What skeletons are in his closet?
A black Democrat becomes a Republican because of issues of crime and homelessness. Just the beginning of a major switch. Crime affects POC to a large extent and they want to see tougher policies currently not favored by Democrats.

This Texas political observer believes it’s because Cornyn is grooming him to be his replacement
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 22, 2023 5:42 PM |
Other people noticed this. It’s not about policies, he is courting people in power to advance his career. Many politicians are the worst kind of people with no values other than obtaining power. He wants statewide office and cannot do that as a Democrat. Only option is to switch parties.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 22, 2023 5:45 PM |
GOP politicians switch to the Democratic Party and Democrats switch to GOP. It’s not terribly unusual.

He’s been courting right wing Texas money from the Deason family for a while. He was always in their pocket.
R5 = idiot

r1 and r5 are so amateur in their trolling.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 22, 2023 5:54 PM |
This political observer (right wing) makes an interesting suggestion that the Texas power brokers were recruiting him because they don’t want Chip Roy (very far right) to be the nominee when Cornyn retires
Roy may win the GOP nomination but could struggle in the general given Texas’ demographic shift
They want to stave that off by offering a Republican lackey who will do whatever they say
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 22, 2023 5:59 PM |
It's got nothing to do with Democrats and crime. The NYC mayor and incoming mayor of Philly are both Black Democrats who ran as law and order candidates.

Another Uncle Tom who thinks he has a place at the Republican table until they send him back to the kitchen 🙄
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 22, 2023 6:11 PM |
He’s parroting right wing talking points so he can win a primary election. He will have had being a black Democrat in a city used against him. He needs to rebrand himself so he can get nominated. TPTB don’t want the far right Roy because he won’t do what they say.

Republicans are wise to court moderates, as the Democrats keep going farther left to irrelevance.

[quote] This is not going over well in deep blue Dallas, let’s just say that. Donors are bombarding him demanding their money back that funded his campaign & voters feel like they were conned…because well, they were. There’s such an uproar here locally, he won’t last another week

Because Cruz is running for reelection
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 22, 2023 7:21 PM |
It’s actually very interesting that this is happening and that the Texas GOP cannot find anyone else to position for replacing Cornyn
It shows how much that party is splintering by infighting (Ken Paxton, et al)
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 22, 2023 7:26 PM |
If Johnson had run for Mayor as a moderate Republican all along he might have had a future… changing parties really won’t get him far, who is his base now? White Republicans in the Texas exurbs aren’t going to vote for him, rural voters won’t vote for him in the Primary.
Abortion access will be presumably be a huge issue in a Texas GOP Primary, are they going to nominate a former Democrat who I assume supported abortion rights?

It’s still the case that if you have statewide ambitions - or beyond - it’s best to be a Republican pol in Texas.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 22, 2023 7:34 PM |
It ought to be illegal to be elected as a Dem and then switch after elected.

While in the here and now, I generally agree that switching parties should force a recall election as the person was elected under false pretenses, in an ideal world we'd elect people based on policy, not party.
As we don't live in a fantasy world and policy and party are usually intricately interwoven, a recall campaign should begin immediately. I hope they start one soon.

R22, surely you wouldn’t favor a law that forbade an elected Republican from changing parties while on office, would you?

In his own words.
Unfortunately, many of our cities are in disarray. Mayors and other local elected officials have failed to make public safety a priority or to exercise fiscal restraint. Most of these local leaders are proud Democrats who view cities as laboratories for liberalism rather than as havens for opportunity and free enterprise.
Too often, local tax dollars are spent on policies that exacerbate homelessness, coddle criminals and make it harder for ordinary people to make a living. And too many local Democrats insist on virtue signaling—proposing half-baked government programs that aim to solve every single societal ill—and on finding new ways to thumb their noses at Republicans at the state or federal level. Enough. This makes for good headlines, but not for safer, stronger, more vibrant cities.
In the coming years, I will continue to pursue my three-pronged goal for Dallas: to become the safest major city in America with the best park system in Texas and the lowest taxes in our fast-growing North Texas region.
And I intend to keep the promise I made to Dallas voters in 2019 and refrain from endorsing candidates seeking partisan political office while I am mayor. This is about promoting policies and principles, not personalities and politicians.
Still, with my change in party affiliation, I recognize that the number of Republican mayors leading the nation’s 10 largest cities has increased from zero to one. This is hardly a red wave. But it is clear that the nation and its cities have reached a time for choosing. And the overwhelming majority of Americans who call our cities home deserve to have real choices—not “progressive” echo chambers—at city hall.

I remember when Ben Nighthorse Campbell did this in Colorado, and boy did that piss off a lot of people, including me. He managed to get reelected after (he was in the Senate) by sucking up to the rural areas, and the Fundies in Colorado Springs.
If you want to change parties, go ahead, but you need to wait until your elected term is up, and then run again for the other party. Switching mid-term is a betrayal of the people that voted for you.

A black man Republican ? Stockholm syndrome or maybe a big fat payday. I have been thinking the same with the Orange turd. Why would people be so in love with their abuser. To vote for turd man you’d have to be harboring some serious misconceptions about reality.

In other words, I will do fuck all about homelessness no matter what else I say, but I will ensure that every rich asshole gets a tax cut and will let the cops kill anybody they feel like. On the plus side, I may allow some nice parks to get created, assuming rich developers don't want the space for condos.

R1 wrote "A black Democrat becomes a Republican because of issues of crime and homelessness. Just the beginning of a major switch. Crime affects POC to a large extent and they want to see tougher policies currently not favored by Democrats."
I wish this person could get banned from the site. It's not an idiot conservative who repeats what they hear on Newsmax. It's a person being paid to spread certain messages. Any Democrat or media personality with a following can become a multi-millionaire by switching to the Republican party and repeating certain messages. We saw this with Tulsi Gabbard. She didn't switch parties as much as she switched media talking points. It's gross.
We can tell R1 is a paid shill because its repeating ugly conservative talking points but the giveaway is that "just the beginning of a major switch" -- they always say this. Not sure what it accomplishes. But that's what the conservative media wants them to say.

And promises to slash crime and homelessness while cutting taxes. Which is, of course, impossible. But the rubes eat it up.

Maybe party affiliation should be removed from the ballot, so people can't absurdly say later they weren't actually voting for the person whose name is on the ballot.
