Surprising plot revelation

The film is actually centered around Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays an author of a spy novel series called Argylle. She accidentally incorporates a real life spy plot in her novel by coincidence, and becomes the target of assassins (I think this was the plot of Day of the Condor) and she has to go on the run with her beloved cat in her backpack.

Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa and others play the characters in her novel who appear as film-within-a-film sequences.

The film was marketed presale as being based on an upcoming novel by Elly Conway. Elly Conway does not exist and some suspected that the film was written by AI. Elly Conway is the name of BDH’s character so she does not indeed exist, and there is no novel unless Matthew Vaughn wrote one himself.

It’s a very odd concept (granted it worked for Adaptation) but I assume it must have merit given the insane cast.

The CGI cat could be the dealbreaker though. It either works as meta or just is too much of a distraction.

The last time I remember a film marketed with ‘don’t give away the secret” was The Crying Game.
