The NFL: “Your Super Bowl halftime show is Usher. It was the best we could do.”

How many “No’s” must they have gone through before they got down to Usher?

I’d shudder to see who was the name right below Usher on that list. Maybe Pitbull?

by Anonymousreply 1September 24, 2023 2:09 PM

“We even asked everyone who currently has a Las Vegas residency. They all said no.”

by Anonymousreply 2September 24, 2023 2:25 PM

iirc his last halftime show with the Black Eyed Peas was pretty awful.

I can’t believe Macklemore and Ryan Lewis turned us down! Who’s next? Smash Mouth, they can’t be busy! What? He’s dead? Who’s next? Oh, Usher.

by Anonymousreply 9September 24, 2023 3:03 PM

His Vegas residency is a hit! He's back in fashion. And still cute.

by Anonymousreply 10September 24, 2023 3:05 PM

Taylor Swift was the first choice, but she's much too big for that small stage. Just surprised it's not Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion or some other "classy act."

I vote for the Denver cast of " Beetlejuice."

by Anonymousreply 12September 24, 2023 3:08 PM

I do find this strange. Isn't the Halftime show supposed to be an incredibly coveted event for most artists, because it supposedly provides them with enormous amounts of free publicity and projection around the world?

I know that many people outside the US couldn't care any less about American football and only tune in for the Halftime show (it's all that is ever mentioned in non-US media), so I would have imagined that there would be a long queue of current and past stars wanting to take the gig.

by Anonymousreply 13September 24, 2023 3:09 PM

So lame.

by Anonymousreply 14September 24, 2023 3:12 PM

His act will feature the Vienna Boys Choir.

by Anonymousreply 15September 24, 2023 3:12 PM

Oh, really? They couldn’t get anyone else?

Is this 2010?

by Anonymousreply 16September 24, 2023 3:18 PM

I think the problem with the halftime show is the "stars" have to come up with production money. Then people criticize and say the show sucked compared to Prince. So kind of lose/lose.

by Anonymousreply 17September 24, 2023 3:51 PM

Boring. No one knows him or his music. Where’s Anne Murray?

by Anonymousreply 18September 24, 2023 3:56 PM

Can someone remind me again why people think Usher is gay.

by Anonymousreply 19September 24, 2023 3:59 PM

R18 Usher has been around for almost 30 years. PLENTY of people know his music. Probably nobody your age tho. He'll do fine.

by Anonymousreply 29September 24, 2023 6:33 PM

Gen Z does not have any superstars that would be eligible for this. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 30September 24, 2023 7:45 PM

[quote]Gen Z does not have any superstars that would be eligible for this.

Of course they don't yet, it's a stage for legacy acts.

by Anonymousreply 31September 24, 2023 7:48 PM

R1, Wayne Newton.

by Anonymousreply 32September 24, 2023 7:56 PM

I think Miley Cyrus would be a good choice. At least she has recent hit songs.

by Anonymousreply 33September 24, 2023 8:43 PM

I think someone up above hit on it. There's a lot of pressure on the act to out wow compared to previous performances. The country one they did back in 1994 looks like it might've been good. I'll have to check it out.

When was the last time Usher had a hit on the radio?

by Anonymousreply 40September 24, 2023 9:54 PM

Brendan Urie/Panic at the Disco would have been a great choice because he’s from Las Vegas. Who knows, maybe they asked him and he said no.

by Anonymousreply 41September 24, 2023 9:57 PM

Agree with others: It's a weird choice. He does have some huge hits.

But after snagging Madonna, Gaga, Beyonce, Snoop and the gang, Rihanna, Coldplay, etc.?

Usher feels like a huge step down.

For people who don’t understand what it was like to be a teenager in the 70s, take a look at who some of the halftime performers were back then. 1971: Anita Bryant and Up With People. 1972: Ella Fitzgerald Carol Channing, and Al Hirt. 1973: Andy Williams, Woody Herman (big band).

Up With People played numerous Superbowls into the ‘80s.

