Would his estate still be liable for all the civil lawsuits? Would they all just evaporate? Would there be any money left? Would Don Jr. go on a massive coke binge? I think he has no intention of going back to Washington. He's not stupid; he ran in 2016 because he knew he could surf on the Obama prosperity wave for 4 years. That wave is gone. And an 80-yr. old Trump cannot recreate it. It would be disastrous. He just fell on a plan to blame all his indictments on political manipulations, both to avoid jail and to protect the Trump Brand*.
It's rather cruel of him to lead all his followers on. But they have had the gentlest loss of any loser in history. He never went away. In their minds he's still President. He just needs to move back into the White House.

Trump is a cult leader and his followers worship him. There are loads of other maga politicians out there but they don’t get that level of blind devotion. His demise would hasten the breakup of the GOP into 2 or more factions.

I don’t think he has as much a hold on the right as people think he has. We’re talking maybe 20% which I know sounds like a lot but still I think the majority of this country can’t stand him. I think the media spends a lot of time talking about him because they’re fascinated by him and if they would stop talking about him, he would more than likely go away but they can’t and I get that. My mother who voted for him in 2016 and 2020 can’t stand him and won’t vote for him this time if he’s a nominee and I have other family members as well so feel the same way. The GOP leaders who want and need those votes , to be elected , will follow the voters more so than the voters will follow the leaders.
The GOP will then have leaders that will need to continue to appeal to and hold these voters.
The only true way to destroy this right wing voting block is to offer a Democratic Party that those people will feel comfortable in. Sort of like 1944 1957 1966 and the Democratic Party then.
And since that will not happen I’d expect a long life for what ever right wing version or replacement of MAGA comes along.

We don’t crush them we often don’t beat them. And right now in the polls the GOP has 3 different nominees inc Trump beating Biden. So you can talk about a hated unpopular trump all you want. If you can’t beat them that is the bigger issue,

They Gerrymander, they lie, and they have help from the network news shows that get money from the same industries that buy members of Congress. The polls you're referring to are garbage polls. Many of them generated by the media to measure their effectiveness of the way Biden is being covered. The Republicans offer nothing. They use fear and hysteria augmented by their evangelicals banning books organizing immigrant caravans, and preventing abortions. I no longer watch the network news "shows." You sound foolish R75. It is a policy at the networks. They don't have to have secret meetings or band together It is all part of doing business for the. Ratings and Revenue. All you have to do is be discerning. For example, for several months every single news report mentioned inflation. and "biden's problem with inflation." Good economic news always had the "but, INFLATION!" It was obviously slanted. It was constant. Then, they introduced new polling after weeks of this, and OMG, Biden's numbers are down because of Inflation!" The reality is the polling was measuring the effectiveness of their coverage. The Media is the mouthpiece for Big Pharma and the fossil fuel industry. They are going to do the bidding of those who pay their salaries. CNN, ABC and NBC are not much better than Fox. And their coverage is sloppy and incomplete and lacks context.

One thing that unites MAGA with many on the left as brothers in arms are their total acceptance of conspiracies, There really is little difference between them or the conspiracies they believe in,

Besides that, it's not a good thing to be the state with the most people, it means more expensive housing, cost of living etc.
Right now, the Democrats are the only ones that can save democracy from turning into a theocracy should Trump and his Ilk regain power. So no one cares who's the popular girl at the dance. Some Democrats worry that their party colleagues are being far too complacent about President Biden’s chances of victory if Trump is his opponent, given the multitude of challenges the incumbent is facing.
“I’ve been talking about this for weeks and months,” New York Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf told this column. “The only good news for Biden right now is the prospect of a government shutdown, and this impeachment talk.
“But there’s rising crime around the country, the economy is lousy regardless of what Biden says, Biden is seen as old and Kamala Harris is not really liked at all.” Sheinkopf added, “If the election was held tomorrow, Trump would win.”

