This is life, the one you get, go out and have a ball!
I find that lyric terrifying and quite dark.

I always thought "so up on your feet" sounded peculiar, more like "wop on your feet". Wop is a mostly forgotten slur of the past. Here's a link so we can all sing along with utter disdain.

I feel obliged to include the absolutely disastrous version by Gloria Estefan. It's actually amazing how awful this updated version is.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 26, 2023 3:46 PM |
R10 the critics all gushed over that mess at the time
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 26, 2023 3:59 PM |
R10 there's nothing wrong with that version, other than it's not the original, and was tailored to the reboot.
I'm not an Estefan fan, but it was perfectly fine for the reboot, which I enjoyed.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 26, 2023 4:50 PM |
I'd still like to be the filling in a Boyd Gaines/Michael Lembeck sandwich.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 26, 2023 4:52 PM |
Did they decide to go ethnic for the reboot? Never watched it.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 26, 2023 5:02 PM |
R14 Yes, it was a Latino family.
It was less of a reboot and more of a "reimagining." The set was the same, but it was based in LA. The only other similarity was that the landlord's name was Schneider. But he was played by the much hotter Todd Grinnell.

But why do they keep recycling white stuff? They're creative people they should come up with something on their own instead of plopping POCs into a white world.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 26, 2023 6:48 PM |
Because shit gets made when old white people put people of color into commercials and/or TV shows.
Right now, things may be getting more "diverse" but with a very few exceptions, old white dudes are still in charge.

I've been watching ODaaT on Tubi and they got rid of Mackenzie Phillips with a quickness!
They'd just married her off to Michael Lembeck five or six episodes before, and suddenly BOOM Max walks in and tells Annie he's been transferred to Texas and they're moving, bye! Julie doesn't even come with him to tell her Mom and sister goodbye. She's just GONE.
Did they find her with a needle actually in her arm, or what?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 26, 2023 7:54 PM |
Also, can you imagine being poor Michael Lembeck? He's cast as a regular on a top 10 show then his TV wife is fired and he's gone.
He was hot and deserved better.

R18 yeah, I remember they wrote her out *snap* THAT quick. I think she did relapse or something happened, I seem to remember it making the newspapers.

It was so cute AND they even got Ginny in there!

Fuck Bonnie Franklin! I was much cuter, and I could sing!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 26, 2023 10:29 PM |
Bonnie's voice is incredible in that intro song, regardless of the stupid lyrics. She is really underrated as a singer.

TV has improved so much since this era. It is unbelieveable that our viewing options consisted of this dreck back in this time.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 29, 2023 3:45 PM |
Was this show kept afloat solely by VB's star power at that time? I feel like this wouldn't last one season if it debuted now (with the original cast).
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 29, 2023 3:47 PM |
Not in the first two seasons. After that VB was the star. A little bit after ODAAT Val had a series on called Cafe Americain. It only lasted one season. Which was too bad. It was really, really good. Plus she was fucking Jameson Parker in his P.R.I.M.E. I'll always give her credit for that.

I always liked the Romanos' apartment, although I did feel sorry for Barbara having to sleep in the alcove because it was only a two-bedroom. Now that I think about it, it was very much like the Evanses' apartment in "Good Times."
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 29, 2023 4:18 PM |
Barbara never slept in the alcove. Her and Julie shared a room. That little gay kid slept in the alcove.
