This is a huge loss for Dump, the judge just cancelled all of his business licenses out of New York. He's already moved several of them out of state but New York wants him to get everything the fuck out. They'll assess his fines later at his trial.

[quote] In his order, Justice Engoron wrote scathingly about Mr. Trump’s defenses, saying that the former president and the other defendants, including his two adult sons and his company, ignored reality when it suited their business needs.
Eric & Donald Jr. are co-defendants?
[quote] The judge also levied sanctions on Mr. Trump’s lawyers for making arguments that he previously rejected. He ordered each to pay $7,500, noting that he had previously warned them that the arguments in question bordered on being frivolous.
Orange Turd's attorneys got sanctioned $7,500 each for raising frivolous arguments.
R16, I always thought the reason Turd never wanted to turn over his tax returns was because he lied about his income and assets (inflated them).

The trial will be limited; the judge found on summary judgment that Trump committed fraud. He doesn’t have a lot of room to maneuver. The business licenses of Trump and some of his businesses have been cancelled; it looks like at least some of his NY properties will have to go into receivership.

It was a partial summary judgment; as to certain fraud charges the judge ruled that there are no triable issues of material fact—in other words, assuming all submissions to the court were viewed in a light most favorable to Trump the only possible conclusion is that Trump is liable. Other charges will go to trial, and that judgment is TBD.

"The documents here clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business," the judge wrote of the AG's case.
"Defendants' respond that: the documents do not say what they say; that there is no such thing as 'objective' value, and that, essentially, the Court should not believe its own eyes," he wrote.
At that point in the decision, the judge inserted a footnote, citing no less a legal source than the Marx Brothers.
"As Chico Marx, playing Chicolini, says to Margaret Dumont, playing Mrs. Gloria Teasdale, in 'Duck Soup," the footnote read, "'Well, who ya gonna believe, me or your own eyes?'"

In the days after Trump won the election in 2016 you can see in the photos and videos they both looked terrified. Trump realized that he was the dog that chased the bus and caught it unintentionally. He never wanted to win, he just wanted to ride the campaign trail as far as he could , claim the election was stolen when he lost, and use that aggrieved narrative to grift and with his brand name begin a media empire. The unique spotlight as president would bring him under the spotlight and scrutiny and as a result significant legal exposure for his decades long illegal business wrongdoings that may have gone mostly undetected otherwise. But instead of playing it straight and cool, he continued the Roy Cohn playbook of stating and and acting out his illegal intentions and acts publicly.

To think, none of this would have happened if Ivanka had never married Jared Kushner.
Jared Kushner craved power and essentially cast himself as Trump’s new Roy Cohn, and was responsible for the pivot into the Presidential race.
In his own craving for power, he destroyed the luxury and hospitality brand name that would have been the two Trump sons’ succession birthright. Trump has always been embarrassed by his sons and probably saw Kushner as the kind of son he should have had, but fatally misjudged Kushner’s abilities and motivations.

Did the DA ask for a jury trial?! It is rather extraordinary for a Judge in a civil suit to determine that fraud is so obvious that it need not be decided by a jury. Orange Hitler really sh*t the bed.

Thanks, r148. I wonder what the reasoning is? Doesn’t the defendant dictate that? You’d think Dump would prefer a jury trial, it gives him a better chance to find jurors who support him. by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 27, 2023 1:33 PM |

R150 several people have posted it is a bench trial —can’t you read?
R149 I expect that Trump did not demand a jury trial because (1) an assumption he would lose in front of a NY jury and (2) they actual thought they could get the judge removed, the charges dismissed outright, or win on their own summary judgment motion…and/or quickly appeal as needed.

I'm not going to post it here because there's too much of it, but Trump has been melting down on Truth Social all day today, in addition to a separate tractate he put out as a press release. This one obviously got to him, he keeps repeating over and over again that he's worth billions more than his financial statements and that Mar-a-Lago is worth a hundred times more than the judge's $18 million evaluation.
It's also amusing how he keeps saying he had an ironclad disclaimer clause (i.e. don't believe my financial statements, "do your own research" – the QAnon folk will be happy with that shoutout, I'm sure) but then immediately says that's immaterial anyway because the banks were always happy and all the loans were paid on time. In other words, yeah I did fraud, but the banks didn't get hurt.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | September 27, 2023 6:16 PM |
R169, isn’t that $18 million evaluation the value that Palm Beach County put on Mar-a-Lago? Thus lessening the tax burden? Isn’t that the whole point of the trial? That he told the banks one thing and everyone else something else?