He is too old, he is not competent to run the country, he is corrupt, he is out of control with federal spending. Immigration! Crime!, Inflation! Hunter! No one is in charge! This is setting the table. This is the framework. They are also measuring which themes or issues have traction.
Obviously anything related to the economy has traction. People are always insecure about the economy. It doesn't matter how good things are. Let me repeat that: It doesn't matter how good things are. The media drumming it in daily, repeatedly, convinces you that the economy is in trouble. There are "early indicators..." etc. Job insecurity is a big deal too. Psychologically people are always worried that "something" will happen to their jobs.
Add to that stew out of control immigrants "invading" our southern borders! And Crime. There is a huge gap between the reality of crime and the fear of crime. Strategists know this. Law and order was a Republican battle cry going back to Nixon in the '68 campaign.
In the 2016 campaign, Hillary Clinton was subjected to 600 days of relentless negative campaigning. E-mails!!!! We watched it happen. They're doing the same thing to Joe. No one believes Joe Biden is corrupt. And there have been plenty of critics saying Hunter's legal case is bullshit. But that doesn't matter. It didn't matter that nothing Hillary had was classified at the time she had it on her personal server.
The point is that hype is all that matters. Find themes that resonate with the voters and pound away. Lie if you must. Manipulating voter behavior has been an effective strategy for the GOP for decades. Biden's age was always going to be an issue. It is the Republican's way of coming at Kamala sideways.
They will do to her what they did to Hillary. "No one likes her." Where have I heard that before. And BTW, just because someone is a "Democratic strategist" don't assume he is supportive. He may like Biden, but hate the idea of Kamala. And honestly, most of this is setting the table to go after her.
They'll make her irrelevant unless they can mock her. These are hateful people. They're very angry right now because of the indictments. And now some state AGs are going after the fake electors? That is an attack on the Republican party machinery in the states. They depend on those thugs. So they are angry and fearful and fighting like cornered animals. Cornered animals are dangerous.

[quote]It’s the independents that will or will not save democracy.
Nope, that's just lazy logic talking. Independents cant for example elect the party nominee, they just wait until dinner is served and make uneducated last minute decision. The real WORK to get someone into the Presidency was done by the Democratic party. It is true, they may have the key votes in a tight race, but independents are a pretty flighty group. They don't want to be labeled by a party so they don't put skin in the game. Then they go on to bitch about how they don't like either candidate. They want their cake and eat it too.

The only thing I disagree with R98 is " Lie if you must." The GOP does not hold out for that as the last resort like they might have two decade ago, it's now Plan A. Why bother playing games when lying has worked so effectively? Marjory Taylor Green and her ilk not only recognize this, it's their basic strategy for success. That's why they have no fear of being called out for doing it. They dont care what people say, it still works and that's all the matters to them.

28% of the country consider themselves to be Dems
44% of the country consider themselves independents. Some lean one way some lean another some don’t lean at all.,

R111 has the comprehension skills of a frog. It's not about who has the most numbers, it's not a child's board game. Again, It's the parties that do the work. Who raise the money, who pick the nominee, who buy the ads, who campaign for 2 years before an election. If the Democrats or Republicans just sat out the race, you would be left with no choice except the one and only candidate on the ballot.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | September 25, 2023 12:24 PM |

We are talking about two different things. And you are not wrong about the work both parties do. You are talking about the Party that does the heavy lifting and fund raising and advertising and nominating.
I am talking about the American voters. Lots of whom do not identify as gop or Dem. And no matter the party if they do not win the independent vote they are in deep deep trouble.
If Biden does win, assuming it is Biden, it will be independent support that will put him over the top.

If Trump were to croak then I think some of the MAGAts would eventually flock to RFK, Jr. They are very enamored of that loon. Bannon & Stone are pushing him large, he's anti-vaxx, never met a conspiracy he didn't get on his knees for, & is A NAME.
I don't think any of Donnie's mutant kids have the juice to take over for him, even his plastic fucktoy daughter. Additionally, if Dump dropped over, he is going to leave those turd sons of his holding the bag. Endgame for those two chucklefucks: Eric will do time & Don, Jr will shoot himself out of fear of incarceration. They're DONE, even if neither have accepted it.
I think Bannon sees RFK, Jr as a Win-Win. Win, if he manages to take even 1k votes from Biden in 2024. Win, for a post-Trump landscape when RFJ, Jr goes "independent" or Republican & woos those crazy asses QAnonners & conspiracy theorists voters who are lost without someone telling them what to be terrified of & enraged over.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 25, 2023 12:46 PM |
Interestingly enough, most people who say they are Independent voters are truly not. Surveys show that 75% of them are what they call leaners. They associate mostly with one party but just don't want the label. They love the idea of being called Independent because no one can ever blame them for a candidate they put up for election.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 25, 2023 12:56 PM |
FYI: Right now, Trump is behind the hardliners in the Sedition Caucus who are refusing to deal with the debt ceiling. He is encouraging them to shut down the government. McCarthy could make a deal with the Dems, and call for a vote and with help from the Dems they could ignore the extremists and pass the damned budget. But the extremists told McCarthy they will remove him as Speaker if he does. So Trump is very much involved and he and his rabble in Congress are literally stopping the function of government. Which is the goal.