In 1987 they had George Burns and Mickey Rooney, plus Disney characters. 1988: Chubby Checker, the Rockettes, and 88 grand piano players.

Etc.

by Anonymousreply 45September 24, 2023 10:46 PM

Perhaps they could prop up Latoya Jackson and have her recreate that 3d spectacular her brother did in the 80s

by Anonymousreply 46September 24, 2023 10:49 PM

Can’t Shawn Mendes do it? He’s desperate for any publicity. Yes he talentless, but so is The Weeknd.

by Anonymousreply 47September 24, 2023 11:06 PM

I just saw the Foo Fighters last weekend. They are not my favorite, but they put on a hell of a show. And they've been around for 31 years now. So the legacy angle works. A band like the Foos would be such a better choice than fucking Usher.

by Anonymousreply 59September 25, 2023 2:44 AM

Is he 2023's Liberace?

by Anonymousreply 60September 25, 2023 3:49 AM

Usher makes sense only because the Super Bowl is in Vegas this year. So it's going to be an elaborate tourist ad to entice folks to visit Vegas, and to see his residency.

Maybe they'll drag Brandon Flowers and his new face out of the Mormon temple for a duet.

by Anonymousreply 61September 25, 2023 7:33 AM

As I think about it yeah, this stage seems to scream “Acts of my youth!” so it’s hard to imagine artists/stars of the present big enough to fill the stage. But only because I can’t really name very many… Billie Eilish? Dua Lipa? Dylan Mulvaney bringing Bud Light for all?

I remember looking forward to Bruno Mars’ performance only to be disappointed. Being wowed by Gaga. Racing off a flight to barely catch Madge’s halftime show at a friend’s SB party.

It used to be an iconic moment. Perhaps it’s fading away quickly… Boomers take note of the example! Lol

P!nk would be a solid choice in the future. Everyone knows Usher and is a good bet.

by Anonymousreply 78September 25, 2023 2:09 PM

Usher is an excellent live performer with a popular Vegas residency and decades’ worth of hits. There isn’t anybody bigger in the music industry who hasn’t already done the Superbowl gig, so I’m not sure why anyone thinks he’s a poor choice.

by Anonymousreply 79September 25, 2023 2:12 PM

What's wrong with Usher being the headliner? He was the guest star at the Black Eyed Peas performance and he was the sole bright spot in that shitty debacle. He is also an excellent performer with many hit songs, probably the biggest R&B star of the 00s. He will be much better than Maroon 5 (I know, that's not saying much, but still).

R108/R109 if either of those bands ever play the Superbowl, they will be considered the biggest sellouts of their genres, which are both anti-establishment.

by Anonymousreply 110September 26, 2023 8:08 PM

I think this actually says a lot about the job itself: memo to NFL: NO ONE WANTS IT.

by Anonymousreply 111September 26, 2023 8:09 PM

I think Metallica has been seen as sellouts by metal heads since the early 90’s

by Anonymousreply 112September 26, 2023 8:14 PM

Unless they are paired with someone else, metal bands have no shot. Given the makeup of the NFL and the current social tendencies, all performers will be black, unless it's Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga.

I’m a fan of The Weeknd, but he was not a good choice for the halftime show. He’s a singer, not a performer, which is rarity these days. The Super Bowl needs someone who can put on a good show.

I still say Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift are good choices.

My older sister just got her license and she drove us to school when Yeah! came out. It was over-played like all chart toppers but we never seemed to tire of it.

I’m not familiar with most of his subsequent stuff but generally, I liked his style. I can’t believe he’s the best the NFL could do.

Hi, Usher! Does Bieber's asshole taste like strawberries and chocolate?

by Anonymousreply 168September 30, 2023 2:32 PM

Honestly, it's not as bad a choice as it first seemed. I mean, ok, relevance. He hasn't had a big hit in over a decade. But he does have 9 no.1 hits. I think the crowd will struggle through it even if we aren't experts on him or R&B. A few of these songs people don't know they know em.

