recall LOOK Magazine proclaiming her “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World” back in the 1960s.

Catherine Deneuve? Really? I’d argue that she’s underrated

R169 Not forgettable, with her looks. I guess her acting ability was forgettable.
She was okay, she just didn't seem to be able to do much except to underact.

R141 yes, thank you. I thought Paula Prentiss was the more interesting character in The Stepford Wives. There's just something kind of boring about Katharine Ross. No offense.

Paula Prentiss is a better actress than Katharine Ross.

Katharine has gorgeous eyes, but little else. She must be a little crazy with five marriages.