And many people have offered to buy Mar a Lago. Who? Well, I don’t want to embarrass them by saying their names but many people. And many people have said he has the best written “do your own research” clause. He thinks it’s foolproof.
The best part I read (could only make it 25% of the way through because it was so maddening and it’s really long)was about when Trump became president and said he would turn his businesses over to his sons. A special lawyer was hired to head the Trust or whatever it was. A very well respected lawyer, the best one in the US, came highly recommended. What was him name? I dunno.
IIRC Ivanka was named in this case as well because it includes his business practices before he became president, starting in 2011 I think.

I've been steamed about this whole fraud thing because the state of New York, the city of New York, the fucking federal government, IRS and DoJ KNEW that Trump has been committing fraud for YEARS. Long before he ran for POTUS, back when the media was creating this false public image of the successful businessman/ celebrity. And that brings me to the media. THEY KNEW. They knew that blowhard was a fraud. And he got away with it. I saw on Twitter when this announcement broke about the judge finding him guilty of fraud, someone posted: "Thank you Michael Cohen..." I don't know if Cohen had anything to do with this, and maybe he did. But up until a few years ago he was complicit. Yes he went to prison. Lost his law license. But shit. When Trump wanted to lower his taxes, he’d claim a low valuation for a property. When he wanted to get cheap loans, he would inflate the valuation. This allowed him to inflate his claimed net worth each year, which let him obtain loans on better terms by personally guaranteeing them.

Last night my husband and I walked our Westie together, discussing this case. My husband pondered out loud, “I just don’t understand how he got away with this much fraud for that long. How is that even possible?” I said, “because he told you already — the banks and insurance companies made real fucking coin.” Wake up, America. That is the root problem of everything in our country, it’s greed. As long as the rich keep making fistfuls of cash, with “victimless” white-collared crimes, we will continue to look the other way. We are a country who makes the wealthy into celebrities. We literally *worship* the rich. So as long as long no one “gets hurt”, there are zero consequences.
And add to that, in the first couple of decades, he was protected by the mob. Then, as our country neutered organized crime, who filled the void of the mob? Fucking corporations. So as Trump’s protection from the mob slowly deflated, his new protectors were the corporate mobsters who run our global economy. Until we deal with these hard truths, new Trump-figures will continue to sprout up. It’s Wack-a-mole. Destroy Trump? There are 200 new Trump’s to take his place. He is the symptom, he’s not the disease. Our country *cannot* fix itself until we come to terms with corporate greed.

Michael Cohen most certainly had something to do with it. In fact, when Letitia James first filed the civil case last year, she stated, “I will remind everyone that this investigation only started after Michael Cohen, his former lawyer, testified before Congress and shed light on this misconduct.”
It all goes back to the hush money payments he made on Trump's behalf to Stormy Daniels. Cohen was arrested, tried, convicted, and sent to prison. Trump became President. But Cohen knew where a lot of the bodies were buried (figuratively speaking) and began talking. I find his role in all of this fascinating. Going from Trump's lawyer/"fixer" to the person who is instrumental in bringing him down. There's something almost Shakespearian about it.

by Anonymous | reply 232 | September 28, 2023 12:22 AM |
R215, as we know, banks are never really at risk for what they do. Deutsche Bank will ultimately be bailed out by the German taxpayers, because it would be an international problem if it failed. The biggest crimes have no consequences.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | September 28, 2023 12:55 AM |
All banks have regulatory requirements to have processes in place that alerts them when certain red flags or patterns of financial crimes occur in a customer account. Deutsche Bank's investigators reviewed cases involving Trump's account activity and determined that they met the standards that required the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) and drafted the reports for filing. Apparently someone in management decided to quash the filing without good reason. You one decided not to file the report of the red flags are considered to be resolved. If however the red flags are either unresolved or confirmed as fact, filing SARs is regulatory requirement as per the Bank Secrecy Act.It is obvious someone within Deutsche Bank overrode the decision to file the reports, so they are complicit with Trump. It would be interesting to learn who it was and what the repercussions were by the bank's regulators.

No, he is not banned from travelling internationally, that restriction was never sought by any prosecutorial team in any of his cases so far.

R234, wasn’t it Supreme Court Justice Kennedy’s son…
“Justin Kennedy worked… for Deutsche Bank from 1997 to 2009; he became its global head of real estate capital markets. During his time at Deutsche Bank he helped Donald Trump secure a $640 million loan for a Chicago real estate project”
and then Ivanka sweet talked him—she was oh, so interested, in jurisprudence—into resigning so her father could appoint Gorsuch whose mother had tried to gut the EPA when she was head of it in the Reagan years and was cited for contempt of Congress and eventually forced to resign. It’s a sewer.

