Do you have an internal dialogue?

Or a running commentary? Some people are just animals and function, while others seem to have a conscience or an internal self that can debate with them or just reflect upon.

My "internal dialogue" is just a non-stop series of incoherent ramblings, arguments, etc. "No matter what, do NOT eat any more cookies." "Oh, go ahead, life is short." "Definitely, not you disgusting slob."

I often mumble mine out loud while shopping, traveling, etc. Thank goodness for deactivated AirPods; it was much more socially debilitating in the old days.

My internal dialog is so witty, OP, that I have an internal W/W system.

I have a chronic health condition that can make simple things hard to plow through. So I use my internal monologue as my personal cheering section. When I'm doing anything that's taxing physically my internal voice walks me through it, "Come on, you can do it. Great job! You're almost done." It also looks out for me by telling me not to trip or fall when I'm in slippery situations like the shower.

I wish I could turn it off

There are those with NO internal dialogue that blurt out anything in their heads. These minds are built for Twitter. I had a Twitter account. Have lots of thoughts during the day. Most of the didn't merit expression. My my account was deleted by Twitter for lack of use.

After the Lack of Inner Dialogists have uttered whatever unsolicited insult you act hurt, they say "you're too sensitive" and "I'm just being honest. As if this were a virtue. They want to "say" things but not "own" them. And they don't want the responsibility of their actions.

Most of the time, I have an endless chorus of voices all competing with each other for attention and to be heard over two or three songs that come in and out.

by Anonymousreply 7September 24, 2023 2:22 AM

Not internal. I talk to myself all the time.

by Anonymousreply 8September 24, 2023 2:32 AM

My inner voice keeps telling me to don armor and save France for some bizarre reason. I don't even have a passport.

by Anonymousreply 9September 24, 2023 2:39 AM

The Voices tell me where to bury the bodies.

How the fuck does anyone not have an internal dialogue? Maybe only deaf or mute people don’t have one.

by Anonymousreply 11September 24, 2023 2:43 AM

Well, Rep 11 DEAR you apparently DON'T have one.

There are people with no thoughts (my ex said he never dreams). Everything in their brain is happening in real time.

by Anonymousreply 13September 24, 2023 3:54 PM

I thought everybody heard sounds constantly, but then I found out it was tinnitus. I like to pretend it’s aliens sending messages and that someday I’ll break the code.

So, r13, he never thinks before he says something? He never takes time to consider doing something before he does it?

by Anonymousreply 15September 24, 2023 4:19 PM

Yes. I kill white people on this one.

by Anonymousreply 16September 24, 2023 4:23 PM

I have intrusive existential/philosophical thoughts daily, especially when I'm doing or experiencing something I don't enjoy.