As much as we all want him to die quickly, slow torture is what he deserves and what he is getting now.
He's in serious decline already. The barrage of court cases against him is wearing him down. There are pictures of him showing up in court this week with his hair mussed up and no make up. For a guy so insanely vain that says something. The only lawyers he can get now are a joke in the legal profession. He can't bluster his way out. And the legal troubles are going to go on and on and on with no magical pardon in sight.
He's running for president now only because he has to. It's a primary defense argument in his court cases plus he needs to beg for money for his lawyers. The hardcore fans travel and show up to his campaign events mainly to interact with each other and feel like they belong to something. Yet his crowd sizes are declining and people leave early because even his fans are bored with his stupid, repetitive speeches. He's bored with it too. His speeches are on teleprompters but he's making a lot of bizarre mistakes, mixing up names, etc. Some may be mental decline but I suspect he's just bored with it and can't be bothered to focus any more. He knows he won't be reelected but he's forced to go through the motions.
Slow torture.

For years, since 1941, the far right, like the John Birch Society in the 1950s, , was seen as a joke as far as national policy or voters.. Although the book 7 Days in May was written out of a concern for a different kind of right wing threat at that time.
Then came Vietnam and the left wing inspired anti war movement. The Silent Majority was born or coined as a response to that. . And the right had been growing and getting stronger ever since.
They may not be smarter but they are tougher and will do what ever it takes to win.. The left will complain a lot..

The way the media is covering Trump scares me. They are legitimizing him, after 4 indictments on 91 charges! And he is clearly losing it when he posts comments or makes speeches. Irrational incoherent, etc. The thing is we need to recognize that the Fascists, the White Christian Nationalists, etc are going to be busy with or without him. They have a strategy. THey are running people for offices at the local level and have taken over the state Republican party organizations. To say well we have to turn out and vote, is simplistic. Of course we do. But with corruption voter suppression, gerrymandering, etc. the deck is stacked and we will require overwhelming turnout. Tuesday, Andy Beshears is running for re-election in Kentucky. Brandon Presley is running to get elected the first Democratic Governor in a very long time in Mississippi. And the state Legislature in Virginia is hold elections. National media focuses on the show biz, and spectacle they hype about national politics. But the fight is going on locally. We need better lawmakers who will make the kind of laws that insure that these people can never hold office in this country, and some of them need to go to jail for fucking treason.

Something like this, I suspect...
"When Saguache County police officers arrived at Lamboy’s house in Crestone, they found Carlson immediately. They could see the twinkling, multi-colored makeshift shrine from down the hallway. The scent of sage hung in the air, according to an officer on the scene. The room was decorated much like a child’s bedroom, with rainbows and hearts and stars. A few stuffed bunny toys perched atop the mantle above Carlson’s body, as if keeping vigil.
She sat atop a bed, wrapped in what appeared to be a sleeping bag, and decorated with Christmas lights. Her body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Her eyes had deteriorated to the point that they appeared to be missing entirely, and the area around the empty sockets had been dusted with glitter makeup. Her lips had receded, causing her teeth to protrude from her mouth. She was shockingly thin, and her skin was blue — though authorities wouldn’t have known that her skin had already begun turning blue over the previous few months. “Wow, they painted her,” one officer is heard remarking on body-cam footage that was later released."

White supremacy is the driving force behind the MAGA movement. In the 1960s the Republicans rejected the John Birch Society from their party because they understood it would lead to division and ultimate ruin. After Obama became president the Tea Party emerged, which was basically a neo-version of the John Birch Society, and not surprisingly was financed by the Koch Brothers, whose father was a principal figure in the John Birch Society. Once Trump came on the scene, the Tea Partiers jumped on the MAGA wagon, because Trump 's ugly rhetoric validated their own hates and fears and prejudices. Today the Republican Party doesn't really exist, it's is a MAGA party dedicated to the cult of Trump. Once Trump is gone, someone just as morally corrupt will rise to replace him.