[quote]it's like a stake to his heart when people badmouth it, or in this case value it for what it's actually worth. That and the small hands jab is probably what gets to him the most.
One of Trump's most salient NPD trait is his grandiosity. For the people with grandiose NPD, the worst thing is to be considered a loser. That's why he's risking prison with his big lie and the crazy conspiracy theories that come with it, than admit he lost and move on freely in his life.
That's also why I want to see him end up poor and destitute, and GAGGED, unable to put a spin on his dereliction by any mean to the outside world, because even if his body will live on, for a while, he'll be utterly destroyed psychologically and you won't be able to see the green of the wallpaper in the dining room underneath the stains of hundreds of ketchup bottle impacts.
A person with grandiose NPD would rather live in prison knowing he's wealthy, famous, and adored by his base in the outside world, than in the comfort of house arrest as an ostracized penniless loser.

R239 are you an idiot? Because only an idiot would think that Ivanka Trump would have spoken to Anthony Kennedy to (successfully) convince him to retire from the USSC. Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds…

R243, I’m not the OP, but Ivanka was working in the WH supporting daddy dearest. How is it out of the realm of possibility that she influenced Anthony Kennedy into resigning?

by Anonymous | reply 248 | September 28, 2023 3:06 PM |
Found it:
“Trump’s flattery,” Enrich writes, “was part of a coordinated White House charm offensive designed to persuade the ageing justice – for years, the court’s pivotal swing vote – that it was safe to retire, even with an unpredictable man in the Oval Office.”
“Dark Towers describes how Ivanka Trump befriended the judge, sitting next to him at an inaugural lunch, regaling him with accounts of her close friendship with his son, then visiting the elder Kennedy at the supreme court, bringing her five year-old daughter to hear a case about arbitration agreements.”
I was wrong, it was for Kavenaugh, not Gorsuch. The review goes into more depth about the Trump/Kennedy’s son relationship which continued after he left DB.
Ivanka and her breathless little girl voice. No fool like an old fool.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | September 28, 2023 3:24 PM |
Kennedy may have taken to Ivanka, but if anyone persuaded him to resign from the bench, which is a big fucking deal, it wasn't her. It was connected to the DB mess his son was in. Ivanka was very open in courting Kennedy. This IMO was deliberate because it looked bad especially with his Son implicated in the DB scandal. That put pressure on him. He was strong armed by Trump and some invisible supporters (Russian Oligarchs?) to step down. And Kavanaugh was part of this, because he clerked for Kennedy and was a protege. The whole thing stinks of corruption, but the only role Ivanka played was to be a conspicuous friend at an inopportune time. And the old guy was too dumb to see he was being courted.

Is it me or was the DB scandal quashed? We hardly heard a thing about it here in the U.S. Well, unless you read in depth pieces in the Economist or The Atlantic, or you read Vox or other non mainstream stuff. Our press may have reported it, but they didn't cover it. It deserved coverage, especially the Kennedy/Kavanaugh connections. And of course Trump. So much wrong doing and it was barely noticed.

R254, it was that important. Especially since it involved bank executives who were connected to Supreme Court justices and a President and his f amily. Our U.S. based journalists dropped the ball big time.

I recall reading about the Deutsche Bank and Justin Kennedy's alleged role in stopping the filing of the Suspicious Activity Reports, but do not recall what developed after that. At the very least the bank regulators would have been all over it. I work for bank in anti money laundering investigations and this is the a textbook case of something that would not only have resulted in executive heads rolled but would have brought significant regulatory scrutiny and penalties.

R258, Deutsche Bank has paid at least $800 million to various regulators since 2017 due to its Russia-centered money-laundering activities. (Of course, that's nothing compared to the $14 billion it had to pay to the U.S. in 2013 for mortgage fraud). It had to cough up $186 million just a few months ago due to its failure to institute anti-money laundering controls. The place is just a blur of corruption at this point.

Still more:
Justin Kennedy, who ran the German bank’s commercial real estate team and was close with the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, was willing to overlook Trump’s shoddy history as a debtor, getting the future president to personally guarantee $40 million of the loan…
Kennedy’s other son, Gregory Kennedy, allegedly met with White House counselor Kellyanne Conway during a dinner just days after the president’s inauguration.
No one was happier about the outcome of the election than his father, Gregory Kennedy said, according to the book. Anthony Kennedy had been nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, and Marcus wrote that Anthony Kennedy wanted to be replaced on the high court by another Republican.
“That’s good to know,” Conway replied, according to the book. “That happiness has consequences.” In a footnote, Marcus said Gregory Kennedy denied that account.

R88 "What a shitty fucked up family."
After reading Mary Trump's first book (in sections, because the subject matter disgusted me), this is one thousand percent correct (it doesn't take a book read to figure that out, I know).
Trump's father was a sociopath, his mother was mentally ill (shocking, I know), needy, yet neglectful and selfish. She used the children to comfort her, but did not reciprocate. She also developed severely debilitating osteoporosis in her later years, anf eas even mugged and beated at age 79, sustsaining multiple broken ribs, among other things.
But all that doesn't even close to making up for birthing that narcissistic, maniacal trash.
