Was she very funny?
Totie Fields-was she a gay icon?

She knew how to handle a young Gene Simmons.

She was hilarious. When I was a kid my family and I would watch her on Merv and Mike Douglas.

I’ve long gotten a kick out of her work. She was hysterical in “Here’s Lucy” as the jealous wife of a milkman.
She also had some great jokes on the Dean Martin Roast of Lucille Ball.
“Totie, come on over, we’re gonna have a pot party…I went over. She was sellin’ tupperware!”

I thought you meant Tootie from the facts of life. She is an icon.

She was a standup broad, as opposed to standup comedian. Did not view video mentioned above. If it was the one where she complained about hose or pantyhose, she was later inundated with samples from manufacturers. Remember her saying about one "this one really sucks onto your leg!"

I only remember her after she lost that leg.

Totie only did one record but it's really great.

She had a fabulous voice. She would have been great on Broadway in HELLO, DOLLY!

Groucho Marx said Totie (whom the producers favored) was "too Jewish" to play his mother in the musical "Minnie's Boys," and then approved the casting of Shelley Winters (also Jewish) partly because he admired her "big knockers." Big knockers were no substitute for big pipes. The musical was a flop.

Totie would have been brilliant as Matron in Chicago

[ R 4 } Love Totie and Merv together. What a great clip! Brings back memories of watching his show everyday after school as a young gayling.

“You should have seen him before the show. Banging on my door, banging on my door…I had to let him out!”

There was a bit on Merv where she and Arthur Treacher stood next to each other and obv he towered over her. Then they sat down on the couch and were the same height.

She was loud. Many people equate loud with funny. I think she was professionally charming & likable, but she needed better material.
