Britain to be smoke free by 2030
PM Sunak is considering anti-smoking legislation similar to that introduced by New Zealand last year, which includes a prohibition on selling tobacco to anybody born on or after January 1, 2009, according to the reports.
So basically, the new world goal seems to be, “let’s create an entire generation of schizophrenics”. It is generally accepted that nicotine lessens or takes away the symptoms of schizophrenia, while increased marijuana use and ingestion of THC increases schizophrenic symptoms. Very bizarre.

What will they do to tobacco dealers and buyers?
Is this an extension on the War on Drugs?
Lots of opportunity here, both for drug kingpins and investors in the carceral industry.

Not just kingpins, small-time drug dealers could clean up too.
Maybe I'll move across and get rich. "Psst, kid, fancy a fag?"

Never heard that before, but I'm too lazy to even Google it. Maybe later.

If we treated a product that kills almost half a million people per year in the US alone the same way we treated any consumer product that kills, cigarettes would have been outlawed YEARS ago. The same should be said of guns.
Smoking kills people at an alarming rate. And yet, here you are defending it, r16.

Alcohol is probably the worst drug that is being used by the masses, and causes more long-term health issues, and yet nobody is discussing banning it. Why? Because it didn't work 100 years ago. If people want to use alcohol, or smoke, or take drugs, as long as there is credible public service information about the harms, then that should be it.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances out there. Alcohol can also be addicting, but it doesn't have a substance in it KNOWN to cause addiction. In other words, there are a lot of people who never get addicted to alcohol but can still enjoy a drink every now and then. But the same cannot be said about nicotine.

Banning smoking publicly is a good thing. I can walk into a bar and not be affected physically by someone near me drinking. But someone smoking near me threatens MY health and it absolutely should be banned in public spaces EVERYWHERE.

I’m strongly in favor of letting people decide what vices to cling to.
That said, smoking exacts a huge cost on the healthcare system. Britain’s system is nationalized so everyone is paying for it.
I wish there was a way for smokers to opt to be financially responsible for the consequences.
But it’s hard stuff. Look at the US efforts in certain geographies to tax soda. That’s because of how it contributes to diabetes and other conditions. But then should we tax cakes? And how do we know the exact cause of every illness?
It’s really tricky because there is a huge financial cost to these vices. (And I’m an hour away from my martini and, yes, they can exact a cost.)

I don't agree. I've never once smoked and I don't want people smoking indoors near me, but if they want to smoke in their homes I don't care.

Two things: 1. I'm a nonsmoker who admits to being overly sensitive to smoke. Can detect smoke hundreds of feet away. Don't want to be around as it is irritating to my lungs and throat. Smokers don't want to admit they're like heroin addicts. Just observe the behavior of a smoker who hasn't got his regular nicotine fix. 2. England's ban may be ironic and pointless when the climate declines further and there is smoke everywhere.

So he's (rightly) concerned about people breathing in cigarette smoke, but people breathing polluted air in London, or anywhere else considering an ULEZ, can go fuck themselves?

When Beverly Hills banned smoking they banned it everywhere, with the exception of cigar clubs which super wealthy and powerful men like Schwarzenegger go to.

Looking at the percentages supposedly 15% smoke in the UK and 23% in the USA. One in four of Americans smoke? I find that hard to believe. There must be some hardcore smoking states skewing the numbers because it’s not even close to that around here. London and the UK in general seem way smokier when I’ve been there, but what do I know.
