Where's the cheapest, nicest place to go within three hours of Houston?

I went to Galveston today and the crowd was upscale trash.

by Anonymousreply 29September 25, 2023 2:36 AM

Nowhere.

Get on a plane and get the hell out of Texas.

by Anonymousreply 1September 23, 2023 10:20 PM

San Antonio. Don't miss the Alamo Basement. Say hi to Pedro and Inez for me.

by Anonymousreply 2September 23, 2023 10:24 PM

Eye-nez.

by Anonymousreply 3September 23, 2023 10:26 PM

R2 San Antonio is a shithole.

by Anonymousreply 4September 23, 2023 10:26 PM

To sleep.

by Anonymousreply 5September 23, 2023 10:27 PM

I lived in San Antonio when I was a kid and agree that's probably the best. I thought there might be a hidden gem I have forgotten about, but I don't think there is.

Once you're finished visiting the Alamo and the River Walk, well, you're pretty much finished with San Antonio.

by Anonymousreply 7September 23, 2023 10:32 PM

the Rothko chapel

by Anonymousreply 8September 23, 2023 10:32 PM

Corpus Christi?

by Anonymousreply 9September 23, 2023 10:33 PM

What about the McNay and the Market? Those are fun in San Antonio. And then Boerne is nice.

by Anonymousreply 10September 23, 2023 10:36 PM

Austin. Go to Hippie Hollow and float on your back on a raft drinking beer. Then have some cheap authentic Mexican food.

Don't forget the sunscreen. The skin on which your pubic hair grows will thank you. Most people forget to fill them with sunscreen.

[quote]San Antonio is a shithole.

That's a step up from the rest of Texas.

A three hour radius extends to the Dallas suburbs

You really can’t find anything interesting to do in here? You can go from Hill Country to Cajun Country.

San Antonio is fun. I have to go for work every so often.

by Anonymousreply 15September 23, 2023 10:55 PM

I like it, but I don't think my boyfriend would like Cajun country. Wow, I didn't know about the garden in Orange. Thanks!

by Anonymousreply 16September 23, 2023 11:00 PM

I thought Charles Barkley was joking but the people really are incredibly fat in San Antonio.

by Anonymousreply 17September 23, 2023 11:53 PM

College Station or Lake Charles, LA.

by Anonymousreply 18September 24, 2023 12:03 AM

Nevermind. I thought you meant to live near Houston. But Lake Charles has a nice casino, Labourge.

by Anonymousreply 19September 24, 2023 12:13 AM

I'd try the 3 hour flights at the bottom of this.

I like the casinos in Lake Charles and Cajun Country in general, but my boyfriend does not. We were trying to find a state park near decent hotels in our part of the state.

by Anonymousreply 21September 24, 2023 12:25 AM

Try Fredericksburg and the surrounding Hill Country . Gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 22September 24, 2023 12:26 AM

Bless your heart, R4.

Wrong: the McNay and the Witte are lovely museums. The Witte just went through a $100 million renovation and is now partnered with the Smithsonian. (A gallerist in SA told me this last week and I’m too lazy to confirm it.)

Also in San Antonio: HogWild Records, a great, old-school record store.

Lastly, I love Galveston: the history is incredible (my house there was built three years after the Great Storm and still has posts from 1903) and the Grand Galvez hotel just went through a lovely renovation and has excellent cocktails. The Strand is OK for shopping but don’t miss the gorgeous opera house and the railroad museum. Also, Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are nesting there for the first time in years, so the island has been keeping itself cleaner for the wildlife.

Lastly, this cute motel has either already opened or is opening soon right on the Seawall.

There’s a lot of neat stuff to see there if you look for it.

We spent some time in the Fredericksburg area and enjoyed it. A touristy town but now that Oktoberfest is in full swing might be fun to go

by Anonymousreply 25September 24, 2023 1:42 AM

Definitely Tyler.

by Anonymousreply 26September 24, 2023 1:44 AM

Go see Chip- and Joanna-ville in Waco.

by Anonymousreply 27September 24, 2023 1:50 AM

Can you get to Amarillo by morning?