Such a small universe of performers who 1) want to do it 2) can pay $8-10 million for the production out of their own pockets 3) have enough hits known to Americans of all ages. It's been 15-20 years since pop culture hit the internet and shattered into a thousand different audiences. There may be no more Michael Jacksons, Whitneys, Madonnas, or even Britneys. And the aging megastars who are still around are just gonna get older and less relevant to the under 40 demographic.

by Anonymousreply 175September 30, 2023 10:50 PM

Exactly r175, those megastars with mass appeal will be fewer. Big names have declined doing the Superbowl because its just not worth the time effort and resources, they can make a ton of money doing a show with their real fans instead.

Even in the last 10-15 years most of the shows are collaboration efforts with multiple artists performing hits. I know Usher will probably have guests like TLC , Lil Jon etc other artists from Atlanta with big hits

Why didn't they get Janet Jackson? She's desperate for any attention or work she can get and it went really well last time she did it.

by Anonymousreply 193January 15, 2024 12:12 AM

Didn't read the entire thread - but Usher ALREADY DID THIS IN 2011! Not as the main act, but still.

Hopefully there will be a great series of other acts. Usher does have some great party songs - so no hate there.

Usher is back in the public eye on the tails of his remix of Jungkook's " Standing Next to You"( an homage to MJ) which hit #7 on US itunes in 2 hrs. Unfortunately, Jungkook as well as all of the BTS members are currently serving in the South Korean military, so he would be unable to join Usher at the SB.

[quote]Notably, within an impressive timespan of just 2 hours, the Jungkook and Usher remix secures a commendable seventh place on the US iTunes chart, surpassing tracks by renowned artists like Taylor Swift and Jack Harlow. The dynamic duo's accomplishment swiftly becomes a topic of discussion, captivating music enthusiasts globally.

So, the young ones will now have heard of Usher in time for the SB.

R183 Justin Bieber is on career hiatus. Ariana Grande is not a great live performer. Rihanna just did the gig (and people complained that it was boring). Taylor Swift is going to be on tour in Japan when the Super Bowl is happening.

Ed Sheeran’s got the hits but he just stands there and strums his guitar, not exactly a Super Bowl type of act. Are the rest of the people you listed comparable to Usher in terms of number of hits or how entertaining of a live performer they are? No. He’s gonna put on a good show, I don’t know why folks are objecting.

by Anonymousreply 206January 20, 2024 11:41 AM

I could see Imagine Dragons doing the halftime show. They have enough hits and are very theatrical. Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, The Cure or some other 80s extravaganza could work too. They could sprinkle in some collaborations with some contemporary artists. Hopefully the halftime show won't become an I Heart Radio mini concert without any one headliner, but I can see them going that route one day.

by Anonymousreply 207January 20, 2024 12:19 PM

Madonna’s was the best. It was. Spectacle. Good music. Continuity. Flash.

And the Illuminati symbolism.

Everyone is criticizing Post Malone being picked to sing America the Beautiful. I have a feeling he's going to nail it and be one of the surprises of the Super Bowl. It's an odd pick for sure but I'm looking forward to it.

by Anonymousreply 210January 20, 2024 1:26 PM

He'll add all his vocal masturbation techniques and make the song barely recognizable.

by Anonymousreply 211January 20, 2024 1:38 PM

As he gets older Usher's starting to look freakish. He's sort of a pinhead (of the zippy type) and the permed hair job doesn't help.

by Anonymousreply 214February 3, 2024 4:39 AM

He’s weird in the face area and his music is boring and dated. Maybe they should just let people go up and sing karaoke.

I’m actually looking forward to this.

Imagine all the cameos we could get for Love In This Club: Jeezy, Keri Hilson, Kanye West, Diddy, Nelly, Rick Ross, Robin Thicke, Beyonce, Lil Wayne.

Then if you take the Hustlers scene, Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Keke Palmer; Lili Reinhardt, Trace Lysette and Lizzo could be stripping on stage.
